One of the most comfortable and beautifully finished properties we have had the pleasure to stay in. Emmanuel made us feel very welcome, bottle of wine on the terrace made for a perfect start to our stay in the Dordogne.
Montfort is a lovely quiet location with views of the castle adding to the overall ambience.
Can't recommend this property highly enough. A real home from home.
Great house. I stayed there with my three teenage kids and set up was perfect for us. The house itself exceeded our expectations and was very relaxing. We'll be going back - thoroughly recommend it.
Emmanuel is a super host - enthusiastically meeting us on arrival and making sure we settled in.
The house is in the small village of Montfort - lives up to it's reputation as one of the prettiest small villages in France. Breathtaking setting and lovely for a wander around (the chateau itself is privately owned and note open to the public)
With three restaurants and a small boulangerie / patisserie on your doorstep this is well set up for not having to do any major shopping. That said Sarlat is only 10 minutes away and is great for sightseeing (and there's a supermarket on the way home to stock up).
We had other family staying nearby so we had to make sure we booked for the restaurants - well worth trying the two in the village early in your stay - you'll likely want to go back!!
We used Bise as a base for spending quite a bit of time on the river - Soleil Plage is a 2km away and has a well run canoe/kayak hire - but again book at least a day or two before as there's a big campsite down there so they get booked up. For the adventurous there's a (quite steep) path down to the river from the top of the village - we managed to get a paddle board and a kayak down there to the river. If you do go kayaking I recommend doing at least two days - one day from upstream - a little more 'nature' oriented and should be obligatory for the view you get of the Cingle de Montfort and the Chateau. The other day head downstream to take in the classic castles and cliffs 'package'.
WE LOVED OUR WEEK THERE - and Bise was the perfect base
Stayed for 12 nights in this beautiful property. 4 adults and 1 dog. Stephanie showed us how everything worked when we arrived and provided extra towels for our friends. This is a large property full of character but with all modern amenities. The outside terrace is fully enclosed so ideal for a dog. The village of Montfort has a bakery for morning bread, croissants and delicious pastries. We would highly recommend staying here and will be back.
The location is very nice and the property is charming but misses some basics. We stayed over a month and were told there was no housekeeping eventhough the dailt rate is the same as for very short stays. The lights above the mirrors in the bathrooms are picture lights resulting in many shaving cuts. No closet space and no place to hang towels in the bathroom. The outdoor umbrellas were falling apart and the outdoor seating is not very comfy. The reviews raved about the ownerâs friendliness but our reception was very cold.
This is an outstanding unit and location!!! The pictures on the VRBO website, although they are very good, do not do it justice. This is a centuries old unit that has been updated with all modern amenities without losing any of its charm. It certainly doesn't hurt that you're looking up at a very impressive castle less than a 100 meters away! It is perfectly located along the Dordogne river, and we were able to walk/hike or do a very short drive to many amazing sites. In the short time we were there we hiked, biked, canoed down the river looking up at the castles, visited many beautiful medieval towns, explored caves with 17,000 year old early human paintings, and drank some of the best wine in the world. The farthest we ever drove was 45 minutes from the VRBO! We plan to go back!
It's always such a pleasure to return to this fantastic property and this was our third visit (see my previous reviews for mor detail). The house is even lovelier than in the photos - the decor is beautiful, it is very clean, the rooms are very spacious and every room has real character. The huge terrace is a real highlight. The booking process is always very easy with Emmanuel and the neighbour, Charlotte, who helps him to take care of the property, is a lovely lady - I always enjoy a good chat with her. The house is perfectly situated to enjoy the very best of the Dordogne and is only five minutes away from Sarlat by car. Montfort is more of a hamlet than a village and is very quiet and very picturesque. We shall, I am sure, return.

Lovely property in a perfect location for exploring the Dordogne.
Amazing property much bigger than expected with a lovely large terrace.
Very well equipped and spotlessly clean.
Emmanuel offers great communication throughout and Charlotte the housekeeper met us on arrival and showed us around the property.
We would not hesitate to recommend.
Bise is wonderful accommodation in a beautiful village in a spectacular part of the world. The apartment is perfect - spacious, stylish, extremely well equipped. The location is ideal - toddle to the boulangerie and a few restaurants, and a very short drive to pretty much everything you could possibly want to see and do in this stunning part of the Dordogne. Owner Emmanuel is responsive and easy to deal with, both friendly and professional. We hope to return for another visit soon.
My wife and I stayed at Bise in June 2017. Bise is the best accommodation we have had in our many trips across France. Bise has been been beautifully renovated and nothing has been overlooked to make your stay enjoyable. Emmanuel was easy to communicate with and the location (bar/restaurant & boulangerie all within a minute walk) just added to the wonderful experience of staying in Montfort. David - Australia.
Emmanuel was very quick to respond and communication was very good. Charlotte greeted us as Emmanuel was away. She showed us around the house and even made reservations for us at the village restaurant. The house is beautiful. Well maintained. Modern with lots of character. Very spacious. We loved the terrace and spent most of our time outside. Showers were great.
The location was perfect for day trips. Patisserie Margot is just a short walk from the house - we went there every morning! Also recommend canoeing/kayaking the Dordogne River, the Padirac Cave and les jardins de marqueyssac.
We would definitely recommend staying here! ********
I stayed in Autan for 9 nights in April. When planning my trip, I looked for an apartment that was close to Sarlat but not in Sarlat, and with easy access to my rental car and grocery stores. The location was perfect. The apartment is located in an adorable village with a castle and is just a 10-15 minute drive to Sarlat and grocery stores. It felt like this apartment was right in the middle of everything (I visited Rocamadour/Gouffre de Padirac, St-Cirq-Lapopie/Grotte de Peche Merle, Sarlat, Domme and a few of the castles/gardens, Lascaux/gardens of Eyrignac, Grotte de Font de Gaumme/Saint-Amand-de-Coly).
As for the apartment, it is very nicely renovated with a full kitchen. The bed was a little soft for me (but I could happily sleep on a rock). I used the kitchen every night, and it had almost everything I needed. My only small criticism is that there were no pot holders in the kitchen â maybe there were some and I didnât see them.
Lastly, Emmanuel was great and was always easy to get in touch with.
If I ever make it back to this area, I would definitely stay here again!
We have just spent 7 days staying in Bise. It was great for a couple but would also suit a family or 2 couples travelling together. The house was very clean and comfortable with parking at your door. The view of the castle is amazing and the deck is a great sunny spot to relax. Montfort is a lovely small village and was the perfect base for exploring the Dordogne. From the house you can walk to the boulangerie and several restaurants. There is a great supermarket in Sarlat just 10 minutes drive away. I would definitely stay here again and highly recommend both the house and the location. Emmanuel was a very welcoming host who speaks english and has lots of good recommendations for restaurants and sightseeing in the area.
Well, what is there to say, absolutely beautiful, home and surroundings, idyllic in every sense. Would not hesitate to recommend. My Husband and i have spent 10 days in Bise house, feeling very relaxed and chilled. Emmanuel is most welcoming and friendly, speaks good English. As other reviewers have commented, the house has been restored beautifully , a real sun trap on the terrace and the view of the castle . Good local wine bar, Alains, lots of picturesque villages to visit by car which are very close to each other, and nice walks within the vicinity of the house. Hope to be returning next year, many thanks for sharing it with us.
We stayed in Bise in September 2016, and although the house sleeps 4 adults (along with the recent addition of a child's bedroom) there were only the 2 of us. Thee house was plenty spacious enough for us, but may have felt like more of a squeeze if fully occupied.
The house was exactly like the photographs, and Emanuel is right in saying that everything that you need is there. It's clean and well maintained, as it was only developed in 2013 and successfully manages to combine traditional charm with modern features.
All pre-visit communication with Emanuel was responded to promptly, and he was there to meet us as soon as I called him while we were en route. We saw him a couple of times during the week in the village so we always felt that he was on hand for any quick questions that we had.
The village of Montfort is beautifully quiet and this meant that we were able to relax on the terrace in the sunshine each afternoon when we weren't out exploring some of the nearby villages. Montfort is a perfect location to use as a base, and although it attracts visitors it's nowhere near as busy as others. Each day we walked down to the boulangerie/pattiserie for croissants, and on our last evening we ate at Angelus de Montfort, which is quite literally a minute's walk away.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to others looking for somewhere quiet and peaceful to stay in the Dordogne.
My only suggestions for Emanuel to make this home truly stunning is to upgrade the linen, to include white fluffy towels, and crisp white bedding and a duvet.
We have just completed our second two week stay in this property (and have booked again for next year). The location is delightful and the house is very well equipped in terms of bathrooms and kitchens and all are fitted out to a high standard. The outdoor terrace is where we spent most of our "at home" time dining there from breakfast through dinner on many days. Charlotte and the other local neighbours are delightful.
Montfort is well located for visiting the various sites of the Dordogne e.g. Domme, Jardins d'Eyrignac etc. The local supermarkets are only 15 mins away in Sarlat and the village of Montfort has a number of restaurants and now has its own Boulangerie. There are lots of walking, biking and canoeing opportunities in the immediate vicinity.
For dinner, we would recommend Villa Romaine in Carsac (10/15 mins) and, for a real treat, lunch on the terrace at Chateau de la Treyne (50 mins).
Refurbished to the highest of standards, very well equipped and maintained
We stayed in this house for two weeks which is situated in the little village of Montfort which stands at the base of a beautiful chateau. The House itself is spacious and very comfortable and has been sympathetically brought to the 21 century while preserving many of the very old features. The village itself has been reclaimed and each cottage has been beautifully updated with similar taste, but maintaining a medieval atmosphere.
We thoroughly enjoyed our time, we found the local restaurants to be excellent and the villagers friendly and helpful. There are plenty of local activities to enjoy, including Kayaking along the beautiful Dordogne river, Cycling ( there is a safe and scenic Greenway route), not to mention visits to the very many beautiful chateaux and ancient villages in the area.
We would highly recommend this as a peaceful and relaxing holiday destination and we were most grateful to Emmanuel, for his help and attention.
Nikki Darling and John Duffy
The property was excellent, everything we would have wanted for an excellent holiday in the Dodogne, the attention to detail within the property was amazing, we would love to stay there again and wished that we had booked for longer this time. Well done, the owners of the property Emmanuel and Stephanie were very helpful and friendly.
A perfect place to spend time exploring the Dordogne Valley
Thank you, Emmanuel, for making our stay so enjoyable. We have loved every moment of our two weeks in Montfort and the apartment "Bise" (the North Wind) is such a delight.
Bise is everything you could wish for - spacious, wonderfully decorated rooms, the fantastic kitchen, not to mention the magnificent deck where we enjoyed many alfresco meals gazing at the surrounding countryside and the splendid castle. We also enjoyed our evening walks and the daily stroll to Margot's for our baguettes.
We really appreciated the oasis of calm here in Montfort and have had a much needed, relaxing holiday. Our wonderful memories will have to suffice until we can return some time.
