It's a beautiful cabin, the "welcoming committee" of dogs is adorable. The mattresses on the beds were sagging a bit, but it was overall a great place to stay.
Pictures of Dog Trot do not do this gem justice. It truly is an experience staying in this historical cabin. So relaxing. We made a camp fire our last big there. Watched deer and turkeys from the front porch and patio. Gorgeous property. Suzy is a wonderful and accommodating host. We rented this again for a few days in October to take advantage of the fall foliage. Can't wait.
The cabin was very comfortable and had everything we needed. We didnât have much time to explore the area, but we will be back! The host was very hospitable and communicated well. Very neat historic cabin. The hostâs dogs were super friendly and sweet too!
We stayed four nights. The log home is even nicer than the pictures. Very comfortable and clean. Suzy the host was so hospitable, she had coffee stuff and and snacks available in the home for guests. Very peaceful setting, so easy to relax in. The front porch and rear patio were awesome to have our coffee on. We would definetely go back. We love history and antiques so this was a perfect place for us to stay.
We had a great time staying at the Dogtrot cabin! The cabin was comfortable and the setting was soo relaxing. Suzy was a wonderful host and her love of the place shines through. We hope to return again.
We had a great time staying at this authentic and modernized mountain cabin. The kids loved the quiet surroundings with excellent restaurants within a 15 minute drive. Farm dogs were wonderful! They would great my children each morning. Suzy was great. She responded to my every message. An incredible and relaxing stay.
This was our second visit to the Historical Dogtrot Chestnut Log Cabin and it was as wonderful as the first. This is such a beautiful area and the history of the cabin make it a truly unique experience. The owner is kind, generous and truly loves the property and hosting guests which only makes it better.
WE loved this little place in this historic house. The house was nicely refurbished, with added modern conveniences, There wasnât TV to watch, but that is exactly what we wanted for our getaway. We liked the fact that we could have wi-if to look up local attractions. The house has split unit heating and air in the rooms, so we could adjust temperatures as needed. New modern bathroom was very nice. There isnât much privacy as we could hear what our friends were saying and talking about, so if you are traveling with friends, be aware that the house doesnât have much sound insulation. This only added to the charm for us. Decor was vey true to the style of the house and the beds and large comfy couch were nice perks. Outside is a nice fire pit for enjoying being outside at night. Quiet and calm. There are friendly rescue dogs on the property that come to visit and hang out. Our friend had brought her dog along and he had a blast exploring the property and interacting with the ownerâs dogs. There was a slight mixup about when we were to arrive, but that was addressed right away and fixed. The owner was very friendly and helpful, we enjoyed visiting with her and she even brought us a delicious home made dessert one night that was perfect. As far as the area goes, there isnât much to do unless you are willing to take a little drive, but that didnât bother us as we were just there to escape and relax. There is a nice hiking trail on the property.
From the moment we were welcomed to this cozy cabin with plenty of firewood for the indoor and outdoor fires, we enjoyed exploring around outdoors as well as the nooks and crannies
Southern hospitality at its Best with a wonderful welcoming committee! Suzy's attention to detail is like no other! Cozy and comfy cabin with all the amenities that you need to relax into nature. Acres and acres of trails to delight 2 and 4 legged explorers with fantastic guides; Dez, Remy & Ellie. We enjoyed our first visit so much that we returned for 10 nights this time around - will definitely return again. Our deepest loving appreciation Suzy for all that you share!
This is our third time visiting, and we always love the time to disconnect a bit and just be with our family. The cabin is just great with it's historic presence combined with some modernizations. We enjoy hiking around the property with our dog and with Suzy's dogs leading the way for us
We love coming here.
Thoroughly enjoyed our stay! Cabin was clean and had all the basic necessities. Could use a microwave and a full size refrigerator, but otherwise well-appointed. The cabin and its history were very interesting. Host was helpful and easy to communicate with. Would definitely stay again.
We had a wonderful stay in this cozy cabin. Suzy was an EXCELLENT host and went above and beyond to be welcoming and helpful. Her communication prior to arrival was wonderful and a great help as we were traveling up during Tropical Storm Ian for a wedding. The cabin was great and we loved sleeping with the rain on the tin roof. My kids enjoyed all the treats Suzy left for us in the cabin. Beds were very comfortable! We will have to return when the weather is better and we can really enjoy the area!
We had a wonderful time this past weekend. The peace and quiet was fantastic. The dog had a great time running around and investigating. We enjoyed cooking dinner on the grill and relaxing on the patio. Thank you for your hospitality!!
This is a great place to. Everything was just perfect. Suzy (host) is wonderful. She really keeps the place stocked with all your necessities. Wonderful location and the 1860s cabin is amazing. They have done a unbelievable job restoring it. Will definitely stay there again and HIGHLY recommend it!! John
My name is Suzy. Currently, my son Toney and I live here at Maple Spring Farm. We grow hops, a few blueberry bushes, as well as hardwood, and pine trees. We enjoy cycling, hiking, camping, and music. One of my favorite things to do is dive into the history of this beautiful old mountain farm and help my guests learn about and enjoy the tons of fun in the area.
The Dogtrot log house is a relic of a life gone by in these old mountains. The Chestnut trees used to build it were abundant in this area until they began to die out from blight. The wood is incredibly bug resistant and very sturdy. A Dogtrot is two log houses with a breezeway in between that were all roofed over as one house. The breezeway was typically sided and had the front and rear doors of the home. This home has some apotropaic symbols which are said to keep out the evil spirits. The original ceiling in the bedrooms has been preserved as it was and a new roof adorns this old house. The original owner was a free African American man named George Washington. He and his wife and children moved here from New York after the Civil War. He was a farmer /laborer according to U.S. Census records. The logs were cut here, and the stones used to build the chimneys and foundation were also found on the property. The mortar was made from sand, clay and creek water below the house. The floorboards, made of old growth poplar and yellow pine in the living room were originally upstairs in a bedroom lining the walls. The original chinking was removed and replaced with modern day insulation, lath, cement, and plaster. Of course, the entire process of restoration has been somewhat of an archeological dig in a sense. It is truly amazing what pops out of the ground when footers and patios are dug. The restoration was completed by a whole bunch of friends, neighbors, some independent contractors and the grace of God. It was a long haul. Nothing makes us more happy than to know Mr. and Mrs. Washington's amazing home lives again and will be enjoyed and appreciated by many friends old and new for a long time to come. Relax and take in the sights, sounds and fresh air. As the "aka" implies(lower head, lift feet) the perfect imperfections of this handmade home from the earth make it all the more ideal.
Rare, historically preserved Chestnut log home. Lots of nature, fresh air, excellent drinking water, and wildlife. We even have a resident (outside) black snake that keeps the rodent population in check.
