Villa Alamanda - Quatre Chambres Villa, Couchages 8
With the feel of a cottage in the jungle, this heritage Balinese house is made from natural materials in order to harmonise with the environment. The entrance of Villa Alamanda is surrounded by exotic greenery - through here you'll catch your first glimpse of this beautiful retreat.
The villa has a traditional alang-alang roof and is decorated with Ubud's famous wood carvings. A beautiful turquoise pool is encircled with a sprawling garden filled with frangipanis, heliconias and sunshine yellow Alamanda flowers. After your swim, curl up among the colourful cushions on the shaded balé that overlooks the pool and Paliminan stone terrace. Ascend the unique wooden staircase to get a bird's eye of the pool among the canopy of palm trees.
Heritage textiles adorn buttermilk walls in the corridors, exposed wooden beams on the ceiling... Villa Alamanda just oozes rustic Balinese charm. All bedrooms have polished hardwood floors and traditional thatched roofs. The master bedroom has a huge king size bed to sink into and secret dressing room through the Louvre doors. Beyond this, you'll find a decadent ensuite bathroom with a sunken tub and views of the lush garden.
Two other bedrooms are called Cinnamon and Red, with matching colour schemes, king beds and private walled garden ensuites. The final bedroom is called the Garden Suite with its very own exclusive sundeck and fully enclosed marble bathroom - so luxurious!
The air-conditioned media room is perfect for cooling off as you watch a movie together on the flat screen television - there are sofas and comfy beanbags to chill out on. In the evenings, listen to the sounds of the jungle as you dine on a feast prepared by the villa's excellent in-house chef on the large open-sided terrace.

Nestled in a traditional village called Tenkulak just outside the cultural hub of Ubud, you'll have a truly authentic experience staying at Villa Alamanda. Get an insight into local life, watch hypnotic Hindu ceremonies that ignite the senses and feel truly swept away into the tranquil jungle setting.
Ubud is home to a dizzying array of sights and experiences. Visit the Ubud Art Market, bursting with beautiful ceramics, jewellery, Ubud wood carvings and textiles. Browse through the colourful, ornate handicrafts and practise your bargaining skills with the locals.
Bali is known as the 'Island of the Gods' and spirituality pours from every corner. For over a thousand years, Balinese Hindus have made pilgrimages to Tirta Empul holy water temple, where people cleanse themselves in the individual bathing stations outdoors. Nowadays, locals and tourists bathe side by side - it's a lovely and invigorating sight to see.
Ubud is home to many of the island's most spectacular waterfalls. Some cascades are well known, such as Tegenungan Waterfall, with its beautiful scenery, while others are rockier and require swimming. Little-known Kanto Lampo has an amazing wall of water, perfect for an icy shower to cool down.
Just a short drive away is Goa Gajah, also known as the Elephant Cave. This holy site dates back to the 11th century and believed to have housed Hindu priests of yore. It's also suggested that it was created as a place for spiritual meditation and the cave includes both Buddhist and Hindu imagery. The Ubud Palace is also a great place to see traditional Kecak dances. Every night, dancers in colourful costumes tell Hindu legends through dance.
In Ubud, there are countless classes you can take to enrich yourself, including Balinese cookery classes starting with a trip to the local market to buy supplies. Afterwards, you can enjoy the food you make together. Why not partake in yoga and meditation retreats, Balinese dance or music classes?
There are also plenty of great walks around the Ubud area, such as around Tegalalang, where you can see the UNESCO listed evergreen rice paddies in all their glory. Alternatively, a bicycle ride is a fantastic way to see the rice fields. The Campunan Ridge walk is another gentle path with a few hills that takes around 45 minutes to complete. It's particularly lovely in the soft morning light after sunrise.
There is a natural phenomenon in Petalu just north of Ubud - every evening white herons arrive at around 6pm for the night and fly away in the morning. Locals say that these birds are the reincarnated souls of those who died in a massacre in 1965. It's quite a sight to behold!
While there's plenty to entertain you in Ubud, it's easy to take day trips to other areas of Bali. Seminyak, Bali's premiere upscale beach resort is a short ride away. A playground for jet-setters, fashionistas and yogis, it's full of fashionable boutiques where you can shop til you drop and fancy spas. Indulge in a quintessentially Balinese massage and spend the day getting pampered. Seminyak has excellent nightlife, atmospheric cocktail huts and superb sundowners at beach clubs.
