Ideally Located

Alstad is the city's 1st district, and represented the entirety of Zürich until 1893 -- fitting, since the name means "old town" in German. This centrally located neighborhood is home to the Swiss National Museum and the Zürich Opera House as well as the Schauspielhaus Zürich, one of the most important theaters in the German-speaking world. Alstad is the perfect place to sample traditional Swiss cuisine at restaurants like Zeughauskeller, where you can dine in a beautifully restored 15th century arsenal. You can also shop for chocolate, jewelry, and designer wares along the Bahnhofstrasse. Alstad is quite walkable, and there are ferries, trams, and S-Bahn trains for when you want to venture further afield.
