Sand Dune Lodge is luxury house completed in 2010 at the exclusive gated Heads subdivision.

Being the last driveway before the Surf beach carpark, it is just a short walk to both the surf beach and Picnic Bay (estuary). The modern open plan interior flows out onto an expansive deck providing stunning views over Mangawhai's famous sand dune and breaking surf toward Te Arai beach. It is also only a short walk along the beach to the start of the famous Clifftop walkway featuring breathtaking views.

The spacious house is beautifully appointed with NZ designed furniture, artwork and accessories as well as digital My Sky, a 42 LCD TV, DVD, iPod compatible minisystem, access to the shared tennis court and gas fireplace and for winter evenings. Three bedrooms feature their own private ensuites plus there is an additional separate toilet provided.

Beautiful views and location

A great bach for a small group, gorgeous views from the top of the hill. Great location for Mangawhai heads beach. Bach was a great size for our group of 5. We could also make use of the tennis courts with the bach rackets. Would love to see some other beach toys supplied such as body boards. Up a steep hill for the adventurous runners out there.

Family Reunion

Our families arrived from South Africa and Canada for a 3 week family reunion and this property ticked all of the boxes for everyone. We never got tired of the views or the daily beach walks/hikes. The kitchen amenities and barbecue made cooking easy and we ate in most of the time. It was a short drive to the new grocery store and if you don't want to eat in, the village offers a selection of eateries. However you do need a car to get around town easily. Communications with management was excellent and I wouldn't hesitate to book here again if we ever return.

Northland adventure

The house was very spacious and well equipped with beautiful views across to the sea. The living area was very comfortable space is very relaxing. The house is right up on the hill which means the sunsets and sunrises are beautiful but we did experience some unusually very windy weather which made the house shake her little! Also there was no air-conditioning upstairs bedrooms so after a hot sunny day it was very.at night

Hi Ann, Thank you for your review; we're thrilled that you enjoyed your stay. The views are indeed spectacular, and they bring a variety of weather experiences at that height. We agree that it has been quite hot at night recently. While there are ceiling fans in each room to help keep the temperature down, there is no air conditioning upstairs, only downstairs, as a note for future guests we do recommend the use of the ceiling fans. We stayed for 3 nights. Loved it. Better than the pics. Quiet and stunning and modern. Pros: So private, views from every room. Bathtub was amazing. Gas water so endless and good pressure. Three bathrooms ideal Cons: Two smaller rooms are quite small and the beds are quite soft. No Aircon in any of the bedrooms and there are no blinds in the kitchen or lounge, which none of that may matter to some but was our only negative feedback. We would still go back.

A Dream Mangawhai Vacation Home!

What an incredible stay! This hilltop gem in Mangawhai exceeded all expectations. The views were absolutely breathtaking — panoramic vistas of the rolling hills and sparkling ocean below made every moment feel magical. The home itself is a masterpiece of design, combining impressive style with comfort in the most seamless way. The open spaces, sleek modern furnishings, and attention to detail created a perfect, relaxed atmosphere.We loved the large windows that let in natural light and allowed us to take in the stunning surroundings from every room. The outdoor area was equally impressive, with a spacious deck perfect for lounging and soaking in the scenery.The property was impeccably clean and well-equipped, with everything we needed for a peaceful and enjoyable stay. Whether we were exploring the nearby beaches or simply enjoying the tranquility of the home, it was the perfect escape. The host was warm, friendly, and quick to provide helpful tips about the area.We can't recommend this place highly enough — if you're looking for a luxurious, stylish retreat with incredible views, this is the spot! We’ll definitely be back!

Beautiful views from an elevated location

The home itself was lovely and clean and the coastal sunrises were incredible. But I would have really appreciated a heads up on all the construction going on around this property. The aerial (drone) view shows the house as having plenty of space and privacy but a new build is happening just metres beside this house and the view right at the window was of metal construction fencing. There are at least 5 other new builds going on nearby. Outside the house the whole time were tradies vehicles, scaffolding trucks unloading, large machinery deliveries, the sound of nail guns, skill saws, concrete cutters, etc. I invested in this 'sanctuary' in a gated environment where I thought I would feel safe and peaceful. Maybe the owners could update the drone photo to reflect the true nature of the environment, the proximity of neighbours, and alert anyone booking in the next 6 months or so that there is a lot of construction going on up on this hill. I took it all in my stride and had a nice holiday but I did feel a bit bummed out.

Hi Nicolle, I am sorry to hear your disappointment. The house next door is nearly finished and it was our understanding that there was no significant noise during the day and other guests during the week haven't mentioned disruption (there is no construction on weekends under council rules). Unfortunately this house was due to be completed by Xmas and has dragged on due to COVID, supply delays, etc and we are hoping it shouldn't be much longer. Once it is completed we plan to updatee the photos as there is not much point prior as things ahve changed as the building has been completed. Also the fact there is a building next door shouldn't impact stays as it doesn't in any way impede the view and there are no living areas of the new house that look into the property. Lastly, it is hard to advise re general construction as there can be construction going on anywhere and distant construction shouldn't create any significant noise and is outside our and the owners control. Again apologies for any disruption to your stay and we appreciate your feedback.

Lovely property with great views

Very modern, well equipped house with lovely comfy beds and great views. Bring your own mosquito plug ins though as Superette had the refills but not the plug ins and we got bitten. Short (but quite steep) walk to lovely Mangawhai Heads beach (or 3 minute drive ). Need a car to get around as not much close by but everything you need is about a 10 minute drive away in Mangawhai including eateries. Museum is very good and worth a look as is Bennetts cafe and chocolatier and the Mangawhai Pub!
