Secluded

We were there in late October. Leaves were bright, and falling beautifully. We couldn't see any neighbors. Loved that. The house was clean and cozy warm. There were deer in the yard. Had a great time. Playing pool and putting together puzzles and playing cards. Enjoyed Mama Mia's restaurant. Try the Big Timber beer.

Ford's Paradise

Rating Details: The property manager was very helpful. The vacation rental was clean. I was very happy with the location. I was more than satisfied with the condition of the vacation rental. Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: We spent the weekend at Bear Lair. There was continuous snow and plenty of opportunities to enjoy the cold weather. We spent time skiing at Timberline, tubing and ice skating at Canaan, and sledding at Black Water Falls. This home was in the perfect location for it all. This is an older home with easy access and tons of room. Our dog, Ford, had a wonderful time exploring the large yard and looking out the large windows. We enjoyed sitting by the fire watching it snow, but this house had a fantastic heating system. The hot tub was a popular spot after a day of winter sports. The owners are currently working on updating the property. Overall, it was clean but needs a good spring cleaning. This won't be our only trip to Bear's Lair and we sure do appreciate the owners sharing their home with us.

The 2 main bedroom suites & the 3rd & 4th bedrooms have a shared connected bathroom were perfect for the 6 of us. We loved the front & back decks & firepit. The huge laundry room came in handy. No air conditioning was surprising but it wasn’t bad. I couldn’t find a hose to spray off the dirty outdoor chairs. I loved bringing my pup. Awesome location too.

Great Layout, Perfect Location

Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: Couldn't ask for a better location to Timberline. The place had plenty of space, was great with two families and 5 kids. Pool table and hot tub was a hit. The property was a bit "tired", and unfortunately was a bit dirty when we arrived (really the kitchen/dining room - bathrooms and bedrooms were sparkling), but other than that was a great place and we'd likely return.

The furniture needs to be updated. The ottoman is still really gross and putting a blanket on it doesn't make it better. I know these homes are hard to maintain but little things can go a long way. Hope the owners get a handle on the repairs.

Nice location and property

Decent property had a very nice stay,my granddaughter loved it.She made friends with the big bear stuffed animal,she cried when we left because she didn’t want to leave him.My only complaint would be we would’ve liked to know about the canoe you can use no one told us until we asked another visitor who was on the dock by then it was our last night and it started to rain.Also you pay a $65 fee for the hot tub which doesn’t even work got in and rite back out very disappointed.Other than that we had an awesome time thank you so much for sharing your property with us.😊

Family Ski Trip

Well stocked with all the things a good mountain house needs. Hot tub needs replaced and as mentioned in an earlier comment, the beds are a bit firm so if you like a softer feel you'll need to pack accordingly.

The management company was absolutely wonderful! They were friendly, helpful, and attentive. Would definitely recommend renting through Best of Canaan.

Much needed relaxing vacation

Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: We had a great week at Bear's Lair-our 4th stay in this house. It was a very unusually hot week so all the fans in the house were very helpful but could use some new ones. The house could use some updating, but there is plenty of room for everyone to spread out and our dogs love it too. the beds are very firm but comfortable. And the hot tub was great when it cooled off in the evenings. We brought our kayaks and love how close this house is to the lake. We hiked at Blackwater and Canaan state parks as well as the Valley View trail at the top. And we were lucky enough to see the comet!

Bear’s Lair Isn’t Bare

The location was perfect. No close neighbors and no noise. A little disappointed that several of the Eateries listed on the brochure were closed, but we found sufficient places to eat. The house was outdated, but we had everything we needed. Plenty of kitchen paraphernalia to cook most anything. Plenty of towels. The beds were very firm, downright hard. Wood was provided for the fireplace and fire pit. The jacuzzi and pool table were a hit. I would recommend this place for family getaways. I would caution people who have difficulty with stairs as the living room is sunken. Fans were provided, but we got hot a few times as there was no air conditioning.

Great Trip for a Group of a Friends!

Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: Even without AC, this house was overall a great place to be. I love the layout of the house and how comfortable the furniture is. The place DOES smell like dog, especially some of the beds, so make sure to have air freshener and plenty of laundry detergent to try to wash out the smell! Also, the hot tub is small (fits 4 comfortably) so be mindful of that. Many of the outlets do not actually work when you try to plug in devices. Otherwise, this place was a perfect getaway and close to many cool sites like Blackwater Falls! Would definitely visit again. :)

Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: We had a great stay here. Donna at Best of Canaan was extremely helpful. We ran out of LP gas on day one and also had trouble with the coffee pot - I called and we had replacements 28 minutes later! I expected to wait quite some time, but they were "Johnny on the spot!" The home is aging, but very comfortable. Our bed was very nice, the pool table is in good working condition, and the hot tub was very relaxing. Fridge and microwave have been updated. Deer were in the yard daily. This place is soooo secluded. Overall an excellent experience.

We hiked, visited local attractions & the kids caught fish on Dry Fork! They said it was the BEST vacation Ever! The bed on 2nd floor was broken & the slats kept falling out at night. House had lots of cobwebs, dead bugs & smelled pretty bad. Nothing a broom & fabreeze stick ups & spray couldn’t help. We loved the location but the house needs a good cleaning. We would stay again because the lot was great for running children!

Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: We had a wonderful time despite rain every day. The house is spacious and have a unique layout. There was space to be all together and space to be apart. The property has a very private spacious yard. When it wasn't raining we were able to use the yard for some outside games. The house could use some TLC/updating but was still comfortable. There was a great selection of glassware, plates, and bowls. Pots and pans could use some updating. We had an issue with the oven which was addressed right away. There were plenty of towels and extra pillows. One thing I didn't notice when booking was no air conditioning. There were a couple fans but it still got very hot. The rain helped to cool things down. All in all we had a great stay! Thanks for the getaway!

Bear's Lair is the Grrrreatest

Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: We rented bears lair for five nights for our annual Canaan Valley New Year's week trip . We have been renting homes in that area including timberline for the past 10 years. We can honestly say this is the best one we have rented that is dog friendly. We had two families total of eight people and the set up is perfect to allow privacy for everyone but also lots of very nice communal space for playing games sitting in front of the massive stone fireplace or playing pool . The hot tub was perfectly functioning and clean. The yard is beautiful. We had warmer than usual weather for January but the kids had a great time playing in the creek that passes through the property and building forts in the woods. There's amazing hiking and biking trails right out the door including around the two lakes or up into the mountains on timberline roads . We look forward to returning to Bears layer on a more typical snowy week since skiing is literally right through the guard gate less than a mile away. We also love the fact that Bear's Lair is very accessible and does not require going uphill on the mountain roads which can be pretty treacherous in timberline when it's really snowy . Another added bonus of this home is there are two huge Master bedrooms which is great if you have two families since neither of the adults have to compromise.

Great Living Space, house could use some updates immediately!!!

Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: We loved the location and layout of this property. Near the entrance to Timberline yet set back far enough to not even notice the traffic. Large enough for six adults and four kids to feel not on top of each other. The great room with awesome fireplace was just right for hanging out. The secluded pool /TV room was great for the kids and adults, especially at night when trying to keep the noise level down. Hot tub and grill on back deck were great, and we had plenty of firewood. The down sides to this property while frustrating are not reasons not to stay. About $1,500 could really make a difference. All the fixtures are from the 80s including the plumbing ones which were poor at best. All the tub diverters were not working correctly, resulting in half of the hot water not going up to the shower head. The master sink faucet was for a small side bathroom, it was almost impossible to was your hands since it didn't stick out far enough from the basin wall. The electrical switches are also a mess and the place is a bit dim everywhere when needing brighter light. The thermostats need replacing; it was hard to manage the temperature in each room and the house collectively. The kitchen needs some review of its equipment. Having a two slice toaster was frustrating as was lack of rolling pin. Overall we would stay here agin. If I was the owner I would invest a little $$ to make this place 5 STAR all around!!!! Rental management is great and easy to work with, and we took advantage of stay 3 nights get 1 free night.

Yearly Visitor...

Overall, I recommend this vacation rental. Reviewer Comments: We visit Canaan each Fall for the past 20 plus years. We love the golf course, Blackwater Falls, Dolly Sods & the entire area--& just the quiet that is Canaan. So--we have stayed in dozens of units, always in Timberline--we like the easy access to the Valley View trail & Dolly Sods, plus the lakes etc... This unit was Ok---private, even though it is very close to the guard shack and to the intersection of the 2 main roads--but far enough off the roads that this wasn't an issue. It is 1 of the few with a paved driveway--very level, easy to park and a nice yard as well. The woodwork was beautiful, the sunken living area rather unique & the 2 "Master" bedrooms could be very useful for 2 families etc... . The "walk across" was also unusual--cool idea! The fireplace didn't draft well--am very experienced with fire making & got one going easily--but keeping it going was a chore--literally had to get up every 15 minutes to tend to it or it would go out--& it leaked smoke a good bit too. Beautiful hearth though--and the outside firepit was nice too. We unfortunately were blessed with an abundance of mice! Noticed this the 1st day and was given mouse traps by the agent--proceeded to catch 4 in those! It is that time of year and apparently this unit has an exterminator, but we have never had this degree of an issue in any other unit we have been in. The hot tub jets were effectively not working--or working at 50% or less at best. This was very disapointing as that is a key feature for us and you pay an extra hot tub fee. The kitchen was meagerly equipped--most basics, lots of plates but not nearly as fully equipped or well thought as most other units we have been in. Per other comments I have seen--the light switches are not labeled very difficult to figure out. We did enjoy a 2 inch early snow the day we left--just enough to make everything white!
