The photos on the listing are accurate. Lovely setting overlooking the water. The view was enjoyed from the deck and the eating area. There was an eagle that we saw everyday. In addition there was a seal which came to visit. Katie was extremely helpful and responsive to our questions. Highly recommend.
It was so nice sitting on the deck with our coffee watching the two bald eagles every morning (except the 3 days it rained) Everything was great. The bed was so comfortable--we slept so good. The only bad thing was you couldn't drink the water--it also had a bad smell. So we had to use botted water. We were given 2 gallons but had to buy 2 more because we used it to make our coffee.
Our week at the Summer House in Georgetown, ME was delightful from start to finish! The cottage was very up to date, comfortable, and well stocked!!! The kitchen was well stocked with apliances and pots/pans. The dishes were the best we've ever had in a short time rental! The manager was in touch to determine if we needed anything (we didn't!). The view of the Back River was enhanced by all the windows! We loved the ease of renting kayaks. All of us enjoyed every day thanks to the SummerHouse and its management as our home for a week. We hope to return!!! We recommend with no reservations to guests who want a very special cottage!!!
We have stayed here before and found it to be a good experience, and it was overall as the location is wonderful, the dining space works really well for meals and games, the deck is wonderful, and the space is private. However, the house is becoming more dated, particularly the kitchen with hodgepodge of very old dishes, pots, and pans, not very many mugs or glasses and not organized well. The dishwasher is VERY old and coupled with the salty water, dishes never feel very clean. There were only a few rolls of toilet paper, one roll of paper towels and very little laundry soap provided, and that is with the expectation that sheets and towels are washed by us upon departure (which we knew, but could not do) and the knowledge that there were 6 of us. We had an issue with the 2nd floor shower leaking through to the 1st floor on day 2, so it became unusable for the remainder of the trip and 6 people had to then use one shower. We really are a low key family who do not like to complain, so we managed it well, but we would not have chosen this house with only one shower available to us. The property manager was contacted and responded, but it was then another few days, at our prompting, before we knew that it would not be addressed during out stay. We did receive some financial compensation for our inconvenience.
Summer house sits at the point where the view is so spectacular you won't want to leave the deck. We loved the privacy, peace and quiet this house gave us and the kayaking was wonderful. Sitting and watching the sunrise, listening to the birds sing and fish jump was the favorite part of each day. We even were visited by a little seal each day. LOVED THIS PLACE!!
The cottage was lovely - tucked down a winding road an easy drive from the quaint town of Bath and local groceries and amenities. Sitting on a point along the river, it was easy to enjoy many morning coffees watching the tidal water flow by...catching a glimpse of bald eagles, geese and other birds.
The cottage is well-stocked with kitchen supplies linens and towels. The hosts provided us with bottles of water to get our week started.
We enjoyed trips just down the road to Reed State Park for swimming and exploring and yummy dinners at Five Islands Lobster, as well as, day trips to Boothbay Harbor and Wiscasset.
The upstairs loft is super cute with great natural light and views of the water. NOTE: if you are tall, you will find it a bit challenging to stand upright in parts of the upstairs. The main floor has a great space with lots of windows and again...great views.
We enjoyed our time at the Summer House.
lovely cottage with a relaxing view of the river. kitchen has needed items, owners provide starter bottle water because itâs well water which has strong sulfur smell. house is at end of dirt road so good for morning dog walk. the upstairs has slanted roof lines so better for short people but not little ones unless spiral staircase is blocked. fans are available and we used them upstairs but main level was very comfortable at night ( and day). easy access to kayaks but as a paddler, some of the kayaks need repairs if planning on going into the kennebec river, ( eg rudders). comfortable beds, easy access to reid state park and there are access points to the nearby lake for swimming but requires driving to it. we had our dog with us and it was a great place for her and comfortable for the 4 of us. loved having coffee in the morning and drinks in the evening on the deck
We had a great time staying for 2 weeks. The view is wonderful, we loved watching the tides ebb and flow. Saw many kinds of birds and even a river otter! The cottage was very clean and pretty. We didn't notice any smells, so that issue a prior reviewer mentioned is gone. I will say the floors are very uneven, so if you have balance issues, be careful. Eat at 5 Islands as often as possible! Oh, we also used a lobster pot multiple times. Fun!
All tucked in down a dirt road , quiet and beautiful views . Very nice and helpful family owned place. We just enjoyed the location so much . Reid State park is so close and is Stunning ! Five Island Lobster Restaurant is right down the street, I think we ate there just about every day .
Lobsters were so sweet .
So much to do âŠ. Swimming , boating , hiking , Shopping in Bath was fun , great stores and a great little coffee shop !
We will be back.
This house is situated in an ideal location. The views and atmosphere of the river are the highlight. We enjoyed watching seals, bald eagles, and jumping bass.
The hosts were available if needed but left us alone to enjoy our stay. Close to beaches and lobster and all the best Maine has to offer.
There were a few not so ideal issues with the house. This is more of a camp house than I realized. It did not seem to have been deep cleaned in quite some time. There were cobwebs in cupboards and crumbs in couches. The showers were not great. The majority of the home is carpeted and, being a pet friendly house, was very musty and smelled. This is not an allergy/asthma friendly house. If the carpets were replaced with hard flooring and the bathrooms updated, it would be much better.
One more tip: you may be better off bringing your own linens if you do not want to wait around on departure morning for the wash and dryer to complete. We were using each bed so it took a long time and many loads to wash everything. We ended up leaving at the checkout time with items still in wash and dryer.
Overall our family vacation was wonderful. Given the issues I addressed I do not think we would rent this house again without updates being made.
What a lovely cottage this is! The location is perfect, the interior even nicer than it looks in photos, and the view of the river is exquisite, from the deck, the dining room, and one of the upstairs bedrooms. You overlook a little boat docking area so it's fun not only to see waterbirds and jumping fish, but folks paddling by in kayaks and other boats. Very quiet, truly pristine.
Proximity to Reid State and the free pass is a huge plus. The kitchen is only modestly supplied with equipment-- a blender would be a good addition. Lovely to have the spring water already in fridge! You will need it-- about the only drawback here is that the water smells and tastes pretty awful. As drawbacks go, that's pretty small!
Cottage is sun-lit, comfy, inviting and roomy. It is so peaceful here, a true taste of Old Maine. Everything is convenient. Owners and managers are quick to respond. We had a little confusion over kayak rental, but I have no doubt we could iron out any mis-communication easily. The Summer Cottage embraces you from the moment you walk through the door.
We will be back!!!!
This location was beautiful for someone new to this part of Maine. We loved the tranquility of it and the nature. The owners are very friendly and responsive. Lobsters cooked at home were so good! We loved Popham beach and all of the surrounding area, including quaint Bath and the town extensive pottery maker in Georgetown. The cottage is very cozy and beautifully set.
On a less positive note, be prepared for the bugs at the peak of summer! Also the water is not drinkable as many coast dwellings have their own wells which we didn't know.
We enjoyed our stay very much. The setting on the river was great and it was wonderful to watch the effects of the tide coming in or going out. The road leading in was a great pl;ace for us to walk our dog.
The pictures truly don't do the property justice!!! We spent SO much time sitting on the deck or the dock. Mornings were enjoyed sipping coffee watching the fish jump, and once a day seeing the seal swim by! One morning, a bald eagle perched across the river. The inlets are gorgeous to explore with kayaks, super mellow and magical!
There's plenty of space to spread out, nice furnishings, and I didn't realize how much I would appreciate having a dryer to freshen up our towels coming home from the beach!
Katie was accommodating and full of helpful recommendations - like picking up live lobsters nearby at a convenient store!!! We visited both Reid and Popham State Parks - thoroughly enjoyed both. Visiting Fort Popham was fun for all of us (adults and kids aged 10-14). History or boat buffs will LOVE the Maritime Museum in nearby Bath. The highlight of our trip was getting oysters & a shucking knife from the Five Islands Market, which spurred us to venture to Glidden Point oyster farm another day. We spent an afternoon in Wiscasset, and dined one night in Bath (No Coward Soul was awesome!) but our best meals were served at home with the spectacular view. Glad we planned ahead and came with plenty of meals planned.
Thank you for the hospitality!!!!
The Summer Home at Back River Bend was a beautiful spot for my family's reunion. We loved the dining/sunroom and deck at all times of the day. It is so beautiful and peaceful. We saw seals, herons and other wild life. Both Katie and Sam were very friendly and welcoming. When we called because we couldn't start the grill, they had someone there immediately to bring us a gas refill and make sure it was working.
Oh what a lovely spot - the cottage, the view, the proximity to everything, the owners' attention to detail. This location with its own dock made us wish we owned a boat. Renting the kayaks was nearly as nice as this is a perfect location for a paddle. Comfy beds, a "can do" kitchen, many places to read, watch tv or just sit and watch the water. The most relaxing vacation I've had in years.
We were very happy with The Summer House, particularly the location. On the Back River in a very private setting, we could not have been more content. The house was comfy with a very workable kitchen that was well stocked. The dining table in the sun room with an open view of the the deck, the river, the wildlife, and the few boats (mostly kayaks) was our favorite spot. Second was the deck. It only has direct sun in the a.m., so it was comfortable all day. We had kayaks for the week which made it such fun. We toured some: the state parks and beaches, the Bath Maritime Museum, etc. We also went to the Maine State Music Theatre in Brunswick which has outstanding productions. Ruth was most helpful, and responded quickly to our questions both before and while we were there. We highly recommend The Summer House!
We so very much enjoyed our Maine vacation !!!! The cottage was charming ,location so vey private, and the view was incredible !!!! So much to do -- or not !!!! Enjoyed shopping, whale watching, fishing and hiking !!! Hope to get back again soon !!! Thank you Sam and Ruth !
Had a great week at the summer house! Spent our week kayaking the river, watching deer and turkeys on the river banks around the house in the evenings , seeing the seals feeding and passing by in the mornings, catching striped bass off the dock and from the kayaks.Everything we were expecting, and much, much more! Thank you so much Sam and Ruth for the opertunity to stay at the summer house! It was a pleasure meeting you!!! The Koughs
Had a great time. Love the place and the whole area. very comfortable accomodation.

We, Sam and Ruth Francis, are the owners and hosts of eight rental properties in Georgetown, Maine. We have four wonderful grown sons and are proud grandparents. We worked for years to finish our timber frame dream home at the tip of the peninsula. We have past the property management part of the cottages to our son, Chris and his wife, Katie.
We purchased this unique fifty acre property with its half mile long peninsula over thirty years ago. Since then we have lived here and operated a traditional wooden boat shop. Over the years we have built six charming cottages, as well as, converted a Sailor's Loft to a rental with breathtaking, panoramic views. We also, offer the home that we first built and lived in to renters, with it's ideal location at the tip of the peninsula with deep water frontage and a private dock. We have added other touches to our property with a garden house, ten slip boat dock, a hiking trail and clearings for fishing and picnics.
The cottages are situated to allow privacy but also to maintain the quality of the open, natural spaces. Each cottage overlooks the marsh and adjacent Back River which flows off the mighty Kennebec River and nature conservancy land beyond.
