The Space

Accessed via a private driveway and perched on the hill, The Curlews looks out over the Teign estuary, across to Shaldon and Teignmouth. Stunning views of the ever-changing landscape are seen from every room.

The driveway comfortably fits five cars. There are steps leading up to the front door. Once inside, there are two downstairs bedrooms (one en suite with a glass shower and freestanding stone basin) with a large super king bed and a built-in wardrobe and the other with two fabric large bunk beds.

As you ascend the stairs, you enter an open gallery and a couple of steps into the large living and dining area, with high vaulted ceilings and an array of lighting that can be configured to suit your mood.

An attractive kitchen with breakfast island, full height integrated fridge, island freezer, dishwasher, tumble drier and washing machine and, of course, the all-important chiller for champagne. Prepare sumptuous meals on the induction hob while looking out to sea, watching the boats and Sunday morning rowers go by.

A dining area for 12 is just in front of the large patio with access to the tiled Terrace where you can dine al fresco, watching the tide as the barbecue sizzles.

Sit back and relax in the lounge with a 4K ultra-smart TV and integrated Freesat to watch your favourite shows. Or use the sunroom with glass walls giving you full views up and down the estuary with stunning views in the day or evening.

Underfloor intelligent heating through the lounge and kitchen-dining areas keeps you cosy in the cooler months.

The upper floor also has three further bedrooms:

The master has a super king bed, an en-suite wet room with mandarin stone sink and views across to Shaldon. Double doors open onto your glass Juliet balcony to let in the gentle sea breeze. There’s also an HD smart TV including Freesat and pre-loaded movies.

There are two further bedrooms to the side of the property. One is a queen side bed patio doors and direct access to the gardens and more scintillating estuary views. The second is a twin bedroom that can be made as a super king bed. This also has patio doors and direct access to the garden with estuary views.

The family bathroom on this level features an extra-large bath with fountain taps and overhead shower, and a mandarin stone basin.

The Garden

The mature gardens are set on various levels. There is an entertainment deck to enjoy the spectacular views of the River Teign and Dartmoor and one area that includes a fire pit. Guests can use the wood supplied at the bottom to the rear of the large barn style shed.

If you are feeling energetic, walk to the top of the garden and take in more-expansive views along the river to Dartmoor and its Tors on a clear day.

The Spa

A 10-person Hydropool Spa sits on a further deck overlooking the river covered with a nicely designed oak slatted pergola with plenty of outside luxury cushioned seating area with embedded led lighting in the flooring.

Housekeeping

All linen and towels are professionally cleaned and supplied. A professional cleaning company is also used to ensure that the property is thoroughly cleaned between guests.

Guest Access

The Neighbourhood

Teignmouth

Teignmouth is a stunning coastal town with historic Georgian buildings, long sandy beaches, and fresh local food. The town sits on the edge of the mouth of River Teign and the South Devon coast – and is surrounded by lush Devon countryside, so you won’t find a more beautiful setting for a holiday. Located on the main South West train line, Teignmouth is an easy journey from London, along the most spectacular coastal train route in the country. Dartmoor National Park, Exeter and Torquay are just a few miles from Teignmouth, making it an ideal central location to explore the rest of South Devon.

Things to do in Teignmouth

Teignmouth is the ideal family holiday destination – with a Victorian Pier, lido, play park, crazy golf and skate park all within easy reach of the beaches and town centre to keep the kids entertained.

Teignmouth beaches are great for family days out, Teignmouth Town beach is a long expanse of sand with the pier, arcades and promenade. Local watersports are also on offer if you want to try kayaking, coasteering or paddle boarding. Teignmouth River Beach is full of beautiful fishing boats and has a wonderful quaint village feel – perfect for coastal walks with the dog.

The town itself has beautiful Georgian buildings and a lovely high street for a bit of retail therapy. On the promenade, Teignmouth Pavilions hosts a regular cinema and child friendly events all year round. Teignmouth Arts Quarter is full of galleries, TAAG, Voyage Art, Reuben Lenkiewicz Art Gallery which sells and displays Robert Lenkiewicz‘a work. There are also the cafes, back beach and other stylish individual businesses.

Across the river is the quaint village of Shaldon which has beautiful views across to Teignmouth, and is home to the Ness and a smugglers tunnel cut through the South Devon cliffs.

Ideal for walking, Teignmouth is on the South West Coast Path, as well as at the end of the Templer Way, an 18 mile walking trail which traces the historic line of granite being taken from the quarries at Haytor on Dartmoor, to the docks at Teignmouth. The walk follows the Stover Canal, and is one of many scenic footpaths covering South Devon.

Eating Out

With the sea and the River Teign, Teignmouth is gaining reputation as a gourmet destination. Most of the local seafood will have been caught that morning – you can watch the boats come in at the River Beach landing their catches before it goes to the local restaurants.

The Taste of the Teign food trail gives visitors the chance to visit and taste the towns gastronomic delights –world renowned mussel and oyster beds, picking fresh berries to make your own jams, visiting the country’s steepest vineyard, and microbreweries making craft beers and real ales.

Top Events in Teignmouth

In March, the Classical Music Festival and the Poetry Festival host events, recitals and workshops around the town. The Folk Festival in June is one of the top festivals in the UK – a 3-day event where the town atmosphere is electric.

During the summer holidays there are carnivals and regattas in Teignmouth and Shaldon that the kids will love. In September there is the Taste of the Teign Food Festival, and in November, the town is alive with the local Jazz Festival.

History of Teignmouth

Teignmouth dates back to 1044, when the town was originally two separate villages. By the 1800s it was fashionable with tourists, and to this day remains a functioning harbour. If you want to explore the history of the area further, a visit to the Teign Heritage Centre is a must.

Shaldon

Situated on the South Devon coast across the Teign estuary and opposite the town of Teignmouth, Shaldon is an unspoilt village with a thriving community. Many families in the village are still linked to the fishing industry and with a great range of local shops and attractions; it’s an ideal place for a relaxing holiday. Shaldon isn’t as commercial as many of the South Devon towns, but is perfect if you want to experience real Devon life firsthand.

Things to do in Shaldon

Explore Shaldon Beach, ideal for swimming, sailing, rowing, paddling and rock pool exploring, or the nearby Teignmouth Beach or Ness Cove beach, accessed via an original Smugglers tunnel. If you want to try out some water sports – head to Teignmouth and visit Sea Sports South West who offer kayaking, stand up paddle boarding, sailing and more.

If you want to explore the local area but don’t want to take the car, you can travel to Teignmouth on the oldest passenger ferry in England, where there are various cafés, restaurants and bars, as well as traditional seaside entertainment to enjoy.

Shaldon is on the South West Coast Path, and there is a spectacular walk from Shaldon to Labrador Bay with views across the coastline – on a clear day you can see Lyme Bay.

To keep the kids entertained, try Shaldon Wildlife Trust zoo, Pitch and Putt, or take a trip up to Haldon Forest and Go Ape, or along to the English Riviera for Paignton Zoo, Living Coasts and Babbacombe Model Village.

Events in Shaldon

For a great party, Shaldon Water Carnival features what could be the oldest running regatta in the world. It’s a festival of watery fun and ideal for families – held on the first Saturday in August.

Shaldon Regatta is held every August with over 120 events for all the family – get involved in the water activities or just watch from the beach – either way you will love the festival atmosphere.

History of Shaldon

The original settlement was a little upstream, where the fertile valley was cultivated. Shaldon is built on reclaimed land from silt, and there is a retaining wall that prevents the sea from returning to the beaches. Gradually the inhabitants turned to fishing, although the village still has a very rural feel.

Getting Around

There is a bus stop directly at the bottom of the driveway with routes to Teignmouth and Shaldon (5 minutes), Dawlish, Starcross, Powderham and Exeter (45 minutes). Other routes also include Torquay (20 minutes), Paignton, Brixham and Newton Abbott.

There is also a train station in Teignmouth which is about a 20 minute walk from the property which is a beautiful journey to Exeter most of which has views over the Teignmouth estuary, Teignmouth and Dawlish seafront in addition to the River Exe.

Other Things to Note

Guests have full access to the 1 acre private grounds. No use of hot tub after 10pm. No use of outside areas after 11pm due to noise restrictions. There is parking for about 5 cars in front of the house on the driveway.

Lovely house for a family celebration

I rented this house to celebrate my 70th birthday with my family. There was plenty of space in the open plan living area with a large spa pool, enjoyed by all. The views were magnificent, the kitchen had everything we needed. If you stay here you need to be fairly fit as it is on a hillside with many speps, Some of which are very high. A price worth paying for such a lovely house.

Celebrating 25 years of friendship!

Wow- we cannot recommend this property enough! The house and grounds are spectacular but the view is even more breathtaking! Our party of 8 had the bank holiday weekend here, dining outside on our arrival then watching the sunset from the sun lounge. On Saturday we caught the train to Paignton to travel on the steam train then take a river cruise along the river Dart- just perfect! On our return, our friends had organised a private chef to come to the house, and the large open plan space was perfect for the occasion! Sunday was a lazy day, with a lovely walk to a local pub for Sunday lunch followed by a wonderful dip in the jacuzzi- even a little rain didn’t spoil it! If your looking for a luxurious space for a special occasion this is a definite contender!!

Beautiful property, stunning views

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit, great house, one thing to consider is the hill upto the property is very steep, then steep steps (could do with a handrail for us oldies) then more stairs to the living area, otherwise fantastic thankyou

50th Birthday

House was perfect for celebrating my husband’s 50th birthday - nicely decorated and fantastic open space living area. The beautiful views across the estuary topped it off. Only minor negatives were very steep steps to access the house and road noise but they didn’t detract from the stay

Very Enjoyable Stay.

We hired this house for a 70th birthday getaway. Lovely home, fabulous views, beautifully decorated. The drive to the house is extremely steep (our prearranged Ocado delivery couldn’t make it up the drive so it was all hands to the deck!) There are steep steps to access the house so not suitable for those with mobility issues. Disposal of waste and recycling is a bit of a faff and be prepared to strip the beds at the end of your stay but don’t let that put you off. We had a wonderful time enjoying the hot tub, engaging a chef (Boo To A Goose) who was extremely impressed with the kitchen facilities and the location for plenty of walking. All in all I thoroughly recommend it.

Lovely views

Curlews was a lovely house with stunning views across the estuary. Large hot tub was great and the children loved that. The entrance is via extremely steep steps so makes getting stuff in and out of the property hard work but worth it for the views!

Lovely home, picturesque views!

Beautiful home, plenty of space for all 10 of us staying at the property. Great outdoor space for bbq and lunch spots. Spa was lovely and relaxing with great views, maintenance was required with testing and chemicals. Rules on sound outside during the day time and no use of the spa after 10pm. Great home, the views really made the property so wonderful!

Great views and reading spots

A lovely property with amazing views and lovely armchairs just in the right spots to enjoy the view and read a book! Lots of room for a large family group with mixed ages. The hot tub was a real treat. We went to Coombe Cellars pub twice, would highly recommend it, about a 10 minute drive from the house and possibly the best sunday pub lunch I've had in a long time!

Beautiful home

The home was better than the photos. The views are absolutely spectacular. All of the rooms are great and very comfortable beds. Outside area is perfect. Perfect for a group! It was a 20-30 min walk to town, very easy, but also cheap taxis available. The only negative was there were a lot of rules to follow, particularly with the rubbish (have to sort it all in a very particular way and bring it to town). Otherwise such a nice home and a lovely weekend. We also loved the town! So cute, so many nice pubs and restaurants, nice casual beach town. Will definitely be returning

50th Birthday Weekend

This was a perfect place for me to stay with close friends to celebrate my 50th, it’s a stunning property with fantastic views and even with storm Dennis joining us for the weekend, it didn’t split it! The managers were always on hand to deal with any questions we had and were very friendly and accommodating. The location worked well and we enjoyed a walk across to Sheldon and visit all the pubs along the way, which were all worth a visit. We will hopefully all reunite there again in the future!

Beautifully situated holiday home, however, best designed for fit and able people

My family and I had a really enjoyable 5 day break at The Curlews. As we had 2 parents with us, 77 and 81, getting into and out of the property was a little testing as the steps are very steep. We were surprised when we arrived at The Curlews as, having read the visitors manual, with many dos and don’ts, the home wasn’t presented as we expected. Upon entering, there were marks up the wall, a bucket full of mucky water and mop on the patio ( which hadn’t been swept) cigarette buts and a McDonald lid lying around. The inside of the fridge needed a wipe round and there were items left in the freezer, when the manual states everything must be cleared. The foam rests and sides round the hot tub were mucky and needed to be cleaned and the BBQ and utensils had not been cleaned, as requested in the manual. Having said this, we thoroughly enjoyed our break, but when the manual threatens that failing a lot of the points mentioned that would result in the loss of deposit, we were surprised that the cleaners hadn’t seen to these points. Overall, fabulous property and ideal location to enable visits to many picturesque locations.
