This apartment cottage is named after King Charles I, who took refuge at Sudeley Castle after his failed siege of Gloucester during the English Civil War.
Entrance to the apartment is via one of two outdoor staircases (at each end of the Old Forge) and the shared decking area, which faces a pretty lawn and the footpath to Sudeley Castle.
The first floor has a bright and light open plan living area, dining area and fully equipped kitchen, with a stunning central window overlooking the main courtyard. A pretty, divided staircase leads up to the double bedroom to the right and the single bedroom and bathroom to the left.
Note: the three Old Forge apartment cottages have restricted headroom in parts of the bedrooms and landing areas due to the original oak beams and A-frame structure.
Ground Floor Living/Dining/Kitchen Area: Stepping into the living room from the decking area, you'll immediately be struck by the original and huge Old Forge window that is the centrepiece of the downstairs floor in Charles I, making this a very bright and welcoming apartment furnished with country cottage fabrics.
At the entrance, you will find an understair cupboard housing a travel cot, stair gate, highchair, iron, ironing board, airer, as well as the Welcome Dog Basket (with stainless steel bowl and blanket).
A comfortable sofa, sink-in armchair with a footstool and wooden antique chair provide plenty of seating for 4 in the living area. In addition, the living area is furnished with an oak coffee table, occasional tables, a Freeview TV and DVD player.
The fully equipped kitchen, overlooking the decking and garden, has a country-cottage feel, with fresh off-white coloured and wooden work surfaces. The kitchen has all the appliances, cookware, crockery and glassware you need for a self-catering holiday, including an oven/hob, fridge/freezer, microwave, dishwasher, toaster, kettle and Nespresso coffee machine and washer/dryer. (See ‘Facilities' above for further details.) A welcome pack of teabags, Nespresso coffee pods, hot chocolate, milk, biscuits, jam/honey mini pots, boiled sweets are provided for your first day at the Cottage.
Extending from the kitchen is a spacious dining area with a round, oak dining table and chairs for 4 that overlooks the main Sudeley Cottages courtyard.
First Floor Bedroom 1: The master bedroom is furnished with an oak frame standard double bed, bedside tables and individual overbed lights with reading and room lighting. This dual aspect bedroom, with windows to the front and back, has a handy dressing area with hanging cupboard - also the perfect place to set up a little one's travel cot.
Bedroom 2: Furnished with an oak frame single bed, bedside table and individual overbed light with reading and room lighting, this is a cosy bedroom with views to the rear over the garden and decking area. A small hanging cupboard (for shirts and jackets), chair and vanity shelf with mirror provide lots of space for guests' clothes and personal items.
Family Bathroom: Adjacent to Bedroom 2 is the family bathroom, with a large walk-in shower (with a fixed over-head rain shower and detachable handheld shower head) toilet, sink with shaver unit and heated towel rail.
Outside Guests of Charles I share a lovely wooden decking area (with the George III and Prince Rupert apartments) that looks out over a communal garden lawn and a footpath that leads to Sudeley Castle. Each apartment has its own private seating area with table and chairs for 4 guests.

Sudely Castle cottages.
The cottage provides a comfortable, clean place to stay in a complex of several cottages set in a scenic location. Castle and grounds are beautiful with great history and have free entry to people staying in the cottages, really worth a visit.

Relaxing place to stay
Beautiful area and fabulous accommodation. Loved the little care package which included milk in the fridge on arrival. It's the small touches that absolutely have the right impact. Would recommend to friends.

Couple Short Stay for Wedding at Sudeley Castle
Ideal place to stay if you’re attending an event at Sudeley Castle. Property was clean and well equipped and would be able to accommodate 3 people and a baby with ease. No problems parking and easy to walk into Winchcombe. This particular property might not suit those with limited mobility due to narrow step access but others on complex may be better.

This is the second time we have stayed at the Cottages, and we love them! The location within the village and on the grounds of the Castle make it a memorable stay.

joyful stay at this lovely charming cottage
we stayed for 2 nights in this charming little place , had a lovely welcome pack on arrival and the place was spotless,
only negatives are , the sign post was a little bit coverd off the main road so did go around the village twice , but a lovely dog walker showed us where to go ,
and for me the bed was very firm , to firm for me , but that’s preference and it would not stop me staying again , we had amazing walks around the castle and it such a good base for seeing different parts of the cotswolds, all in all out stay was lovely

A beautiful cottage and very well equipped kitchen and bathroom . If youre attending a wedding in the castle be warned it’s still a walk if dressed and in heels .
We had noisy neighbours packing up a 6.00am which you can get in hotels
Beautiful location with lovely walks

A Good Base for visiting Winchcombe and Surrounds
The Cottage was very sweet, and generally well-equipped but very cold, and we couldn’t get the heated towel rail to work so we constantly had damp towels. Tea and coffee was provided but .. 6 tea bags for 3 people for 3 nights?? (Luckily there are a couple of supermarkets in the village … ) Washing machine also provided but no soap due to ‘allergy reasons’
Beds were comfortable but sofa in the lounge was not!! Property was quiet (we were off-season) and free entrance to Sudeley Castle was a real bonus.

Beautiful accommodations
The cottage was pristine and well appointed. We appreciated the coffee and tea provided. Only disappointment was that we were not aware that the castle had closed for the season (we missed it by one day!) and that had factored greatly in our choice of that location.

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts with us on your recent stay at Charles I. We’re very glad to hear that you enjoyed the cottage, however we're sorry for the disappointment caused by the castle being closed. On our website, under the points of note section we do mention "A booking made for this property entitles you to free admission to Sudeley Castle and Gardens, as many times as you wish during your stay. This includes general admission, during the open season, but does not include entry to special events". We hope to see you in the Cotswolds again soon.

Good but could be better
Lovely complex of cottages which we have stayed in a few times before and would go back to again. However, we were disappointed by the grounds maintenance, or more accurately, the lack of. This has declined noticeably since our first visits with weeds and other overgrowth evident throughout the complex. This is particularly disappointing due to the links to Sudley Castle and its impressive and well maintained gardens! The wooden outdoor furniture was tired and not very comfortable and a patio umbrella would have been very welcome as we stayed during the recent heatwave. Unsurprisingly, the upstairs of the cottage was very hot - although a fan was provided.

Great location
We had an enjoyable stay as the location is perfect for walking to the castle and village. The accommodation was well stocked with everything you would need for a holiday.
The bedrooms are quite basic and everything feels a little tired. Also a lot of cobwebs so felt like it needed a deep clean.

Great Cottage
These cottages are very well placed for a trip to Winchcombe. We have used them before and find them clean with good facilities and easy parking. We had a small glitch with our TV that was handled very quickly and politely. Would highly recommend.
