Quaint classic Mount Desert Island house. Comfy beds, clean space, quiet and tucked away, sunny deck for morning coffee and reading, and exactly what we needed for a quick weekend getaway.
We enjoyed our stay in this cute cottage. Some of the family saw a deer in the yard or first morning there. It was close to the tourist places such as Acadia and Bar Harbor, but still far enough away if you wanted to be away from the crowds. We liked hanging out on the back porch and visiting in the evenings and mornings. Iâm a person who does well with written instructions, so those would have been helpful for me in regards to check in and check out procedures. (I realize not everyone needs that though.)
We had zero information about check in or check out. I had to reach out to her about how to get into the house. There was a bowl of water catching water from the toilet that was available for my children to play in. We lost electricity from a blown breaker and had to crawl into the root cellar to flip the breaker. We reached out to the property manager for information on location of the panel⊠manager never responded (even now 36 hours later). There is no water near the property, whatsoever. The pictures are misleading. The house is definitely old and charming, but not worth the stay.
This listing is poorly managed. When we arrived ( on time ) for our check-in the Host was nowhere to be found. She did not respond to any of the messages I sent her on VRBO app prior to traveling to MI. I was very upset and wondering if my two children and I will have a place to stay for the night. I called my husband and he was able to find her phone # on VRBO site. She finally responded to the text and let me know how to open the door. UNACCEPTABLE!Also, there were roaches. Musty smell. Was not very clean just sort of clean. Everything worked, except WiFi was down for the first day. The owner fixed it afterwards.
The house was not updated or perfect but it provided a comfortable place to rest after busy days hiking and site seeing. All the amenities worked well. And the location was good for our family.
This was a great location. Close to Acadia and Bar Harbor. The property was clean and perfect for 4 adults. There was room for 6-8 people. Checkin and out was easy. The back deck was lovely for morning coffee and an evening glass of wine.
We had a great stay! Also enjoyed the patio fireplace on the deck but we did spend most of our day time sight seeing but loved the location. Just a couple of things. Maybe add another mirror in bedrooms and extra propane tank available. This is an older home and does have a musky smell. We just opened up the house windows.
House was cute and clean. Loved being on the quiet side of the island. We saw deer in the front yard every morning and a few turkey as well. Also could hear some coy dogs howling at night.
I have stayed in many rentals over the years and have never had a bad experience until this one. We arrived at the house and went in. I went to put groceries in the fridge and found food residue on the shelf. Not the end of the world, I wiped it out with a Lysol wipe. While I had the wipes out I started wiping down the counters out of habit. They were not clean. I found crumbs and mouse droppings. I took a picture and messaged the host. I started looking around the rest of the house and found more droppings in the dining room floor and on the table. I messaged the host again. After 30 minutes we decided to look for somewhere else to stay and contacted VRBO. They started the process for a refund and reached out to the host as well. It took over a week to get a full refund including the CLEANING FEE! I am not someone who leaves bad reviews over something small like residue in the fridge but rodent droppings is disgusting!
The VRBO pictures and description were accurate. We entered via the back door with a key as instructed by email. When we opened the front door, an alarm sounded and we didn't know how to turn it off. A few minutes later the alarm stopped; maybe the owner was notified? A laminated info sheet in the cottage would be helpful, listing wifi and alarm information.
We had a great time at the house with our young kids. The attic bedroom was perfect for them, and while not a large or luxurious house overall we thought it had plenty of space for hanging out, eating, and cooking together. The deck and back yard are great, and we enjoyed being set back off the road.
The place was remarkably well stocked compared to other VRBOs we've stayed at. Communication with the host was good.
We'd definitely stay again if we come back to MDI!
Location nice, deck and grill nice. Check in was worrisome was not sure how to check despite reaching out multiple times ti.l the last min. Musty odor likely mold from roof leak over picture window.
Les points forts : Communication, emplacement, exactitude de lâannonce
Had to Move to another property. Water not working.
Location was exactly what we wanted but when we arrived the water was not working. Maybe there was a leak because the house was damp and musty. We had to move to another one of her properties that was an hour away. The other property was actually nicer. There was no hair dryer and I didn't want to buy one because I don't need one at home. The washer is up so high we had to drag a ladder found in a closet to reach it.
Location was perfect for us to explore all parts of the island, and quiet with room for kiddos to play outside and all spread out at the end of the day. Darling older cottage, and we appreciate the original hardwoods, trim, loft space and quirks of a historic home. The updates including the bathroom and lovely back deck were a bonus. The main issue we had was with the cleanliness (or lack thereof), and feeling like everything was dirty. We opened windows for evening fresh air and dirt/debris/bugs were caked in the sills and on the windows themselves. The refrigerator had visible mildew inside on shelves/trim, and on the water/ice dispenser. I had to clean it just to feel comfortable putting sealed food in it. The dishwasher and kitchen counters were equally grimy. The kitchen was generally well-stocked, though there are only three bowls, which made for extra rounds of washing dishes for our family to eat breakfast each day. We did appreciate the washer/dryer and detergent availability, as well as access to extra bedding and plenty of towels. I likely wouldnât stay again unless I had communication back from the host acknowledging my feedback about cleanliness, which I havenât, though it definitely has potential if itâs managed better.
This house has a lot of character. It it obviously old and should be treated as such. There are recent reviews that it smelled like mold or mildew and I have to disagree. It simply smelled like an old house that maybe hasn't been opened up as often as it should. The outside of the house looks to be in a little bit of disrepair but the inside of the house is fairly up to date and very clean. We were quite comfortable in this house. That said, it could definitely use some updating. Broken siding, broken concrete, old water marks on the ceilings. None of these things would keep me from renting this house again, but it does tarnish the first impression.
It should be noted that my wife tripped the circuit breaker while blow drying her hair in the bedroom. This caused most of the house to go dark on us and I had to go down to the cellar/basement and flip the breaker back on. Not really a downside since old houses have old wiring that didn't take all our modern devices into account. But it should be considered by future tenants.
All in all i give this property a 4 star rating because it was very clean, in a beautiful location (we saw our share of deer, wild turkeys, and birds through the windows), and when the power went out the owner responded quickly. I took away a star for the outside appearance and the fact that I tripped over the broken concrete on the front porch.
This was a great headquarters for our family vacation to Maine. We felt within driving distance of all we wanted to do, but far from the busyness of Bar Harbor. It is obviously an older home but overall it felt well maintained. For our family of five, we were pushing the space a bit (teenage daughter isnât used to sharing one bath!) but we made it work. Thank you for sharing your home with us!
The small cottage was located remotely which is what we were looing for. It was a 20+ min drive from the carriage trails on the other half of the island. Hodgdon seafood is two miles up the road, AWESOME local resource for your seafood needs while visiting.
On the negative side....
Upon arrival everything seemed very dirty & grimy. My wife cleaned the kitchen and bathroom with bleach. She washed the pots, pans, dishes, utensils, and bed linens. The toilet had a leak as did the front main window when it rained. The ice dispenser in the fridge had black mold all over it. The kitchen ceiling showed significant water damage. Not sure I would go back until some of these issues were addressed.
This was a perfect place for our family to call home while visiting MDI. The layout of the home was perfect for our 4 teenagers and us. We really appreciated having the washer & dryer right there for us to use. We would have really enjoyed using the outside gas fire pit on the deck but unfortunately the mosquitos were horrible while we were there, so we didn't spend much time outside.
My family and I had a lovely time at this home! We loved how it was in the quiet areas of Acadia, away from the busy more touristy Bar Harbor. It was close enough to enjoy all the park has to over in just a short drive. We loved exploring the town of West Tremont as well!
The listing is accurate to the home - it is a cottagey, cozy feel - and has only the essentials. There is "2" rooms upstairs as listed, but be aware, you must walk through the loft room to get to the 2nd room, so less privacy. We loved the outdoor patio/firepit!
Overall, we enjoyed our stay and it was everything we needed! :)
We enjoyed our stay. The house was perfect for our family. Great outdoor space with the deck and fire pit.
Our kids loved the upstairs bedrooms
The location was amazing. We liked being on the quiet side of Acadia
We enjoyed staying at this cottage. This cottage was clean and well stocked with everything we needed for a comfortable stay. Although a bit of a drive to most Acadia trails, it was so nice having quiet place to come back to after a full day of hiking. We loved the privacy and ability to have a bonfire in the back yard.
This vacation home has been in the family for 3 generations. The home was built by my grandfather Arthur Bragg and Oz Tolman. They were in business together and ran a poultry farm. Eva Tolman his wife was a local artist and resided in the home in her retirement and painted. Many of her original paintings remain in the house to this day.
The property is secluded and peaceful. The ocean air and views of the water are so relaxing. Itâs super close to all that Acadia National Park has to offer.
