We’re making our home available to guests who want to experience Greece as it was in the 1970s. The Dodecanese island of Nisyros, a mountainous island set on a semi-active volcano, remains untouched by tourism and is suited to travelers who have the inclination to go off the beaten path.
Cloud House is located in Emporios, a historic mountain village with views into the volcano’s caldera on one side and the Eastern Aegean Sea on the other. The volcano has created a microclimate where the house is cool in the Summer and warm in the Winter.
The ample bathroom is heated by a geothermal shaft and the kitchen was recently re-done to include all modern amenities. Yet both bathroom and kitchen still have their traditional working fireplaces for cooler days.
The upstairs sleeps five, with one double bed, one double pull out sofa, and a single (very comfortable) chaise longue. There are two private balconies and a dedicated workspace with strong and reliable Wi-Fi.
Cloud House is easy to access, 32 steps up from the small village parking, where a natural sauna heated by the volcano leads the way. In the village square two of the finest tavernas in the Dodecanese are only steps away.
Emporios is an archaeological gem full
of ruins that has been undergoing a revival as traditional houses are being restored by contemporary architects, artists and designers. The original Nissyrian charm still permeates the village with wild goats walking the cobbled-stone streets and church bells ringing.
This is the ideal base for a network of rustic hiking trails and paths offering breathtaking views in all directions, leading in and around the volcano, passing natural thermal baths as well as many of the churches of the island of which there are over 100.
Cloud House is an encounter with deep-time, sci-fiesque landscapes and an experience that spans the ages.
