Buyer beware
We were set to arrive on a Thursday. I sent a message via the VRBO app on Monday to ask about check-in details. No response. Sent another message Wednesday. No response. Sent a third message Thursday morning. No response. Getting increasingly nervous, I texted the contact person instead, at which point he did reply promptly and said he doesnât really get the messages through the app. He said he would send check-in details via text. A few minutes later, he called with urgent news: The renters checking out had clogged not one but both toilets and left a terrible mess. He offered an alternate apartment across the street. However, it was available for only 2 nights, not the 3 we had already paid for. In a bind because of scheduled events for a family wedding and because our group included a young couple with an infant, we agreed, hoping the original unit would be ready by Saturday so we could move there for the third night. A property manager would have access to a plumber and a cleaning crew in case of emergencies, right? Nope. We had to spend considerable time looking for last-minute accommodations for the third night (our group ended up having to split up). This cost all of us precious time that we had planned to spend together. Given the disruption, we asked for some kind of compensation in addition to the refund for the third night. Not only did the owner refuse but it took numerous texts to get even the third night refunded, which finally happened nearly 3 weeks later.
