Good vibes abound in this Historic Downtown Grass Valley cottage. The Prospector's Cottage was built during the gold rush but has undergone a complete renovation to give it a modern feel while retaining its historic charm. Have a drink and relax on the front porch overlooking the neighborhood. Enjoy the Sierra foothills weather in the spacious outdoor dining and living areas. Walk to the many shops, restaurants, bars, and cafes or gather with friends in the bright & open kitchen/dining room. The house was built in 1880, but has a bright, modern, rustic feel throughout. It is about 1379 sq. ft. with 3 bedrooms and 2 full bathrooms. The kitchen and dining room are in one larger space that is great for groups. The kitchen is well appointed for your vacation meal prep needs with new Bosch & LG appliances There are nice outdoor gathering areas for when the weather is nice. One bathroom is newly renovated with a spa like shower and the other retains its historic charm with a clawfoot tub / shower combination. Each bedroom has blackout shades and two of the bedrooms have remote work desk areas. The main bedroom has a standing desk. The WiFi is super fast so you can stay connected to your work while enjoying the Sierra foothills. The living room has a Samsung smart TV and a Roku that you can use to stream any content that you have access to. Guests have private access to the entire property with the exception of the detached garage which is used for storage. The property is set-up for self check-in, and there is a local co-host available if needed. We are a couple of blocks from historic downtown Grass Valley. It is a quiet neighborhood with houses from the late 1800's and early 1900's. Walk to some of the best cafes, bars, restaurants, and shops in the county. The streets are narrow in this neighborhood and not suitable for a large RV. Full-size pickups or vans will fit just fine. We love to park at the property and walk. There are many great places in walking distance. There is parking space for 3 cars in the driveway. The driveway for the house is off of Harper St., and is easier to approach from behind the house. As a result, we suggest driving past the house on Washington St, and then going around the block (see our guidebook). This is a quiet close-knit neighborhood. Please be respectful of our neighbors.
My family, including kids, grandma, and our dogs, had a great stay. This house itself is very clean, the furniture is very comfortable, and they have many amenities to make a pleasant stay. I personally think this host goes out of their way to be hospitable. The house has many things to show they care and all the amenities of home. The location is also great! It is walkable to the downtown area, and a short drive to many trails. Overall, 10/10 recommend!
We can't say enough about our stay at Prospector's Cottage. The location couldn't be better and the property was clean, modern and sooo comfortable. The large front porch is perfect for a morning cup of coffee and for reading!! We had two dogs, one large and one small, and the owner has made this dog friendly and welcoming!! We will return!!!!
This is our second trip to the Prospectorâs Cottage. We layout of the house is perfect for our family. Everyone has their own space. We love walking to downtown Grass Valley and walking our pups thru the neighborhood. Thank you!
My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed the house, property, and location! It is decorated with class, comfort, and great attention to detail. The layout of the house was ideal for us and the extra pet amenities get a HUGE thumbs up! The binder of information and labels placed around the house were super useful. The property is big, private, and perfect for outdoor activities (BBQ, corn hole, and visiting). The local dining was delicious (Chinese, Mexican, and Italian) - Mariaâs Mexican restaurant is steps from the house and I highly recommend enjoying a meal from this restaurant. Thanks for sharing this gem of a house.
We went to Grass Valley for few days because of it's proximity to the Sierras. It is close to the snow, without having to content with it. There are mant sights to see in town and the cottage is very close to downtown. It has been a pretty dry year as far as snow is concerned, but we had no trouble finding it as we headed up Hwy 20. There are plenty of USDF roads that we found past Washington Lookout. Places we were able to get out and play in the snow that were back, off of the main highway. The cottage itself is very charming and has everything a family could possibly need. The house was originally built in 1880 but has all of the modern comforts we could ask for. We would definitely stay here again. Very clean and comfortable. Grass Valley is a charming miuntain town, we will be back!
We had an amazing time exploring the Grass Valley and Nevada City Area. The house was immaculate and they provided everything we needed. We were able to walk to downtown Grass Valley for dinner and shopping and got to see the Christmas tree lighting. Such a wonderful stay and great house!
What a beautiful cottage in a convenient location. Walking distance to restaurants, shopping, and more. The amenities were above and beyond. The outside space offered not only multiple seating options to enjoy the views and spectacular sunsets, but seating options, and grill in the back. Definitely look forward to a return visit.

Upon arrival at the cottage, my family and I felt welcomed as if we were at home. Beautifully appointed, with great attention to detail that provided every comfort needed and beyond for a wonderful stay. Perfect location to walk downtown. Mornings enjoying a cup of coffee on the front porch taking in the tree-lined views were magic. We were sad to leave and are already looking forward to our next stay in 2025. Highly recommend this beautiful property.
PC was our base to explore Californiaâs gold country, Lake Tahoe, the Yuba River, Donors pass and lake as well as other activities. It was clean and comfortable. We came âhomeâ every day exhausted from hiking, swimming, shopping, and playing. The cottage was perfect for our needs. Much nicer and more comfortable than any hotel room. It afforded us time to our selves after our fun filled days to reflect and relax. I would definitely stay again. Recommend 10/10 The Smiths â€ïž
We were greeted by the property manager, Jen, who was so kind, genuine and eager to help us get settled in! From there it just got better! Everything we expected and needed for a restful stay in the beautiful historical town of Grass Valley. The home was walking distance from everything we needed. There was enough space for family to hang out with each other or to come together for a meal and play card games. The backyard patio was spacious and relaxing. Great place to have morning coffee and play a little bit of corn hole! We definitely marked the cottage as our #1 place to stay when we return to Grass Valley.
Thanks, Don, for sharing your cottage with my family - you have a very beautiful and relaxing home!

5 Star Home, Sweet Neighborhood and Great Walkability to Town
This is a beautiful vintage family home that has been lovingly maintained. It is charming and yet has been updated everywhere. The host is very helpful, accessible and considerate. We loved the gracious front porch, the yard is secure for animals and children, the big kitchen with windows overlooking the rose garden is marvelous. It is a short 5 minute walk to town and that is outstanding! Downtown is vibrant and alive with many things to do. The home was immaculately clean, fresh, and nicely decorated. The kitchen has everything you need and the home is well stocked with common products you need for your stay. We will for sure return.
Great location with a very nice remodel of an old home. Kitchen and bedrooms are very nice. Back yard is a great outdoor gathering place, even though it was too cold for that during our stay. People with mobility issues should be aware there are some step downs, as this is one of the older original houses (I used to walk by this house in the early '60's, and it wasn't a new house then.). The host was quick to respond to my questions. We had a great stay and I would stay here again!
This place is high quality, looks great inside, and has everything you need for a nice stay. The short walking distance to downtown GV is great, and you're a short drive away from Nevada City and other places to see. The home is well stocked, quiet, and while we couldn't use the back patio due to rain - the space would be excellent in the sunshine.
Overall, exactly what you look for in a 5 star stay. Would stay again!
The house was wonderful--so comfortable and cozy. The kitchen was well stocked with the necessities and had good work space. We also loved the outdoor space although the winter weather did not permit much lounging outdoors. The fenced in area was just perfect for our dog to play fetch. The owners provided for furry friends as well, with towels for drying pets, treats, water bowls, etc. We could not have asked for better communication with the owner and manager. The ability to walk to town in just a few minutes was a real plus. Also, we enjoyed walks in the neighborhood, which was quiet and lovely. We spent 8 nights at the house and didn't want to leave! Can't wait to go back.
We loved our stay at the cottage! We loved the layout and space. Each room was very spacious and smartly decorated. The backyard was private. Everyday weâd walk the block to downtown for shopping and lunch. Weâll definitely be back!
My family and I had a wonderful visit to Grass Valley! We enjoyed the downtown location of the beautiful Prospectorâs Cottage. We changed the number of guests after we booked and the local host was very helpful and quick to respond to the request. We would stay again without hesitation at this wonderful rental when visiting Grass Valley.
It was perfect. This house has absolutely everything you would ever want or need and then some. Owners have gone to great lengths to add a lot of special touches to really make you feel at home. The location is perfect and the he is pristine. Great accessibility for my elderly father who is mostly in a wheelchair and uses a walker around the house. Couldnât have asked for anything better. Thanks!!!
From schedule to return and
everything in between: MAGNIFICENT. The entire supporting staff did a professional job in maintaining a most beautiful house. Many thanks.
We so enjoyed our stay at the Prospectors Cottage. We were there for a wedding and I only wish we had time to truly enjoy the place. The cottage was adorable and well appointed. The yard was so peaceful. It was a wonderful place and we would stay again in a heartbeat!
This remodeled historic home was fantastic! Within walking distance to downtown, this remodeled home was everything we could ask for. From the beautiful large kitchen, with every conceivable kitchen appliance, to the equally large laundry room, 2 modern bathrooms, 3 comfortable bedrooms, plenty of onsite parking, plus a huge outside area for entertainment, this home is a gem.
Any questions that I had were answered quickly by Jenny
who was my contact and a delight to speak with.
I live in Pittsburgh PA but love visiting Grass Valley as we have family and friends in the area. We also have Jenny who is our local host that can meet with guests if they have any needs while staying at the house.
This is a close knit neighborhood that is just 2 blocks from downtown and the newly renovated plaza on Mill St. We love walking to the many restaurants, bars, wine shops, coffee houses, and quaint shops. We also love going to the river, Nevada City, and Lake Tahoe from the house.
The Prospector's Cottage is unique as it combines historic details (built in 1880) with modern design and touches. The house has been completely renovated. The front porch is a great place to hang out and enjoy the peaceful view of the neighborhood. The fenced-in back patio has a pergola with 2 giant outdoor couches, a dining table that can seat 10.
