Great location, too hot for us!
Here is the good and the bad of this house:
Good - Location. It is so awesome to walk out the back door right onto the beach. It's the reason we chose this house. It feels like you have your own private beach. The beach is great, we saw multiple sea turtles and caught some good waves boogie-boarding.
It's really close to the grocery store and whatever limited restaurants are in this area. Just understand that this area is not really developed with a lot of sit-down restaurants or anything. For us it was really nice to be so close to PCC and the LDS Temple.
Bad - The house was so hot! Like unbearably hot. There is no Air Conditioning. Maybe it differs based on the time of year, but we were there in July and it was uncomfortably hot inside the house. We couldn't even stand to be inside. It was easily 10-15 degrees hotter in the house than outside. We measured the inside temperature at 86 degrees! That made it almost impossible to sleep at night. There was a breeze down on the beach but the breeze didn't make it through the house at all. Again, maybe this is only a problem in July, but it was a major problem for us. I was actually pretty miserable inside the house. The fans didn't help. It wouldn't be that much for the owners to get a couple of those portable A/C units (1 per room) or those A/C units that go above the door like at the PCC.
If this house had some type of cooling system it would have been 5 stars. Everything else about it was great.
FYI - I bought 2 brand new boogie boards and left them at the house because theirs were old and hammered. Enjoy.
Laie is a terrific base for exploring the north shore and we loved our 5 days here. The house is extremely comfortable, beds are great, kitchen well appointed (no dishwasher tho) and the beach is spectacular.
The house is only a 5 min walk to the shops and supermarket (all closed on a Sunday as it’s a Mormon town). I wouldn’t say there are decent dining options on the north shore, but plenty of good food trucks. But make sure you get to them before 6.30pm when they all close. It’s more a cook at home place I think. Supermarkets up here seem more expensive than near Honolulu and more limited. If you are thinking of staying for a long time I’d do a Costco shop and stock up before you get here.
Hikilau Hale Heaven
We wanted a place away from all the traffic and congestion and we found it here. On the beach, very clean and quiet. The property owners have taken care of everything and when I needed to contact them they responded right away. The kitchen is well equipped and the bathrooms were very nice with the master overhead shower making you feel like your in a waterfall! The beach could not be more accsessable and quiet. Foodland is a 10 minute walk away for very convenient food and sundry needs. We had a great time and I’m sure your family and friends will too!!
We thoroughly enjoyed staying at Hukilau Hale. The location is convenient for visiting the PCC, the LDS Temple Visitors Center, for purchasing groceries, and a perfect place for playing on the beach. We appreciated how clean and well maintained this property is, as well. The backyard is not as private as we had expected, and the traffic from the highway is easily heard from the master bedroom, but that didn’t keep us from having a great time.
