Lovely cottage by stream with caboose and covered bridge over trout stream
There's nothing like relaxing on the porch swing at this quaint 2-bedroom cottage in Sugar Grove, Virginia, (near Wytheville) listening to the stream rush over the rocks. Watch our resident ducks, and then take a dip in the private swimming hole. Kids (and kids at heart) love the caboose in the yard, complete with it's own half bath. There's a big lawn for playing, great hikes nearby, plenty of fly fishing in the area, and the cottage is in walking distance to the beautiful Grayson Highlands Horse trail. Good WiFi, Direct TV (or bring your own Fire Stick), and cell phones will work if you connect them through the WiFi. The kitchen has everything you need, and a washer and dryer are available. Great spot for hunters, or for anyone that just wants to get away for a while. Borders Jefferson National forest.
The cottage itself was okay needs a little upgrading. My biggest complaint was the shower. Very difficult to use!Not much of a creek just a trickle of water.
This was a great place to stay for a few days in the mountains. My son stayed in the creek and enjoying the water. A nice relaxing porch swing that overlooked the creek. We would stay here again (and probably will).
We absolutely loved this charming little cottage. Our 5 and 6 yr old grandboys loved swimming in the creek and running in the big yard. Everybody thought the caboose was just the coolest thing. One of the boys' favorite things was making s'mores by the fire. We are already making plans for our next stay.
We wanted to get away from the city this summer and this was the perfect place to find peace and nature. The house has different areas to sit and relax outside. Goal achieved!
This cabin had all the things! The creek, the covered bridge over the creek and the caboose were fantastic. It was so pleasant to sit by the creek and listen to the water flow over the rocks. Serenity! The house had everything you would need to cook a meal and there were plenty of dishes if you needed them. The bed was very comfortable and we slept soundly. The firewood was a plus (thank you) and we had 2 fires while there. Hungry Mother State Park is about 30 minutes away in Marion and it is a very nice place to hike trails, ride bikes or lounge on the beach. The Hungry Mother Grill has THE best cheeseburgers at a very reasonable price. If you like Italian, you must try Pizza Perfect for their pizza and spaghetti. Delish! This cabin was nice and we are ready to come back! See you soon!
The accommodations were perfect. It was well stocked with everything we needed for the weekend. The beds and furniture were comfortable. Plenty of outdoor seating as well. The caboose and covered bridge were charming and the area was perfect to explore. Would definitely stay here again- we all enjoyed it.
Very nice little bungalow. Very secluded and private. Very well equipped and appointed. Cottage has everything you need. No complaints at all. Everything is as advertised. Nice smooth rental transaction. Nice quiet place to get away from it all.
Location is beautiful... easy drive from 81 on private property that is a 5-minute walk to the Jefferson National Forest (dirt road and lovely trails). The property is beautiful (yard, creek, bridge, porch, caboose...a great little place!)... but TLC is needed. Recent storm Helene knocked down many trees that fell into the creek... covering some of the view and use of the creek (not so much an issue for us since the water was cold but FYI for warmer months). Bathroom in the caboose (advertised working in the VRBO listing) was not working (not a big issue, but still not as expected). On the surface, home was clean with a good amount of bedding. However, there was a strong musty/mold smell throughout that dissipated (but never left) over time with use of gas heater. There was visible mold on the lower part of the desk in main bedroom, throughout the inside bathroom drawers, and on the door of main bedroom. Kitchen had all supplies that were needed and the layout of the house allowed for the family to always be together. Good wifi, if you are working away from home. Overall, the property is warm and inviting and has been well loved. A nice rental for a family.
Problems with electric. Some of which were caused by the prior storm. I had contacted the host to make sure everything was ok and I was told just a few trees down. Actually the electric mast was damaged. And we found this out when we returned from town to find a man on the roof who was there to fix it and he told us that he hoped he could take care of it so we didn't have to leave.Gas fireplace doesn't work.the bathroom in the caboose doesn't work and the place is incredibly musty and moldy. It will give you breathing issues. No ducks, see prior reviews and definitely no where to kayak as the stream is filled with trees. Couldn't use the fire pit because the phone line is only about 5 ft directly over it. Oh and also the electric panel outside had sparks coming out of it. It needs a lot of TLC.
rcrecommend this place. Give it a month of
The family loved the property. The caboose was great for pictures. We donât get to see the ducks but saw lots of little fish.
We were able to cook every night with no issues. We grilled out and used the stove/over.
Would stay again if we are in the area.
Awesome property. Clean with everything you could need. Very secluded (we really needed to get away from everyday life).
The home and grounds are very beautiful. You can tell that the owners really love this property. We would gladly stay here again.
The property itself was magnificent! It was an experience in itself and the locals were also nice! I was amazed to walk in. the manager left notes on how everything worked which was very helpful. it was very well organized.
The property manager went up and beyond.
The sights around the area were breathtaking and i definitely will be returning.
