It was here that Robert the Bruce is acknowledged to have come ashore when he sailed from Rathlin Island in Northern Ireland after his encounter with the spider in the early 14th century. The ancient Earls of Carrick had their seat at Turnberry Castle which today is a ruin. Today Maidens is a popular spot for visitors with its traditional harbour, extensive beach, a couple of restaurants and its close proximity to Turnberry and the spectacular Culzean Castle.
