The Brewery Vaults is spectacular accommodation which was constructed in 1821 as the brewing hall of a former brewery supplying around 14 pubs in Freshford, of which only one remains today. The Brewery ceased production in the 1890s and tragically fell into disrepair for the next 60 years. It then had a diverse range of uses in the 20th century from a paper store to an air raid shelter for the local school during WWII. In the 1990s Jeremy Fry, of Fry’s Turkish Delight fame, came to the rescue and converted it into a private home. Princess Margaret was a good friend of Jeremy Fry and visited the brewery regularly, bringing with her a highly visible police presence, as well as tending the gardens. During this time The Vaults was used as a wheelchair factory business established by Jeremy Fry and his good friend Lord Snowdon. It has since been transformed into a unique listed property providing spacious holiday accommodation for up to 4 guests. There is a sleeping area at each end of the huge living space and original features, such as the magnificent Bath natural stone ashlar barrel-vaulted ceiling and natural stone walls have been retained, yet it exudes a modern ambience and is beautifully furnished throughout. Its glorious architecture, central village location and added luxury of a 5ft four-poster bed make this property one not to be missed.
The Brewery Vaults are in the ideal location to explore the sophisticated grandeur of the UNESCO World Heritage City of Bath, 6 miles away, and the many attractions of the local area. Freshford village lies in the heart of a conservation area in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is within walking distance of the medieval church and village pub, which hosts events throughout the year. There is a well-stocked shop in the village that has a café and outside deck for al fresco dining. There is also a wood fired pizza oven service every Friday at the village shop car park. Boasting some fascinating Georgian architecture as well as beautiful canal and riverside walks, Freshford makes a perfect base for your holiday in Somerset. The railway station in the village serves Bradford-on-Avon as well as other towns and villages including Bath, with its grand abbey, circus and the Royal Crescent, Roman Baths and Pump Rooms, shops and museums; or why not relax and pamper yourself at the rooftop Thermae Spa? Bath has a myriad of events throughout the year including literary festivals, a thriving rugby club and the ever popular Christmas Market. Longleat Safari Park is well worth a visit and there are many wonderful National Trust properties in the area to explore. Golf and horse riding can also be found locally.
