No feminine products should be flushed at any time. If it is found that feminine products have been flushed and clog the septic system, you could be charged damages. Machiya Lily is an authentic Kyo-Machiya licensed and inspected by the City of Kyoto, it meets all fire and safety regulations set forth by the City of Kyoto. It is equipped with emergency lighting, smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, emergency flashlights, and a phone-line. - Machiya Lily has been restored to maintain its historic character and to comply with the regulations governing historic buildings in Kyoto. For example, Shioji (window coverings) are made of real Washi (Japanese handmade paper). The Fusuma (sliding partitions) are all period pieces so please open and close the doors and windows carefully. - A Kyo-Machiya is designed to breathe; this allows the Machiya to be comfortable all year round. Kyo-Machiya are made primarily of natural materials and the layout allows for air to flow from the front of the Machiya to the back. This is part of the character of Machiya Lily. If you open the windows at the front, and back of the Machiya there is a natural flow of air. This works to ventilate the Machiya, and keep it cool during the summer. - Machiya Lily has a modern Japanese style bath with a deep bath tub, wash area with wash basin, and dressing area. Even though it is modern, the design and usage is Japanese. Please only soak in the bath tub. No soap products are to be used in the tub. The Japanese etiquette for bathing is to wash thoroughly first, and then relax in the deep bath tub. Please remember this point if you are going to visit a Sento (public bath) or an Onsen (a traditional Japanese Inn). - All Kyo-machiyas have some Tatami flooring. Machiya Lily has traditional tatami flooring in the back room of the first floor. This flooring is made from rice straw to form the core and Igusa straw (soft rush straw) for the covering. The natural material of tatami flooring allows it to stain very easily. Do not place or leave any wet, damp, or moist items on the TATAMI, it will stain. - - Machiya Lily has a Tsuboniwa (small Japanese garden measuring approximately 5 square meters). The elements included are a Mizubachi (Japanese water feature) and a Japanese maple tree. Please enjoy the scenery. The water feature is on an automatic timer and will turn on three times throughoutt the day. DO NOT smoke in the garden. - Please keep the noise to a minimum, sounds travel easily in a Machiya. - Machiya Lily is equipped with high speed fiber-optic internet connection via Wi-Fi, and cable television. - The toilets and air conditioners/heaters operate to latest environmental standards. Please keep the environment in mind when using these appliances. - Many of the light fittings are original and difficult to replace. Please take care. - No Smoking inside or outside of Machiya Lily. - It is a Japanese custom to remove shoes before entering into a home. Machiya Lily is designed so that you can wear your shoes in the front room (living room) but should remove your shoes before stepping up into the rest of the home. Slippers are provided and you may wear these slippers throughout the home. - No pets are allowed in Machiya Lily.

Very comfortable and beautifully restored 2 bedroom traditional Japanese house. The house is well equipped and there are lots of interesting places to explore within a relatively short distance and plenty of local restaurants and convenience stores etc within walking distance. The host was incredibly helpful and welcoming and is very generous with his extensive local knowledge. We really enjoyed our time at Machiya Lily and would definitely stay here again if we visited Kyoto (which was lovely!) again.

Beautiful home and great location

Adult family of 4 stayed comfortably in this home. The home was very clean and the hosts were very helpful. We loved the separate sleeping areas. The highlight is soaking in the extra deep tub while looking at the garden and listen to the fountain. So peaceful. There were coffee shops at each end of the street and shrines, temple and museum within 2 blocks.

Perfect stay in Higashiyama

We had 4 friends stay in the property in late May and had a great stay. The house was super clean and lots of history/character, and was centrally located for a lot of the shrines, restaurants and other sites. We also really appreciated the host going out of his way to show us his favorite spots in the city. Highly recommend!

Terrific location, even better host

Great location around Shichijo, walking distance from most stuff that we care about. There are a lot of good hidden local gems literally within 5 mins radius around the property. Clean and quiet, and Mark had been incredibly communicative and accommodative to everything. The machiya has everything we needed. Would stay again for sure.

Most likely the best host I’ve ever stayed with

The property is everything Mark describes it to be. The space was comfortable, well appointed, clean, and close to the train and convenience stores. But the host himself really shines. Mark was incredibly helpful, and thoughtful, in responding to my queries for recommendations. He undoubtedly improved our experience in Kyoto.

Charming Kyoto Home

Our family had a wonderful stay at Machiya Lily during our visit to Kyoto. The Machiya is very charming and serene. The location is great with food and stores nearby and near transit which is very convenient for venturing out to different areas of Kyoto. Mark was extremely helpful before arriving to Kyoto in helping with planning and he and Tomoko both made our arrival welcoming and stay very comfortable.

Great spot!

Highly recommended! A perfect location for visiting Kyoto—lots of historical sites nearby, a three-minute walk to Kamogawa river, with Pontocho street and an entire entertainment area just on the other side of the river. Our favorite was the Japanese-style tatami room with the view of the garden and natural water fountain. You can also view the garden from the bathtub, which is a fantastic way to start or finish the day. Hope to stay here again in the future!

Perfect home, host and location

I think I looked at every Airbnb and VRBO option before finding Machiya Lily. And, based on Mark's great description and the appearance of the home I knew it would be great for us. We are a family of five (our youngest slept with us) and I liked that it had two levels. The house was clean (felt brand new), location was very convenient (we walked to Gion, Kyoto Station, Kiyomizodera Temple). Subway at the end of street was two stops away from Fushimi Inari Shrine and Kinkakuji was easy to get to using public transportation. Mark left a great binder full of details on how to work all appliances in the house (including a washer/dryer combo unit that actually dried our clothes), a fridge with cold bottled waters and a espresso machine with pods. Not one detail was overlooked when the Machiya was renovated. Even the tub is designed to offer a view of the garden while soaking. Upstairs bed was very comfortable and my kids slept on traditional mats in the downstairs tatami room. We ate a neighborhood okonimiyaji restaurant all three nights because it was convenient, delicious and owned by wonderful woman. I think by the last night we all went just to be with her!! There is a great cafe around the corner, convenience stores everywhere and even a McDonalds. If we ever get the chance to return to Kyoto I will definitely plan our trip around the availability of Machiya Lily. We were all a little sad to shut the door behind us before heading to the airport this morning. Many thanks to Mark for sharing his home with us.

Best Kyoto stay

My family of 4 (myself, husband and 2 teens) absolutely loved our stay at Machiya Lily. Mark is a most kind host and gave such a warm welcome and orientation to the home and neighborhood. Very responsive and generous with his knowledge and love of Kyoto, Mark also was so helpful in offering food and site suggestions and in assisting with a lunch reservation at Tempura Endo - a delicious highlight! Machiya Lily is wonderfully unique, designed with care, comfortable and well-situated. It was easy to get to many sights by foot or nearby trains. My running family also appreciated being so close to the beautiful Kamo River to take both short and long runs, and we were lucky to catch the start of cherry blossom season. Our only regret is not staying longer than 3 nights here. We can't say enough good things about Machiya Lily and Mark. We hope to return someday and 100% would choose this home again!

Great New Year’s Stay

We really loved our four days at Lily Machiya over the holidays in Kyoto. The house is a newly and lovingly renovated traditional wooden Japanese home with a large western bedroom upstairs and a tatami mat bedroom downstairs. There was an ample sized kitchen, a shower/bath and two toilets. It was perfect for our family of four. Host Mark was very responsive, even sending his friend George to meet us when we found ourselves coming in early. Highly recommended.

Excellent home away from home

Great property located in a great residential section of Higashiyama Ward, where lots of attractions are located. The property is perfect for our family of four with lots of modern touches like heated-floor in the bathroom and dining room to make it extra comfortable in the cold winter. The property manager was extremely helpful in helping us book shuttle service from Itami airport in Osaka.

Authentic but updated

We couldn't be happier with our stay at Tomoko and Marks property. The home was extremely authentic yet updated, clean and spacious. It was in an ideal location, walking distance from the station, food mart, river and sightseeing. We highly recommend renting this home for a stay in Kyoto.

I'm an attorney and university professor who has lived and worked in Japan for 16 years. I've always been fascinated by traditional Japanese carpentry, Kyoto Machiya and the Japanese passion for monozukuri (making things by hand). After years of planning I finally got the chance to buy Machiya Lily and restore her. Originally, I thought it would be the perfect place to finally write the great American expat novel. Instead, I've done a lot more reading than I have writing and the books in the library reflect that fact. These days I divide my time between a house in Osaka and a cabin I'm building in the mountains of Hyogo.

Pourquoi avoir choisi cet hébergement ?

I spent over 3 years looking at machiya in Kyoto. I knew the things I had to have and the things that I wanted to have. I had to have a place that was convenient for me and for guests but that was also quiet. I had to have a traditional garden and I wanted a house built in the Meiji period. Sanjusangendo is my favorite temple and I wanted someplace near there but I didn't want to deal with crowded streets. Finally, I wanted a place whose history I could document and which would allow me to preserve and highlight the Japanese joinery techniques that always fascinated me. When I finally found Machiya Lily I made an offer the same day. It looked nothing like it does today but I could tell that the joinery was still there and that she had everything I had to have and most of what I wanted. The restoration took almost two years but we managed to preserve almost all of her original joinery and to complete the rest using traditional techniques. From my own perspective, I couldn't be happier with the results or with the fantastic people I met during the process. If you're interested in more details on this type of restoration, please visit the website.

Quels sont les atouts de cet hébergement ?

For me, the architectural history and joinery will always stand out. We really did focus on every detail in this restoration to preserve the history but to add in the modern comfort that we all need. The doors in the living room were a fantastic find (I don't get credit for them) and the hand painted Kyoto paper on the accent wall is a classic touch with modern influence. The kitchen cabinet is made from a mizuya and I doubt there is another like it in Japan. All of the bamboo blinds in the home are hand made by Mr. and Mrs. Kubota whose family has been making blinds in Kyoto since 1883. Visiting their shop and getting to know their family was a unique Kyoto experience. Sano san spent more time with me than I could have expected to make sure that the tsuboniwa (garden) would create the perfect space and the perfect sound. Several of my sempai contributed art pieces and books for the home and I can't walk through without thinking of each of them. Each of my friends seems to have the one thing about Lily which stands out for them but for me, she's all of a piece.
