Beautiful House, Unfortunate Location
The house is clearly newer, and is beautifully decorated with clean, modern, high quality finishes. The two bedrooms each have their own bathroom. They are both very nice. The kitchen was well-equipped for the most part (although I couldn't find a wine opener!) There were plenty of linens, toilet paper, paper towels. The beds were very comfortable but we found the sheets to be kind of rough/scratchy. You can walk to town in just a couple of minutes (if you can call Government Camp a town! It's quaint but be aware there's not much to it). It should be noted that you cannot see Mt. Hood from the house, in case you were wondering. It should also be noted that upon entry to the house, you need to immediately go up a flight of about 16 stairs. This was not a problem for us, but could be difficult (with heavy suitcases, etc.) or an inconvenience for some. The big issues we had were malfunctioning air conditioning units and proximity of the house to the highway. The house has mini-split AC units instead of central AC, which is fine, when they're actually working. Unfortunately, we had to call maintenance out twice to get them working. We did receive a prompt and helpful response to this problem, thankfully. I think normally in the summer you might not even need AC, but is was unusually hot during our stay. Ceiling fans could help, but there are none in the house. We found only one small table-top fan. Maintenance did bring a box fan in case they couldn't get the AC working again. The other issue we had is with noise from the highway, which is to the IMMEDIATE right of the house. Too much noise from traffic made it impossible to keep the windows open even at night when temps cooled off outside. The noise made sleeping and watching TV difficult. It should also be noted that there is a steep drop-off of several feet to the immediate right of the driveway. This is a huge safety hazard as someone, especially an unpredictable child, could easily fall down into the ditch and get injured. Something needs to be placed there to prevent this from happening. Lastly, the smoke detectors had been disabled/disconnected before we arrived and remained that way for the duration of our stay. No idea why. That obviously needs to be corrected. I realize there is nothing that can be done about how close the house is to the highway; I just think potential guests should be aware of the issue. Would have given 4 stars had we not had the air conditioning issues. The house really is lovely.
