A charming and characterful place to stay in Kyoto
Senraku House is close to Shijo Dori and very convenient for exploring Kyoto. There are lots of attractions within walking distance as well as the underground and a JR station. The house is beautiful - Thomas and Rieko have done an excellent job of renovating it. We really felt as though we were living in a Japanese home. The facilities are also very good, with a living room, fully equipped kitchen including a washing machine (which came in very handy!), comfortable bedroom and a spacious bathroom. It was great to be able to come back at the end of a busy day's sight-seeing, cook our own food and watch tv or use the laptop to keep in touch with friends and family. Rieko's communication from the booking through to keeping in touch while we were in Kyoto was really good, and the directions that she provided for finding the house were perfect. Thomas and Rieko left a welcoming letter with local maps and a very handy bus route guide, and some tips on places to visit that were holding special events, like the late night openings at Nijo Castle. The guest book in the living room was also a fun read and a good source of hints from previous guests on places to eat and drink.
The one thing we missed from previous self-catering stays in Kyoto was an electric rice cooker - we aren't experienced enough to make sticky rice in a pan and didn't want to damage the cooking equipment!
The house is easily big enough to accommodate up to four people. If you are tall, though, be warned - it is really easy to bump your head on the low doorways! We would recommend it for anyone who wants to experience a traditional Japanese house with modern amenities.
