Calming Home Base
Gibbs Palms was the best location for our circling of the island. My wife and I went to experience as many Barbados beaches this trip as we could. An easy location to get to and at the end of each enjoyable day, at one beach or another, we could come home to relax. The outdoor shower was appreciated, we could get the sand out of the nooks and crannies on our return each day. Gibbs Beach is also a wonderful beach, we spent time there also when resting from our explorations. Not many beaches better than Gibbs. We also got home late and tired many times, instead of cooking we found we could order in from the Speightstown chinese (East Moon), or pizza places (Pizzaman Doc or Zacchios). The house was immaculate on arrival and is bright, cheery and welcoming. We love Barbados and Gibbs Palms is highly recommended by us.
Best Rum Punch
Thanks Rob. The place was wonderful, so set up for beach days and evenings home. We had the best time searching the island for who makes the best old style rum punch. We had so much fun/rum trying see to which of the 4 of us made the best RP every evening at the house. During our day travels the verdict for the best old style RP is the Round House Restaurant on the east coast. The most potent and a good runner up is at One.Eleven, in Speightstown. BTW: go see Arturo Tappin play at One.Eleven on thursday night. He is an amazing jazz saxophone player, such a fun band, and a great evening out. We will make our way back to Gibbs Palms as soon as we can co-ordinate our schedules and funds. Cheers.
Trees and Breeze
One of the best properties we have rented. We heard about it through word of mouth and were able to book directly with the owner through a local friend. We had the whole house and yard with everything we needed, bedding, towels, beach chairs etc etc. The place was spotless for our arrival. We have stayed at more expensive and modern homes in Barbados with less character and no trees for shade or breeze to keep things cool. The house had air conditioning in the bedrooms which wasn't known at the time we booked. We didn't use it much though as the breeze was always cooling in the evening and we enjoy the windows open in the evening for the sounds of the crickets and frogs to sleep by. Having coffee and breakfast on the patio in the mornings was so relaxing. A couple of birds sit on the veranda sill daily waiting for any toast crumbs. Do not leave your breakfast unattended, though as they are in waiting for that. There were monkey families that came through the trees in the yard most mornings. It was like they were passing through and checking us out from above. The one thing we tried, but did poorly at, was the old style BBQ which looks great and appealing but it turns out we are not great at using charcoal briquettes. If we practised we might get better. The beach is a wonderfully typical Caribbean photo op. It was very quiet when we were there. We are older so the sea being so absolutely calm for most of our stay helped for getting in and out without incident when swimming. The house is on one level which made my husband's mobility easy.
Our days were great and the sleeps at night were the best, listening to the wind in the trees.
Our best anniversary so far
We go somewhere every year for our 20 years of marriage and back to Barbados was great. The house was exactly as advertised. Viv was a perfect host and Communication with Rob easy and pleasant. The location was ideal to walk to the beach and the garden secluded you from the neighbours. The house is more from the time period when we were last in Barbados which suited us fine. Everything we needed was there, we were in want of nothing. I would choose the longer neighbourhood walk to the beach over the shorter Gibbs road walk just for a more quiet less traffic route. Highly recommend.
Myself and two other friends recently stayed at Gibbs Palm and our trip was absolutely perfect and ended up being everything we were hoping for and so much more. The home itself is lovely. Big enough that we never felt crowded yet small enough that we always felt close to one another. The grounds are beautiful and we enjoyed many mornings eating our breakfast and many nights drinking wine out on the terrace. The property is gated and private and we always felt safe regardless of the time of day. Gregory comes once a week to tend to the landscaping and entertain you with his singing and the property is definitely a reflection of his hard work. Viv was very kind and always there to help when we needed him. The beach is a short walk down the road and had little to no other beach goers each time we went. Which made it feel like it was your own private paradise. There are a few places withing walking distance to grab a bite to eat, but if you feel like venturing out the bus stops frequently at the end of the street and only costs a dollar or two depending on which bus you choose to take. The only issues we had was there are two sliding doors leading to the sitting area of the home. One of the screens were broken so we were unable to open that door to allow some breeze to pass through the house because of the sand fleas and mosquitos. We were informed that it unfortunately wouldn't be fixed until after we left. Also the 'hump' at the end of the driveway was quite steep so we learned that we needed to warn taxi drivers and friends to pull in the driveway slowly or to park on the road to avoid scrapping the bottom of their cars which happened a lot. But nothing that couldn't be fixed and certainly nothing that would discourage us from returning. We look forward to our next visit to Barbados and would definitely stay here again. Hopefully sooner than later 😊
I am glad you had a great holiday and felt at home at the cottage.
Gregory enjoys working on the garden and the results show.
As to the screen issue. I sincerely apologize and understand. It was a result of a miscommunication with Viv the house manager and myself. Screens are an easy, very quick, inexpensive fix. Richard, who lives nearby, repairs the screens and would have done it same day if I had known the first attempt to correct it did not take. Definitely a gap in communication that has been corrected.
Viv, Gregory and myself look forward to your return.
The week off I needed
A friend who had been before recommended Gibbs Palms to me for a break from work. It was exactly what the Doctor ordered. The house has all you need, with Wifi and a house cell phone, but I went to opt out of the " always connected and accessible world" for my one week. It worked perfectly. My days were the same and blissfully simple; Walk to gorgeous quiet Gibbs beach for swim and exercise, back for breakfast, read, then write. lunch, read, nap, go for late afternoon swim and if low tide a long beach walk to Speightstown, home for dinner in, or up at Chirs's place, then read on the patio, sleep.
The only real social contact I had was with Gregory, the gardener on Wednesday, which was delightful with his infectious happy mood while he works, and with a few visits by Viv the house manager. Viv was friendly, helpful and fun, he made me feel comfortable in a new surrounding.
When ever I can get time for an escape Gibbs Palms is where I will go, but for longer next time.
