With the current closures of Glenwood Canyon between Glenwood Springs and Dotsero we would like to share with you the incredibly gorgeous alternate routes into Glenwood Springs while traveling westbound.
1. Independence Pass. If you're traveling west on I-70 from the front range during the summer and fall months (WINTER CLOSURE) use this route. Independence Pass goes over the Continental Divide via HWY 82. It is one of the most scenic drives you'll ever do topping out at just over 12,000'. Views of numerous 14'ers and lush foliage top to bottom.
2. Cottonwood Pass. If you've already been there and done that using Independence Pass, try Cottonwood if coming from the east especially if you're starting travel from west of the Copper Mtn. exit. Again it is utilized during the late spring, summer and fall months (WINTER CLOSURE) Cottonwood Pass is a great alternative to getting into the Roaring Fork Valley.
Take the Gypsum exit off I-70 type Cottonwood Pass into your GPS and follow along accordingly. This is a lesser known route, but is efficient and beautiful at the same time.
3. The Northern Route. Only use if option 1&2 are unavailable because of winter closures or because either pass has closed due to weather or accidents . While traveling westbound on I-70 Take CO HWY 9 North towards Steamboat Springs, the U.S. HWY 40 West towards Craig and finally CO HWY 13 South towards Rifle where you will then take a left and travel east on I-70 the short remaining distance to Glenwood.
