Location:
This beautiful modern villa facing the Atlantic coast is only 15 minutes from the vibrant town of Cascais or the world heritage site at Sintra.
The local beach with its beautiful white sands backed by sand dunes can actually be seen from the villa and is only a 20 minutes walk along a woodland path. Due to its privileged position on the western edge of the National Park this fabulous beach is fully protected from any tourist development. Guincho beach is truly beautiful and unspoiled, perfect for kite and windsurfers. The sea can be tricky, powerful currents and big waves at times make swimming challenging, it is always watched over by lifeguards in the summer time. It is a great beach to relax on just taking in the sights and sounds and especially in the evening to watch the spectacular sunsets which are guaranteed. The big sand dunes offer great walks one starts roughly opposite the old fortress Fortaleza do Guincho with boardwalks and meandering paths providing stunning views. Cascais and Sintra offer some of the best beaches and water sports opportunities in Portugal, if you head a little further towards Estoril the beaches are more sheltered, whereas around Cascais and Praia das Macas you get magnificent surfing waves. North of Cascais at Praia da Adraga, you have your classic picture postcard Portuguese beach with dramatic cliffs, jagged rocks and golden sand.
If it’s a golfing holiday you are after, there are several courses to choose from nearby. The courses here are special not just because the locals keep them in such great condition, but the incredible thought which has gone into their designs to really incorporate the natural beauty of the region they inhabit. The immaculate course at Quinta da Marinha Golf Resort is particularly special, with the added bonus that your round will not be grudged as there is something here for the whole family, whether it be tennis, squash, swimming or horse riding.
Cascais has the classic beach town vibe now but once it was a humble fishing village and defence outpost, it was transformed into a stylish summer resort following the attention of King Louis 11 who used the city as his summer residence. Now it has much more to offer: history, epic street art in the form of many incredible giant murals painted on the gable ends of properties throughout town and stunning centuries old architecture as well as a myriad of cobbled street with cafés, restaurants and bustling bars to tempt you out of the kitchen. Should you want to make the very best of the facilities at Villa Fiori the farmers market has a fantastic selection of local delicacies. And of course, there are the beaches and the harbour, taking you back to the very origins of the town.
Sintra is one of the most beautiful and unique places in Portugal, the castles and enchanting gardens, Pena Palace is particularly special and well worth the climb up to it.
If per chance you were to be on holiday in early October, take a trip to Estoril, the old F1 track from the 80’s comes alive again, to hear the roar of the engines, smell the gas and hear the roar of the crowd at the Estoril Classics would be a wonderful experience.
Lisbon is just a half hour drive or an hour by train should you want to take a day away from the sun, sea and sand. To enjoy the amazing capitol city of Portugal sitting nestled amongst seven hills you need to put on your walking shoes, but remember to cheat a little and hop on one of the bright yellow trams to give your feet a rest from making your way through the cobbled streets. The old city’s pastel coloured buildings, melding with the new, the Tagus ferries and the vibrant café culture make for an unforgettable day out.
