The magical Fowey Estuary is a walker’s paradise with scenic views and cliff top paths as the estuary leads down to join the sea. Set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the town hangs off the west side of the Fowey Estuary where the large, deep water harbour is a magnet for sailing fans. As you walk the ever-narrowing streets of the old town, where mediaeval and Georgian buildings cast shadows over each other, a vibrant maritime history comes to life. Small, independent shops selling unusual gifts, artwork, clothing and books intertwine with pubs and restaurants.
Once a year, Fowey Regatta is held here, a truly fantastic event and one not to be missed, along with the renowned Christmas Market where traders come from far and wide selling unique gifts and food and drink, Cornish produce at it’s very best!
If you can tear yourself away from this gem of a town, the nearest beach, Readymoney Cove, is a sandy beach with sheltered cliffs, just a mile from the town. Enchanting Polperro lies a few miles east, with its pretty cottages and infamous links to smuggling and wrecking, historically once prevalent in the area. The vibrant town of Looe with its busy harbour is a must visit too, as is the quite wonderful twin harbour town of Mevagissey, a maze of narrow streets play host to an eclectic mix of galleries and restaurants with local seafood speciality, offering culinary delights! Beach 1 mile.
