A GEM in the Historic Fan

On historic Hanover Avenue and only a few blocks from The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts; The Science Museum; highly-rated restaurants plus small neighborhood markets and miles of trails for biking and hiking and the river for kayaking and its beautiful scenery... think Europe. Discover the convenience of living in a 3 bedroom historic home that is in the middle of everything Richmond. This is the perfect setting situated in Richmond's Fan District filled with stately homes of grandeur.
Whether on business or pleasure, visiting the Virginia Museum of Modern Art, or strolling to a neighborhood restaurant, this is the place to call home. The professionally decorated home is tastefully graced with an array of southern charm. The newly renovated kitchen, with its gas Thermidor range, will be a pleasure for any foodie in your group: imported Italian tile back splash with accompanying serving table; fully equipped culinary utensils and supplies; four Parson chairs and glass, black wrought-iron table as an eating area. And step into the sun room --- small and intimate --- with its Palladium windows and floral love seat as the outdoors and sun come right in: this is where you're going to rest after a day on the town. Or, if the weather is nice, relax in the wrought-iron chairs with comfortable seating on the private side deck surrounded by brick walls --- the feel of the Mediterranean. In the front parlor of the house is the formal living room with pocket doors leading to the dining room providing seating for ten or more around the banquet table. Brass chandeliers provide the ceiling lighting throughout the house. Upstairs, the master bedroom and its adjoining bath is in the front of the house. You will enjoy the light coming in through the bay window as well as the newly renovated master bath with Carrera tile and Austrian chandelier. There is also a guest bedroom with a double bed as well as a single bed in the third bedroom. A hall bath with double sink serves both of these two rooms. As with the master bath, there is Carrera marble in the guest bath. The Fan is a unique place to live. To name a few of the attractions: The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (one of the top ten art museums in the USA with a fine-dining restaurant and a casual cafe --- a MUST ad only 8 walkable blocks away); Maymont (park/small zoo/nature museum/historic home to tour; bike and hiking trails); The Museum of the Confederacy; Hollywood Cemetery (famous U.S. presidents' burial ground); Carytown ( a quaint area for shopping and lovely assortment of restaurants/ice cream/ coffee shops you'll love). A few miles away is the now-made-famous- Libby Hill in another area of Richmond called Churchhill where the UCI cyclists completed a grueling course of cobblestones for the Worlds 2015. St. John's Church is located there .... where Patrick Henry gave his "give me liberty" speech. In the summer they do awesome reenactments. Restaurants galore: Joe's Inn (only a few blocks away - Italian, inexpensive and the local watering hole; be prepared for a HUGE serving; they also have a to-go service; I suggest the Greek Salad with homemade feta); Cuba Cuba (obviously, Cuban cuisine about 6 blocks away and good coffee); several walkable restaurants on Broad Street. Hop in the car and go to Stella's about a mile away (Greek cuisine but you will need a reservation, often several months in advance if you're going on a weekend); downtown there is Julep's and Comfort; in Church Hill there is The Roosevelt as well as Dutch and Company plus more; in Oregon Hill there is L'opossum (French and somewhat expensive but my favorite) and Mamma Zu which is crazy busy. On the counter in my kitchen is a folder with additional recommendations. Public bus transportation is available going in the west direction (uptown) at the corner of Hanover and Meadow (three houses away) while bus transportation going downtown is one block over on Grove Avenue. Easy access --- actually within walking distance --- to VCU and an easy drive to the campus of University of Richmond. Our home is clutter-free as the children are grown and live elsewhere. You will feel as if you are in a high-end hotel all clothes and personal belongings removed from the bedroom closets and drawers. With the additional amenities of a professional kitchen, elegance throughout the house; and the best neighborhood in Richmond, this will be love at first sight. Discover the beauty of living in a 3 bedroom historic home in the City of Richmond. This is the perfect setting situated in Richmond's Fan District filled with stately homes of grandeur. Whether visiting the Virginia Museum of Modern Art, or strolling to a neighborhood restaurant, or visiting other cities nearby .... this is the place to call home. All personal items will be removed so it will be like living in a high-end hotel with the additional amenities of a professional kitchen; elegance throughout the house, and a neighborhood considered the best in the city. Ideal for a small wedding reception, too! The Fan is a unique place to live. Craft beer lovers will enjoy the large number of craft breweries in the area. Restaurants galore: Joe's Inn (only a few blocks away - Italian, inexpensive and the local watering hole; be prepared for a HUGE serving; they also have a to-go service); Strawberry Street Cafe (known for its salad bar in a bathtub); Cuba Cuba (obviously, Cuban cuisine about 6 blocks away); several walkable restaurants on Broad Street. A jewel box of art, history, and hospitality

  • 5 de 5

We just spent 2 weeks at Julie's lovely Richmond home over Christmas. This house is (as described) located in the heart of The Fan residential district of Richmond. The neighborhood is steeped in historic and architectural beauty. Aside from it's convenient driving location to all activities in the city, just walking the neighborhood is a highlight of staying there as there are restaurants, museums, churches, and parks all within a few minutes walk from the house. Julie is a warm and gracious host and offered to stock the kitchen with anything we needed before our arrival. The kitchen was well-equipped and a great neighborhood grocery is just 2 blocks away. The beds had very comfortable mattresses and linens. The bathrooms were spacious and well-supplied with plenty of towels, wash cloths, soap, and other supplies. Julie has curated a beautiful and impressive collection of art and antiques throughout her home...many are heirlooms from her family. All of these treasures fit perfectly into this 1904 town home. The remodeled and updated bathrooms, kitchen, and sunroom are sympathetically coordinated with the historic features to bring 21st century comfort and convenience. While there is no designated off-street parking for this house (or most in the neighborhood), we had no trouble at all parking 2 cars in front of the house during our entire stay. While not a place for children or anyone unable to manage stairs, this is a charming home for a Richmond visit. We plan to return this Spring for another 2 week stay and look forward to enjoying the garden, front and side porches.

Réponse du propriétaire: Due to its historic nature, I am very selective as to whom stays in my home. Consequently, I always request additional information about the potential guests. Upon reading Leslie's bio, I knew immediately she and her family would be a "best fit" for my home. This was reinforced through communication via email prior to their stay, culminating when I actually met this awesome woman and her husband. Leslie, thank you for a lovely review of my "jewel box" home which I find such a charming way of describing it. She and her husband took such good care of everything in my home and, when I walked in upon their departure, would never have known there were visitors there for the past two weeks! If Leslie lived here in Richmond, I would want her to be a friend. Thanks, Leslie, for your warmth and kindness. I look forward to your return trip!

A nice stay

The location of this home was perfect for where we needed to be. Parking was challenging but not impossible. The owner was easy to work with. In cooler weather the outdoor space would be a great place to hang out.

Delightful house & location

  • 5 de 5

This was a perfect house and location for our ladies week in Richmond. The house is lovely and well taken care of. Julie was very helpful and very welcoming and made our stay so comfortable. The fan district is central to so many things and we especially enjoyed being able to walk to a number of restaurants and the art museum and historical society. On a return visit to Richmond we would definitely stay here again. Fanny W

Love this place. Gorgeous old building, perfectly kept and wonderful hospitality

  • 5 de 5

My family and i stayed here and totally felt like home. The house has.3 gorgeous bedrooms that were roomy and had all the old charm with fireplaces and tall ceilings and beautiful windows. The linens were cozy and the colors light and airy. The dining room had a nice big table to seat 12 of my favorite aunts, uncles, cousins etc. It was the perfect Christmas holiday house with a nice glow about it. The neighborhood fantastic and the art museum a quick walk away. And what a fantastic art museum!! Julie is the most wonderful host. We will be badk many times!!

Hanover house

  • 4 de 5

Great location, lovely home, and very accommodating host - I gave it four stars because the living spaces are small but that is quite typical of the area and it is an historic home that has been well-tended.

Réponse du propriétaire: Having just placed my home on VRBO in the summer of 2015, the September guests who wrote the above review were my first. I would like to add that they were here for the UCI Road World Cycling Event --- with all members of the family Olympic gold-medal winners and the son (6'6") winning the Team Time Trial. What an honor! I wish they had not given me 4 stars as my house is actually a 10! Check for yourself ---- the measurements below show the rooms are quite adequate in size. The 2000 block of Hanover is considered to be one of the elite avenues in the historic area. Our block has houses that range from 2,000 sq. ft (the size of my house) to 4,000 sq. ft. The measurements of my first floor rooms are as follows: front parlor (living room): 14' x 15'; back parlor (formal dining room): 14' x 15'; kitchen: 21' x 15'; sunroom: 10' x 15'. The hallways upstairs and downstairs are narrow as are the 1st floor 1/2 bath and washer/dryer closet tucked under the staircase (Victorian houses have few storage spaces.) The pantry in the kitchen is small but well stocked. The houses are close to one another and run deep on the property --- all making for the charm of living in The Fan! I prefer to be very selective and limit my guests to adults as the house is immaculate and well tended. Will be on The Fan Woman's Club Kitchen and Garden Tour in the spring of 2016.
