What a wonderful stay! Helen was super communicative and helpful, even leaving a pickup truck for our use on the island.
Unlike many VRBO and similar website-brokered (ie Ayer, Bee, and Bee, Inc.) stays, the house reflects Helen's personality wonderfully, with bookshelves everywhere and little personal touches. The bedazzled paper-plate award for "most likely to get her dog ordained" on a shelf in the kitchen, art, books, and knicknacks, handmade touches. This is clearly Helen's home, not some investment property.
The house was great for our two families - four adults and four kids. The double master bedroom setup on the second floor was great for the two sets of parents, and the basement was great domain for the four kids. The kitchen was a treat (well stocked with everything we might need, and well laid out for making our multiple lobster dinners).
Lobsters delivered to the house by Scott were a real highlight - best we'd ever had, cooked in water from the ocean just 500 yards away from where they were caught. Super full and hard shells in August!
LCI itself is beautiful - the island lends its own personality to the experience. Hitty's Cafe and The General Store were great. We had rented a boat from Manset Yacht Services in Southwest Harbor for the week, and it was a real treat to be able to come and go from the island as we pleased - though we didn't leave a couple of the days - the island offers plenty to do. The town had two guest moorings available. It also allowed us to catch our dinner of mackerel and harbor pollock in quantity one night with a couple of rods and sabiki rigs. Had we not had the boat, the ferries would have done fine - but having our own boat let us explore Acadia on our schedule. The LCI residents were friendly and welcoming. One - Paul - stopped to give me a ride to Helen's place when it started to drizzle. We had a nice chat on the way.
Helen was a wonderful host - the house was everything we could have asked for, and the experience is one we'll remember for a long time.
