This property is advertised as a townhouse. The day I received the check in information I was told it was in a big yellow building with a pizza place and beach shop in the front. It is more like a two-story apartment or condo in the back of commercial property. As we entered, I heard the TV blaring and thought maybe the cleaning crew was still there. It was the landlord, waiting for the AC company. He said, "oh, Laura didn't tell you?
The AC is broken". When I asked when they found out, he said, "this morning". It would have been great to know this earlier, as we could have skipped or postponed the 5 hour drive. It was 84 degrees in the unit. He offered to stay while we dumped our stuff and went to the beach but we did not feel comfortable with that, so we waited. And waited. No one came. In the meantime we started looking around the place. It was old, worn out and dirty. There was food in the sink, the floors covered in crumbs and dirt (so bad that my 20 year old son pulled out the vacuum), bathrooms barely cleaned, you could see the table had been wiped because there was a visible film of something smeared all over it, crumbs on one of the beds, couch was old and stained, silverware in the drawers was dirty, I could go on and on. I contacted the host and was told they were waiting for the AC guy and she would alert the cleaning crew so they could do a better job next time. After a while we are informed that the landlord has cancelled the AC repairman because he flipped the breaker and air was coming out of the vents. The air was cooler than the 84 degree air we were dealing with, but definitely not cold enough to cool down the unit to a comfortable sleeping temperature. The landlord kept arguing with us, saying it was working, but after 3 hours it had gone down one degree. So we called VRBO and were told we could get a hotel for the night and then try this place again in the morning or get a refund. We chose the refund. We drove 5 hours to get to Nags Head and wound up turning around the same day and driving 5 hours home (there were no other available units because it was high season and we had our small dog with us). I did receive a refund but wished we had not booked this unit in the first place.
