About this space
Our beautiful 100+ year old bohemian style home is located in Echo Park - a vibrant, artsy and wonderfully walkable part of Los Angeles. Lush, woodsy, bamboo fringed property with fountains, firepit, outdoor bathtub (it's SoCal!), handcrafted children's play fort, fruit trees, chicken coop, honeybee hives and a vegetable garden. Secure gated parking for 2 vehicles. Located 4 blocks from the heart of Echo Park where you'll find the lovely lake, countless restaurants, boutiques, an excellent health food store, markets, P.O. , banks - it really is village living in the heart of the city!
The space

This is our home that we live in as a family of four humans, 1 dog, and two cats. We spend most of the year traveling in our other home (a 1987 Volkswagen Syncro Vanagon, cats and dog come with us) and rent our Echo Park house while we are away. If you stay here in our beautiful home you can expect the following: Evidence of a happy family with young children, a lovely clean space, everything you need to cook amazing meals, multiple comfy high quality beds to choose from, an eclectic style, old house eccentricities mixed with modern amenities, extreme coziness, AND ample space for your personal affects in the closets, bathroom and general living areas. You won't see our toothbrushes in the bathroom!

Walk in the front gate and you're surrounded by towering Arizona cypress trees, bamboo and olives, a tall wispy Palo Verde, a welcoming circular patio with a firepit and lots of seating, begging you to sit and chill with friends. Step onto our old fashioned covered porch and open the front door, welcome to our light filled 107 year old early craftsman home!
Downstairs is spacious with an open concept, rooms blend into each other with arches between. First floor consists of:
STUDY A work space which looks out onto the front yard, hundreds of books, flat screen TV with Netflix, HBOgo etc, high speed wifi, printer. Water Rower rowing machine, an aerobic step and numerous weights. A 7 foot long by 3 foot wide sofa make this a very comfortable sleeping place.
LIVING ROOM has a cozy working wood stove, comfy couches, Thai floor pillows, beautiful play area for young children, yoga swing (optional) wooden toys, dress up, silks, Waldorf style playstand. Great sound system set up for indoor and outdoor listening and hundreds of records to send you back to the 70s.
DINING ROOM features a farm style table, seating for 6 or a cozy 8 (two kids high chairs if you require), a small and well tuned piano, more comfy sofas and lounges and a children's arts and crafts table along the window overlooking the back deck and yard.
KITCHEN Pass through from the dining room to the galley style kitchen where you'll find a beautiful antique and very functional Kenmore stove, brand new dishwasher, huge selection of cast iron pots, an eclectic and unique assortment of cabinetry from every decade of the last century, kitchenaid, Cuisinart, French press, bialletti stovetop espresso pot, single cup pour over, toaster oven, excellent sharp chef style knives, all the kitchen necessities, pantry. In the anteroom next to the kitchen are a side by side full sized refrigerator and freezer, massive amounts of space. Also in the anteroom is one of the Eccentricities, the half bathroom, a toilet behind a pretty curtain! A very convenient way to carry on a conversation while using the lavatory! (Still interested in staying here?!)
BEDROOMS Upstairs are two and a HALF bedrooms, full bath, laundry room with a view of the Hollywood sign, Griffith Observatory, city lights and the glorious San Gabriel mountains. Front bedroom is large with a king sized firm 100% natural latex mattress, comfy armchair, large walk in closet. Room faces the front yard and the street. Second bedroom and attached half bedroom have a queen sized bed in larger room and a single sized bed in the lovely little attached garret room. Small closet.
Down comforters, thick cotton blankets and 100% cotton linens on all beds. Blackout blinds on all windows. White noise machines for anyone who cares to muffle the city noise.
LAUNDRY ROOM is accessed through the smaller bedroom. [A NOTE: we use natural fragrance free detergents and cleaners in the house and do NOT use fabric softeners or dryer sheets]. Stacked washer and dryer, clothes drying line, iron and board, clothes folding table, beautiful view.
BATHROOM has a mix of beautiful antique and modern features, wonderful and inviting rain shower head, tub, great view of the neighborhood and the Hollywood sign and Griffith Observatory.
OTHER FEATURES OF THE HOUSE
We are solar powered and have a large array on our roof.
Whole house is cooled and heated by 3 Fujitsu mini splits, a highly efficient system.
It's an old and beautiful house, we have restored much, changed a lot, updated plenty but all along have sought to retain the beauty of old things. Please be aware that you'll find signs of age that we've INTENTIONALLY kept!
OUTDOORS The front yard has a large area with a homemade rustic river stone firepit, lounge chairs and rockers, surrounded by beautiful tall Arizona cypress (sadly they've suffered a bit in our drought), bamboos, palo verde, tipuana and olive trees. Rock gardens and a burbling fountain complete the little oasis feel. Backyard has a large deck with lounge set, big and very sleep inducing hammock, fountain and flowering vine covered pergola. A HUGE working bathtub is on the deck, nestled in the bamboo...soak in a hot bath or take a shower, outdoors, in the middle of LA! The backyard is spacious, open playspace, covered in certified playground wood chips, stumps to climb on, a boulder area to play around, handcrafted kids fort, shovels, kids wheelbarrow, etc. You don't have to be a kid to enjoy the space, toss a blanket down and you can sunbathe and read a book. A small vegetable garden, fruit trees (lime, apricot, fig, baby avocado and mango). At the back of the property is the secured parking area with an automatic gate, space for 1 car (2 spaces available upon request).
Other things to note
1) A NOTE FOR OUR GUESTS WITH PETS:
We require all pets to be flea treated prior to your visit. If you would like advice on our favorite, effective and least toxic products please feel to ask! After each guest with pets departs we do a thorough search of the carpets, bedding and furniture. If we detect live fleas weâll have to charge you for an extermination.
2) Below our house on the basement level we have a small apartment which we rent both combined space results in 3 bedroom 2.5bathroom total space . The apartment space is private but they do enter the property from the front gate and walk through the front yard to access the apartment. Other than that the spaces are entirely separate and private and not visible to each other. We do ask that all of our guests throughout the house be respectful and keep noise to a minimum during early morning and late night hours.
