Located on a quiet street, we recently completed a $400,000 dollar remodel on this property with the idea that it would be a dream pied-á-terre. The Onsen has everything the discerning traveler may want and more. On some nights you can hear seals in the harbor and the surf breaking down the street. And yet you are only a six minute drive to downtown and a thirty minute walk to the pier.
This a rare opportunity to stay in an architectural modern designed by an award winning architect. Santa Barbara is full of faux Spanish or funky beach cottages with a shabby chic vibe but this is one of the only thoughtfully designed architecturals in the short term rental zone of Santa Barbara. Add in the creature comforts we provide and the all wood Japanese soaking tub and you have a truly exceptional experience! As one of only 300 LEGAL Airbnb’s out of the 1,200 in the city, we do not cut corners and take pride in the work we do!
Open the sliding doors and soak in the Japanese soaking tub while listening to the water feature gurgle like a fresh water spring outside. If you’re tall, look out across the ocean while doing dishes. Feel like a movie? Ask Siri to dim the lights and turn on the t.v. and sit back and let the surround stereo system give you an immersive cinematic experience. Feel like reading? Pick up one of the art or poetry books from the mini library / store I have curated for guests to browse and prop yourself up on the ultra plush bed and let the L.E.D. light cut into a channel in the wood walls to illuminate your pages.
We cringe at the idea of cutting corners. We believe that if you value your guests and anticipate their needs, it’ll it be difficult for them not to love this oasis as much as we do! We have furnished all 740 square feet of this unit with built-in cabinets and collector item quality furniture from Eames, Ligne Roset, Vitsoe, and more. Our first two sets of guests loved the sleeping set up so much that they went so far as to buy the exact same bed and mattress and sheets after their stays. All the sheets are sent out to be dry cleaned and pressed between visits. Linens are washed with an entire bottle of Hydrogen Peroxide – better than bleach! The bath towels are from Onsen. We provide beach towels, make up towels, pots, pans, iron and ironing board, hairdryer, portable air-condiotner, cooking utensils, knives, cutlery, a blender, coffee maker, tea, toaster, convection oven /microwave oven combination unit, induction cooktop, built-in refrigerator, free wi-fi, complimentary wine, sparkling water, locally hand made chocolates, fresh cut flowers and more.
For those of you with allergies, the place is heated by RADIANT HEAT, which mean no air blowing through dirty ducts!
A note on Fees & Extras:
Cleaning Fee: It costs us about $300 per cleaning. We have removed this additional cleaning fee but have not stopped providing a bottle of wine, fresh coffee, paper towels, tooth brushes and much more!
Taxes: As a fully legitimate, registered Airbnb, we pay 14% in taxes to the city of Santa Barbara on each stay. If you do not see this tax, it is because we are paying it out of our pocket!
To get a more accurate understanding of what you are paying, deduct the cleaning fee and the taxes that we are paying!
The Japanese Tub
In Japan, cedar soaking tubs are believed to give you energy. I am a natural born skeptic and I’m not a tub guy. But after several nights of soaking in the tub before bed and getting out with more energy than when I got in, I am believer. When I did my first remodel of a different property in 2008 and after reading Yaunar Kawabata’s Snow Country, I dreamed of getting one of these tubs but was scared away by the price. This time, I bit the bullet and it cost more than my first two cars. Soap destroys the wood. This is why we ask our guests to shower before using the tub and not to use any soap products of any kind but instead use the Hinoki Cedar chips we provide.
