Terri, Thanks for the feedback and constructive criticism. As you may know, my wife and I are not the owners of the cabin, but just take care of it for our neighbor. You are spot on about the cabin needing updating. The bathroom floor is indeed torn and stained and the subfloor needs to be completely replaced. However the floor is not unsafe. The cabin is not built over a crawl space and the floor was most probably built on small cedar logs laid on the ground for floor “joists.” Those logs have rotted and are spongy, but there’s no worries about the floor collapsing since it literally sitting on the ground. It was in the current condition over a dozen years ago when my wife and I started doing the cleaning and light maintenance of the cabin and hasn’t gotten any worse. The owner agreed a couple of years ago that bathroom floor (and ceiling for that matter) needs to be replaced. We couldn’t find a contractor last year to take on the job, but we are currently looking for someone to do the job after this rental season. We currently have bids for replacing the kitchen counter and “Lazy Susan” storage area. The rotted roof support next to the entrance has also been in that condition for years. It’s a cosmetic flaw but doesn’t affect the structural integrity of the roof so we haven’t pursued a fix, but I suppose we should. As you know my wife and I were attending a reunion in Guam for the two weeks before you arrived. For those two Saturdays we depended on a couple of other neighbors to do the cabin cleaning. Even though my wife and I have been cleaning the cabin for years there are undoubtedly spots that we miss – there are a lot of nooks and crannies in a log cabin. We did give our substitute cleaners a couple weeks of basic training before we left, but we’re not surprised that spots were overlooked. We do sincerely apologize for the missed dust and cobwebs. We did see the dust that you mentioned as soon as we went in to tidy up after your departure. As for the “musty smell” that you mention, we’re not sure what to say, everyone’s sense of smell is different. The cabin does have a “log cabin” smell but the only complaints about odors that we have ever had were back when pets and smoking were allowed. We did discover a leak under the kitchen sink when we were cleaning after your departure and some water had pooled up under the lazy susan in the cupboard to the left of the sink. That may have contributed to a musty smell but we haven’t noticed any change in smell in the dozen odd years that we have been cleaning the cabin. Again, we appreciate the feedback and much appreciate the excellent condition that you left the property in after your stay. Dave Van Hammen 2023 Postscript: We have finally been able to get some contractors in to totally remodel the bathroom and have installed a quick-recovery 40 gallon water heater. the kitchen also has new cupboards, countertop and lazy Susan.
