My daughter and I and our Cavalier King Charles Spaniel pup William had a lovely weekend at Neely's home. The home is charming, comfortable and in a perfect location. The bedrooms were comfortable with cozy beds and new air conditioners. It would suggest for the host to create to a manual about the property for guests, a how-to on items in the home (dishwasher, cable tv, etc.) and info about local must-do's. Other than that, our stay was glorious! It helped that we had perfect weather.
What was supposed to be a charming cottage on Joy Street, turned out to be a joyless stay at a not-so-charming shoebox in dire need of maintenance.Where do I start? False advertising, for one. The cottage did not have air conditioning, as advertised. We found one air conditioner, an old, decommissioned unit in a closet. The pictures on VRBO did not reflect the true state of the property. The refrigerator was old and rusty and just unpleasant to put take-out in. The advertised shaker-style kitchen chairs were replaced with dusty and period-stained chairs, 40 years passed their glory days. The advertised teak furniture was covered with moss and mold, far from being usable. The advertised outdoor area was not so cozy, either. The furniture was broken,a garbage can in leu of a flower vase on a coffee table,a junkyard for rusted beach chairs, umbrellas, strollers,I doubt if Goodwill would accept them. The moment we walked in,the odor of mildew and mold was overpowering and oppressive. We dealt with the odor every evening as we came back to retire from a day in town. The couch, the pillows, and chair cushions were all stinky and in dire need of good steam and shampoo. We were able to open only a couple of windows to air out. Some windows were unusable as they had no screens,or the screens were broken and covered with dust and insects. The window in the bathroom was broken allowing ants to penetrate the house. We discovered a huge ant nest behind the garbage can in the bathroom.
