Another great stay at Rick's Place
This was our 3rd stay at Rick's Place. So we are a bit biased. There's not a whole lot I can say about the place that hasn't been said before. If you're interested in a relaxing, quiet place to rejuvenate without much choice in night life and close-by touristy things to do, this is your place. It was wonderful as usual. The house was very clean as usual (thanks, Susie!). Dan and Melanie take such great care of the house. Loved the little changes to the place they had done since the last time we stayed in 2016. The additional solar heating in the pool made all the difference in the world. The water temperature was very comfortable. The light features installed in the lava rock surrounding the pool was stunning. I loved watching the play of colors on the yard sculptures and lava rock from the deck at night. The addition of the dishwasher to the kitchen is much appreciated. That dishwasher has to be the quietest dishwasher I've ever been around. The weather was exceptionally nice during our stay this time. We enjoyed beautiful blue skies and calm ocean waters, something I hadn't seen before from the house in January when we always stay. And the whale watching was good. We had quite a few whale sightings while there. Lastly, the new television provider Dan and Melanie have switched to and the ability to access Smart TV apps was nice. There's a much larger selection of TV entertainment and I was able to catch up on a couple of Netflix series episodes I haven't had the time to do at home. All in all we had another wonderful time. Thanks for sharing your lovely home. We look forward to the fourth time we can come and stay!
The warmer pool is major! The lights at the pool are pretty funky, but they make us smile (like everything at Rick’s Place!). Now we have bamboo fencing to add to privacy. Dishwasher required a kitchen remodel, but so worth it!
What a view!
It’s just like the picture and more. The pool is just right for soaking and the lanai is wonderful. Such a special place for a couple to just chill. The kitchen is well equipped, they supplied lots of the small things, like paper plates, napkins, paper towels, plenty of toilet paper, shampoo, insect replant, sunscreen. Lots of spices, mayo, mustard. That type of stuff. You need to furnish your own drinking water. Great bed, lots of house fans as there is no ac. Mel and Dan were fabulous, very helpful and friendly. Downside is location to activities. It takes 1 to 2 1/2 hours to get to activities around the island. Didn’t bother us much because we enjoy road trips.
Glad you enjoyed your time at Ricks. We try to make sure our guests know it’s not near resorts and stuff!yiu could have drank the water. We installed a huge water purification plant so water from special nozzle at kitchen sink is safe and delicious.
Too much VOG to enjoy the view!
Even with the current volcano activity my husband and I rented this house for our anniversary based on all the great reviews that were previously written and the pics provided. Unfortunately we didn't get to enjoy the full view everyday because most days there was a thick VOG cover. A couple of mornings it was clear enough to see a little of it but the VOG took over again by late morning. Even though the house is around 60 miles from the volcano we believe there is typically more here because of the more southern location. The house was nice and equipt with everything needed. We mostly BBQ'D and ate at the house. We ventured out a couple of days to do some site seeing. We we're excited that it's not a resort or close to the busy areas. It was peaceful only part of the time because the people that own the house next door had 40 plus people over for four of the days. That included around 20 kids under age 12 and some loud adults until around midnight every night. (So much for getting away from it all) The pool was nice to cool off from the heat but had temperature issues during our stay so a couple of times it was too cold. Not to mention getting eaten alive by bugs..some unseen. This happened while sitting outside and while sleeping in the room. The bed was uncomfortable and has definitely seen some better days. Although the house is nice and probably has some very nice views on more clear days, we both agreeded this wasn't our favorite vacation spot for us.
Ouch! You are our 99th review. All others have been 5-star, except for one 4-star. Dan spoke with you several times during your stay and you said everything was great. I will respond to your complaints:
The Vog: admittedly bad during your stay. Winds were blowing it south into Kona. So while air quality was still safe, the horizon and skies were not all that pretty. The volcano makes its own weather- it was more overcast than usual. Kilauea has been erupting for over 30 years, but the current activity is unprecedented. You said you couldn’t enjoy the view. You told Dan the view was unbelievable. The vast ocean, the coastline, with spinner dolphins and the Kona fishing fleet, all still visible. The distant horizon was not so visible. Hopefully Pele will settle down soon!
The noisy neighbors: house is four lots away, but sound carries. Why didn’t you tell us? We will contacted the owners, who don’t know their guests are a problem unless someone tells them. They won’t be happy to know there were 40+ people there! Sometimes guests are playing in their pool enjoying their vacation. But not late at night. That’s not right.
The pool: The solar temp controller went out the day you checked in, but the issue was the high temp limit-it was getting too hot. The fact that the pool was cool in the am (it never gets below 80 degrees), is because it is solar heated.
The mosquitoes: Welcome to the Big Island! We warn all guests that there are bugs. We have tiger mosquitoes here, which are tiny and bite your feet and ankles. We have a very aggressive pest control program in place- not only do we treat our entire property between each guest, we also treat our only close neighbors’, who are not here often. They are worse when there is no breeze, so we provide fans, inside and out- they really help. We provide quality mosquito repellant. When we first bought the place, we had complaints, but have not had a guest even mention the mosquitos in years. We will ask future guests if they find them worse than expected.
The bed: first complaint we have ever had. It is an expensive bed, bought less than three years ago, with a pillow topper on it. We find it very comfortable. But we will start asking future guests how they find it as well.
Thanks for the input, and will use it to improve our wonderful home any way we can. Aloha.
Loved the house and the view and the pool.
Well above expectations. We were there during the volcanic activity and it had no affect on our stay whatsoever. The house is on the opposite side of the island from the ongoing eruption and is not impacted by it. We saw a little VOG.
The hosts were fantastic and the view was great. We wound up staying at the house every second day and just enjoying the lanai, the pool and the ocean view.
No one should believe that all of the island is part of the volcano. This house certainly isn't.
Thanks for mentioning that the volcano did not affect your stay! so crazy how the media coverage makes people thing the whole island is on fire. Meanwhile it's beautiful on 99% of the island!
More importantly, we are glad that you spent some time relaxing, which is what Rick's Place is perfect for.
This little house on the water is so beautiful and private. Loved our time here.
A relaxing and well equipped home
My husband and I enjoyed our stay at Ricks Place. It was everything it advertised. High lights were beautiful sunsets and star gazing. It was a plus to have use of a washer and dryer!
You guys left the place so clean! Thank you for being stellar guests
