Our family stayed at Mead on the Beach and unfortunately I have nothing but horrible things to say. The house has significant water damage throughout the entire house. The walls are curving in in many places, massive wet spots on the walls and ceiling. My daughter couldn't sleep on the top bunk it was so bad. There is condensation dripping for every single vent. The furniture is so used itâs falling apart. We had to sit on towels it smelled so bad. Not one available plug in master suite. There is mold in one of the bathrooms which poses a significant health issue to everyone, including my daughter with allergies. There were nails sticking up all over the deck. We had issues locking the house and getting back in. Numerous bug sightings in the house. The house had a terrible order (which is why there were air freshness in literally every room attempting to mask the smell.) The mattresses were FILTHY! I would expect MUCH more and honestly I feel completely taken advantage of. I have documented everything and have many photos for your viewing pleasure. We will never stay there again and you could not pay us to.
Overall the house was not very clean, especially the bathrooms. All shower curtains had mold on them, also mold was present on the tubes. The house was unlevel on the main floor, walls were bowing out. The house also shock during high winds. House also lacked cooking essentials , it was very difficult to make a family dinner. The main benefit of the house was the closeness to the beach access. Overall, for the money we spent I was extremely disappointed and would not recommend this house to anyone without major improvements be made.
Cons - Home has quite a bit of water damage to walls and ceilings, the floors are not at all even so you feel like you have a bit of vertigo at first (but we got used to it), quite a few of the power outlets stopped working while we were there, and the mattresses seem a bit old (and some stained), also the upstairs toilet kept running/flushing but luckily a handy husband fixed it, lastly the sliding glass door on the main floor had a broken handle making it hard to get in from the outside. Pros - the air conditioning works great and it has 2 separate units for the upstairs and down, TVs are great and 2 bedrooms had ceiling fans. Location can't be beat, easy walk out access to beach, and close to restaurants and shops.
Good things about the place - Clean, just steps off the beach, minutes to all the things on the island, comfortable beds.
Just a heads up:
- The house is right beside a public beach access, so it may get busy in the summer with all the foot traffic coming by. It was okay for us (we came the end of March) but it started to get a little busy on the weekend.
- The shower heads are very low. Anyone over about 5â6â will basically have to do a backbend to wash their hair. Not a deal breaker but just FYI!
- The house is very unlevel and shakes very noticeably when the wind blows. The first time I experienced it I thought someone was shaking the furniture but it was just the wind. The floors slope downward in some areas and the paneling on the walls bows out. The stairs to the upper level of the house are very short and are carpeted which makes them very hard to maneuver safely, but thankfully there is a hand rail. With these structural problems I wouldnât recommend the house to anyone with mobility difficulties.
- Lastly, this house is owned/managed by Oak Island Accommodations. All payments were made through their online portal and all information about the house came directly from them. I would recommend renting the house through them because we were charged more simply for finding the house on VRBO and booking through VRBO. Save yourself the money by visiting the Oak Island Accommodations website or calling them!
