Rent a private room in the gorgeous Holt House and bask in the ornate mixed designs of John Calvin Stevens, one of America's greatest architects of the late nineteenth century. Conveniently located on Congress Street in the West End, the building is convenient to everything that is Portland. Maine Medical is a stones throw, restaurants, Civic Center, the world famous Old Port, interstate 295, and of course the waterfront are all within walking distance.
Beautiful, well appointed rooms. Clean and comfortable, easy access and secure with individual keys. Parking was a big challenge, but the location was fantastic!
The room at Holt House exceeded our expectations in location and styleâthe old house with its lush interior and dark wood contained many old books and relics from the past. Very cool place to stayâgreat value.
Such a beautifully decorated, clean, quiet room! I'm so glad we found this listing for our stay in Portland. It's close to many great food places and easy to get to and from other fun tourist activities. Thankfully parking was not an issue, either. We'll look out for this place if we find our way back to Portland!
The Holt house was definitely very unique. We were in the room which was the library. The main issue we had was parking & hot water faucet at sink did not work. The inn keeper, Teresa was very kind and helpful.
uncomfortable bed, loud radiator, and horrible glade scent
We had such a bad time here that we had to stay somewhere else for our second night that we had booke here. The bed was so old it felt like the middle had been scooped out. The radiator was banging so loudly it could have been someone banging pots and pans in the next room. The glad plug-in was so intense that it made my spouse itchy whenever we were in the room. There were also holes in the carpet and the decor was distinctly odd.
We decided to give the Holt House a try despite mixed reviews â and unfortunately, it turned out to be a complete nightmare. Upon arrival, there were no keys in the lockbox, leaving us stranded outside. I called the so-called âemergency maintenanceâ line, and they said theyâd try to reach the property manager, offering no immediate help or reassurance. While waiting, we noticed a steady stream of people coming and going, and realized this property appears to be a hybrid of permanent residents and short-term rentals â something that was not made clear in the listing. It felt chaotic and far from what we expected. When someone finally let us in, things only got worse. Our room was still being stripped by the cleaner â despite our arriving three hours after the stated check-in time. The room was filthy, clearly not ready, and left us feeling incredibly uncomfortable. The lack of cleanliness, poor communication, and overall disorganization made us feel we had no choice but to leave and book a hotel instead. This was a terrible start to our trip. I would strongly caution others against booking this property.
I first booked this Vrbo because it looked like it was across the street from the Westin Hotel, where my convention was being held. The listing on the map needs to be corrected closer to the actual location, which is near Walgreens. More than a ten minute walk to the Westin. As I was by myself, I felt safer taking a ride share at night to my Vrbo. The building of the Vrbo is very beautiful and historic. I stayed in room 14, which was as described, but the mattress does need replaced as it sags in the middle.
Loved the old house and charming room. Could use a little more lighting and a mirror for ladies to put on makeup and do hair. Batteries for TV remote need replaced. Parking is the big issue, but Walgreens is right beside and let us park in their lot for free during the day.
Lovely room. Unable to reach the property manager, owner. Tried the website, the app and the 24/7 number. Would have been nice to have two sets of keys for two people.
Very difficult to understand all of the parking restrictions.
When I arrived my room was already occupied. The emergency contact took over an hour to return my call and was rude and unapologetic about my room being occupied.
The high ceilings and woodwork were so impressive! The screw-up about check-in, which took two nervous hours, turned out to be MY FAULT in booking the wrong dates and still the manager was able to find me lodging in a similar venue for the same price for the one night in question. That takes a lot of extra effort and deserves commendation. The on-site manager was very nice and offered to help with whatever we needed. Parking was not as hard as I had feared. Yes, kitchen had limited pots and pans in the drawers, but were available upon request.
Great location, a room with on-suite in a wonderful historic mansion with communal kitchen.
William, then host, was very quick to respond to my questions. The house is walking distance to the port, parks and museums. We stayed in the old study / library room. The room has lovely headlight lamp shades and beautiful woodwork. Overall it suited our needs but could be much better with better maintenance. The bedroom tap leaked. The kitchen didn't have enough pots and pans. There is no access to a washing machine.
No sink in the bathroom, it was across the room in the living room area. The front door was unlocked all three times when we returned. The refrigerator in the common area smelled horrible when i opened the door. We were told we were the only ones on the main floor but three men were walking around at different times in the kitchen area. my girl friend felt extremely unsafe.
We loved staying at the Holt House. It's a truly beautiful building. It's like staying in a hotel from another era. The room was beautifully decorated with victorian decor and we loved it. It was also handy to have access to a full kitchen on the first floor where we washed some of our dishes. Overall, it was a cozy and quiet place to stay.
Beautiful house, old style, but cozy property. We enjoyed our stay even though it had a "haunted mansion feel." Great location with easy access to downtown Portland. We would stay here again.
Excellent stay! The property manager was very responsive and helpful. Lots of tasty restaurants near by and walking distance to so many others. Only one suggestion - curtains or shades at the window. A dark green or burgundy Roman shade would help with privacy and keeping out the dawn while still maintaining the incredible atmosphere. Also, towel hooks in the bathroom to keep people from throwing wet towels on all that gorgeous hardwood!
