We had a lovely week at the villa, the weather was great and the villa had everything we needed! Declan the host has been great and the neighbours of the villa were very welcoming. We were sad to leave, hopefully back again soon!
This villa is a true gem. Wonderfully spacious, clean, and comfortable. The pool is big set in a patio that catches the sun from dawn to dusk. The owners are extremely helpful, and the lovely lady (Sue) that pops in is very thoughtful. Even the pool chap is jolly! The little town is quiet, but down at the marina there are some lovely bars especially Le Hangar du Port! Miss it at your peril! We had a fabulous holiday, thanks Declan & Liz for sharing your gorgeous home.
A very lovely house, well equipped with stunning pool and garden. The property has everything needed and more and is beautifully maintained. Well situated within walking distance of the town and port with cafes, restaurants, boulangerie, butcher and small well stocked shop. One of the best properties in France we have ever stayed in. Would highly recommend.
We stayed for 3 weeks and enjoyed every minute. Declan was very easy to speak with and the property manager was very helpful in offering advice on what to do and where to visit. The house is beautiful and well maintained. The pool is just perfect and private. We would definitely recommend this house for a quiet get away with family or friends.
Nice spacious house, well cleaned. Very spacious garden with the beautiful swimming pool as icing on the cake. Really enjoyed this week with our three families.
This was a lovely property with everything you need for a family holiday. Pool and grounds lovely. Communication with the owner Declan was 100%. Kim was great also during our stay for any questions about local area and things to do, very helpful as this was our first holiday in France. Would recommend visiting the local beaches and towns. Would also reccommend making table reservations at least a day in advance when eating out as we found this pretty difficult at times.
The port of was a nice walk away with a good little co op not too far from the villa.
A wonderful house in a very quiet location but within easy walking distance of the village. The pool was warm even in early June and the gardens are beautifully designed with a wonderful games area. The house is very well equipped including a huge collection of both indoor and outdoor games. We look forward to returning with our children and grand children! many thanks Declan and Liz.
Beautiful home, perfect for families. Lovely pool.
This was our first visit to the Gironde area and we had a wonderful holiday.
The house is very well maintained and clean. We were lucky to have hot and sunny weather, and enjoyed the pool every day.
The location is convenient for trips out and lovely beaches. The village provided all the essentials within easy walking distance. We spent a couple of nice evenings at the port towards the end of the week, enjoying a drink at the bar and live music.
Thanks to the owner for great communication in advance of our stay. A lovely relaxing family holiday!
Lovely house, super pool, plenty of room, excellent location
My husband and I, along with our daughter and family have just returned from a week's stay at this house. From the beginning of the booking we have had immediate contact with Declan for information regarding the property. When we arrived we found the house located in the upper part of the village that has local butcher, bakers, pizzeria, Co-op supermarket, and even an estate agent if anyone enjoys it so much they want to move there (!) all within walking distance. The port area in the lower village had a couple of restaurants and good walks along the estuary.
The house itself built by Declan (my husband was in the construction industry so was very impressed) and I suspect furnished by Liz in a super modern style but with French influence. It is very roomy, ideal for us as the oldies were in the massive room with en-suite downstairs and the parents with children upstairs. The open plan kitchen, dining and seating area was great as we could all be talking regardless of the task we were doing. With four children it was ideal having a washing machine and line available. There was an instruction book about the house and plenty of information on things to do in the area. Best of all was the pool, used every single day by all of us. Some holiday lets squeeze in a pool but the size of the plot of land allowed Declan to build a larger pool than with usual cover. The weather for the last week in August before the children went back to school was ideal although we did have a massive thunderstorm one evening and Declan emailed to inform us it was due, luckily we were in the house all day so were able to secure the shutters, outside furniture, although the inflatables did manage to fly all over the garden and the apple tree lost a few apples. Unfortunately one branch of the fig tree did not survive - We let Kimberly (the changeover assistant) know and she immediately came to inspect the damage. Also Declan arranged for a re-clean of the pool midweek as debris had sunk to the bottom and then we had the lights on in the pool so it looked very inviting that evening.
Overall excellent house, super location for beaches and visits - we went to Talmont (artisan village with super shops and restaurants), Royan, St Palais sur Mer, Meschers - all interesting places.
Big thanks for all your communications, we all loved our holiday at 'Loin De La Foule' - and we did get away from the crowd.
Great house and pool but we were unlucky with the weather. Port area was very quiet except on Sunday. Talmont and Royan well worth visiting. Amazing church in Royan. Good communication with Declan. Quick response to any questions.
My family and I have just returned from a wonderful holiday at this beautiful property. We loved our time there. The house, beds, bed linen were spotless.
The pool was beautiful and perfectly situated next the the kitchen, allowing us to watch the children as they played in the pool from inside or outside. Communication with Declan in advance was prompt and straightforward and at the property his local agent (Thanks Kimberly) called in to make sure that everything was going well and suggest some areas to explore with the kids.
Mortagne sur Gironde is perfectly positioned with lots to do within 30 mins drive but the pool and garden made us enjoy many lazy hot days just by the pool as the children loved it. The garden is safe, secure and our children set themselves a routine of pool all day followed by football or cricket in the evening.
The town centre is less than a 10 minute walk away and so whilst the house is rural it is very close to a couple of bakeries, a butchers and small co-op. Our eldest children (10 & 9) enjoyed the freedom to go to the boulangerie in the morning to get pain & croissants.
The port was a lovely place to go for an evening bike ride with the children for a holiday ice cream while mum and dad enjoyed an espresso or a glass of local wine.
We had a wonderful time and the children enjoyed it so much that we have booked to go back again next year.
We were delighted to revisit the Gironde area after many years and had a wonderful holiday.
The property was beautifully maintained, both inside and out, with a lovely garden area and excellent pool.
The facilities inside provided everything we needed and was to a high standard.
We had good contact with the owner who answered any queries we had immediately and concisely.
The property is set in an ideal position in which to visit the surrounding areas and there was plenty for us to see.
We would definitely recommend this property and would like to return again in the future.
The house was gorgeous and so tastefully presented, but what makes it so special is that you feel like you're in a 'home' just without any clutter! It had absolutely everything we needed.
The outdoor dining area is beautiful and you could happily spend long lunches and whole evenings out there. There is a gorgeous view of the church over the fields. We also enjoyed playing boule and sitting in the front garden while the girls took turns on the swing, hung from a tree.
Having our 3 little girls, aged 1, 2 and 4, we were worried about safety with the pool, but it's location right behind the kitchen meant you had a full view of it so we really didn't need to worry.
They loved playing in the house and spending time in the pool, but there are also some great places to visit. Little towns, lovely beaches and pretty harbours.
The closest harbour is just down the hill and has some great little restaurants and a 'cabin' set In the middle of a grassy area, which serves drinks, snacks and oysters. It was perfect sitting there with a glass of rose while the kiddies played!
I would absolutely recommend this home to anyone planning a visit with or without children. We don't ever tend to visit anywhere twice, but this may be an exception!
We had a wonderful holiday at the House. The description was accurate. Booking with Declan was easy and he provided good instructions to get to the property. The House was well maintained and well equipped. The pool and gardens were great for children to play and adults. The local manager came on arrival and gave all the help we needed and checked during the week that all was well. We enjoyed our morning walks to the boulangerie and butchers who were very friendly and pleased to see us. We used two restaurants at the Port which were fine. An excellent week for all of us.

Qui vous reçoit ?
Vous ĂȘtes reçu par Declan Jones
Declan and Liz Jones are a couple from Dublin in Ireland who built their dream home in the Charente Maritime 7 years ago. They love the tranquility of the location coupled with its convenience for shops and restaurants. They wanted to build a house in the traditional Charentaise style while giving it all the modern comforts you would expect. Some of the main things they love about the area are: the sunshine, the beaches, the food and wine and the people.
Having holidayed in the Charente Declan and Liz Jones fell in love with the relaxing, sun drenched area along the Gironde estuary and searched for years to find a second home there. Eventually - through friends - they heard about the beautiful port village of Mortagne Sur Gironde and one visit was all they needed to realise they had found their 'dream village'. It took another couple of years to build their home but they are delighted with the results and hope that you will also enjoy your time chilling out in the relaxing environment of 'Loin De La Foule'. The house is within a couple of minutes walk of the bakeries, bars, butchers and supermarket of the 'Upper Village' and a short stroll will bring you down the hill to the picturesque port with it's bars and restaurants.
The house is perfectly positioned above the village which means that from the upper bedrooms there are clear views of the majestic Gironde Estuary. The location also provides a gentle cooling breeze which is most welcome in the summer months as visitors laze around the pool! The garden is large and enclosed beside a small road with very little activity all combining to give that sense of privacy and serenity. All your shopping needs are to be found within a few minutes walk and there are plenty of friendly bars and restaurants close at hand.
