A truly unique seaside property with a 1,000 years of history behind it. Once a fortress during the occupation of the Saracens in the 1200's, it was much destroyed and mostly deserted since at the beginning of the last century, the artistic sensibility of the futurist writer, Gilbert Clavel, overwhelmed by the beauty of the site and its surroundings, was inspired to begin a renovation of the property. He also commissioned a specially designed interior with the help of his fellow artisan and friend Enrico Lietz. Gilbert Clavel entertained many famous guest in his house such as Cocteau, Depero and Pablo Picasso, who met his future wife Olga Kaklowa here. The result of Clavel's toil is the Tower, a pentagonal residence on four levels, with a subterranean level built directly into the rock.
Now, this distinctive and special home is available for rental to families and friends who will appreciate its exceptional character and the memorable experiences it will engender. This is not a conventional home, built as it has been on a promontory, and presence of the sea and the commanding coastline of the Amalfi Coast, is an essential part of its character.Privacy is absolute, you can spend hours just looking at the horizon to get lost in the endless sea and listening to the waves crashing on the reef, but you can also choose to walk the beach and the path that takes you into the heart of Positano, in just 15 minutes, The appealing decor and inherently interesting layout, with its many corridors, stairs and terraces, is most suitable for those looking for an authentic Italian holiday without pretense or affectation. From virtually every window comes the sound of the surf and a vista of the rugged coastline. There are spaces sunny in the morning, and those sunny in the afternoon. There are rooms for children to relax, watch a movie, be among themselves, and other spaces more suitable for adults gathering for limoncello or an italian aperitivo. There are three principal terraces plus a private descent on a characteristic narrow staircase, to the sunny beach. This beach can only be reached by others via boat, and when it is occupied by guests of the house, people tend to move on to the next, likely deserted, cove. It is equipped with chairs and beds; there is a bathroom with hot/cold shower at the top of the stairs, for refreshing before or after a swim.
The Tower is surrounded by 3 main outdoor terraces. Ideal for privacy and perfect for outdoor living - is spread over multiple levels, all connected by open-air paths hewn from stone. Surrounded on three sides by water, the villa has incredible light streaming through every window. There are numerous staircases, corridors and walkways linking the various rooms, making this hazardous for anyone unsteady on their feet or likely to be disoriented. Unsuitable for adventuresome children. There are approximately 65 steps at the entrance and 37 steps to the beach. Some low walls of about 1 1/2 meters high. There is an electric chair lift at the entrance.
The interior of the Tower is set in three different parts:
