After a long flight, car rental scene and a trip Costco for groceries for two weeks in Kihei, we headed off to the condo we booked 6 months prior. Upon opening the front door we discovered that the condo had not been cleaned. I called the cleaning person on our instruction sheet. He was unaware that we were coming; he told me he would call me back in 5 min. and hung up. We waited, unable to bring up our bags and food from the hot car. After 20 min. and no call I called our host Laurie Neff. She was surprised and apologetic. She told us this has only happened 4 times in the last 14 years. She text the cleaner, he then called back and said he could âbang it outâ in 40 minutes. We told him to please take his time as it was a mess. He sent a text saying that there was too much laundry and we wouldnât get clean bath or beach towels until the next day! At least we can un pack the car and bring in our groceries. Laurie called to check back, I told her it looked good and that we were settling in. Upon further inspection though I discovered that the cleaner had done a very cursory job. The bed was made, fridge cleaned out, floor swept, not mopped, dishwasher run, table tops wiped down. In the bathroom the toilet had been cleaned, tub rinsed, not scrubbed, rust stained. There was an all over grunginess that still existed. The doors and knobs were sticky and stained. The bathroom was the worst. The caulking around the tub was black with wet sticky mold, so were the corners of the bathroom floor and tracks of the shower door. There was hair in the mold. bathroom rug..filthy! This wasnât a one off poor cleaning; this is months of neglect. We were exhausted, it was after 11:00pm and I thought it more prudent to buy a bottle of bleach and do it myself. We were not willing to wait and monitor the cleaner while he re-did his job.
There were many other cleaning disappointments and smells, an open junction box w/exposed wire, no cable in the living room, wrong internet code info, the living room slider screen fell off, broken equipment, sheets so old/worn they wouldnât stay on the bed. I text Laurie re: broken equipment, she asked if there were other issues, I told her everything and sent photos, I asked for a few days credit. I didnât get an answer for 3 days. then I received a long defensive email from her, she said because we got a deal on rent due to some exterior work being done that we should be satisfied. She begrudgingly refunded our cleaning fee.
