Charming Villa sleeping up to 8 guests, marvellous view, swimming pool. This charming converted monastery nestles in the hillside hamlet of San Pietro a Marcigliano, not far north of the city of Lucca. In the centuries it has become the main building of the estate surrounded by many ancient buildings as barns and houses for the workers. The setting is incomparable and the views are wonderful. This is a hidden part of Tuscany, timeless, unchanging and away from the tourist track. The Monastery was built about 1550 and has been owned by our family since 1792. It has been converted to a family home while retaining the vital architectural integrity of the original buildings. Around the monastery is the property where olive trees and wine yards are the main cultures. We produce olive oil and an excellent wine; the old cave is just on the ground floor of the main building.

Behind the buildings are woods with many opportunities for walks or mountain biking.
Picturesque and magical. It was perfect! Would love to return again with more of our family. Maureen was so helpful and responsive. I recommend the wine tour which gives the story of this amazing place.
We loved our few days here. It is huge and the view is unbelievable. Weather wasnât the best sadly but we still have great evenings on the balcony looking at the view.
Great place to relax with good restaurant nearby snd walks you can do from the property. Well located to visit other places in Tuscany. Be prepared to do a few windy mountain roads! Lovely host Maureen - good comms
This was an amazing property with an amazing view of the countryside. The beds were great, the pool was clean and refreshing. The Manageress, Maureen was very accommodating and went out of her way to help us with rental car issues. I would absolutely stay here again.
Lots of space with a great view and the kids loved the pool. Our hosts were very supportive throughout the stay, and went above and beyond to make sure we were comfortable. The location is a little isolated which is part of the attraction, but there is an excellent restaurant right next door. Overall a great experience, and very thankful for Maureen's help during our visit.
Our stay could not have been better. The property is exactly as pictured and even more beautiful in person. Maureen was so easy to communicate with and left very helpful information on the area. Perfect spot for day trips to Lucca, Florence, Pisa and the train to Cinque Terre.
Loved views from the pool, sunsets from the balcony. Vineyard tours, canyoning, Lucca ⊠all fabulous. Property is huge and characterful. Criticism? Kitchen not brilliantly equipped for serious cooking. Would I go back? 100%! Thank you.
Set up in the hills overlooking the plains, the Old Monastery is a huge unique property with shared pool. We were excellently looked after by the house manager who contacted us prior to our stay to make sure we knew where to go and to offer local information. The rooms are large and comfortable. The kitchen was equipped with everything we needed including two large fridges, washing machine and dishwasher. There are multiple hairdryers and very usefully, several travel adapters which we only found at the end. When we had any questions or issues, they were dealt with immediately. Keep the shutters closed to keep out the Tuscan heat and bring mossie spray. Thereâs a fabulous restaurant at the end of the drive- you might need to book as it gets very busy.
Absolutely beautiful villa with an amazing view of the Lucca area.
Huge kitchen that was well stocked with plates, glasses, utensils, etc.
Two fridges!
The one thing the kitchen absolutely needs though is a large pasta pot!
The beds and pillows were very comfortable. The rooms were large.
The pool area was great, given how warm it was during our stay. Even the pool bathroom had a great view of the valley.
The kids loved Sam, the donkey. They looked forward to his visits each morning so they could give him an apple or carrot.
It took a while for me to get used to the drive up to the villa. We just donât have those kinds of roads in Canada!
Having said that, I would come back in a heartbeat (and a smaller car!).
The monastery is very spacious and is well equipped for self catering. The pool is beautiful and the views from the balcony are wonderful.
The views come at a price, it takes quite a while to get to from the town at the bottom of the hill via car. However, there is a very good restaurant at the bottom of the drive which was useful!
We asked for a cot and highchair for our son which the hosts were happy to provide and saved us from bringing more than we needed on the flight.
The rubbish collection is quite complicated, we tried our best to get it right but could not find the right bag in the supermarket for residual waste, it would be useful if this were provided for guests. We would also recommend new pillows.
Overall though we loved the property, the host was very helpful and friendly and the location was stunning. We would stay again.
This property has the most stunning view of Lucca and the valley below. Getting to the property can be tough. It is a small uphill road with many blind turns. Most definitely not recommended for a van like we did but is doable. There are a few different ways to get up there so just research your route. One of them goes through a town with a hairpin turn between 2 buildings that almost got us. But once we were up there we were greeted by our wonderful host Giovanna. She was very helpful in showing us around and making us feel at home. She was also just a WhatsApp message away if we needed her. Enjoy the beautiful pool overlooking the valley, or go on a hike up a trail above the property. It's a wonderful stay in property or just a 25 minute drive to the amazing town of Lucca. There is a grocery store in the valley that only takes about 15 minutes to get to by car that will fulfill all your grocery needs. Make sure you are back in time for the sunset over the hills with a big glass of wine and you won't regret it!
We had a fabulous stay, the property was absolutely beautiful, the views were stunningâŠit was clean and had everything we needed apart from some more bin bags and cleaning products would have been handy.
We didnât realise the pool was shared with other guests staying next door but it wasnât a problem. The pool was beautiful I think adding some new furniture would really make the area even more special.
The location was great and the near by ice cream shop & super market less than 10 mins drive away was brilliant. (Check for opening times though). The restaurant at the bottom of the drive way was great.
The roads are quite narrow but worth it to get to the property . The resident donkey was a real highlight. Would recommend this stunning place and hope to visit again. Make sure you have plenty of mosquito repellent as we didnât come prepared for them and realised on the last day there were plug-ins for them that we hadnât been told about. We drove to Florence, it took about an hour, Pisa was around 40mins drive and lucca about 30mins. We went on a day trip from lucca to cinque Terre that was absolutely beautiful definitely worth a trip if you have time. The location is great and easily accessible to all the beautiful towns. A wonderful stay and happy memories made thank you so much.
Beautiful historic house with great views! We spend a lot of time on the balcony enjoying the view. The historic atmosphere of the house multiplied the great Tuscan surroundings.
We thoroughly enjoyed staying at this property & would go back in a heartbeat! Our hostess, Maureen, was the best. She was always quick to respond to our needs & questions and even served as our interpreter when needed. We used this as our base for a 2-week visit to Italy and couldn't have asked for a better location for day trips, as well as overnights to Rome & Bologna/Venice. We spent most of our time here on the balcony, enjoying the wonderful view. Though the kitchen is a little rustic, it is well-equipped & we still managed several gourmet meals. To reach the property you must travel a very narrow road with lots of precarious turns, so if you're planning to rent a car, make sure it's a small one! (We had a Jeep Renegade.) Osteria da Batano is right outside the entry gate & is one of the best restaurants we've ever been to. We enjoyed several meals there & highly recommend it. Everyone we met associated with this property could not have been nicer. If we ever return to Italy, this is definitely where we'd stay! 5 stars all around!
