Beyond our expectations
The photos of the beautiful Villa Mariam only begin to tell the story. The immaculate, luxurious home is both spacious and welcoming, providing tranquility, privacy, and activities for all ages. Our group of twelve (six adults, four young adults, and two children) rented the main house and never felt crowded whether we were enjoying a meal of local oysters around the generous table, sharing our memories of a day touring the many area sights in the comfortable living room, or enjoying a little friendly competition on one of the many game tables. The children and young adults in our group looked forward to a nightly swim in the splendid covered, heated pool, no matter the temperature or the weather outside. Several members of our party enjoyed cycling in the countryside thanks to the use of the bicycles provided. The charming proprietors greeted us warmly on our arrival and encouraged us to contact them with any concerns. When the weather turned chilly, we called and within 15 minutes the owner arrived to adjust the thermostat and give us additional space heaters just in case. They also provided us with information on area events happening that week, as well as maps and brochures on multiple local attractions. We had a wonderful time in La Rochelle visiting the beautiful ancient port city protected by 14th century towers, an expansive aquarium you enter through a jellyfish "tunnel," an impressive natural history museum, and the delightful Museé des Automates, a museum of antique automatons used primarily for window display advertising in the early 1900's. Outings to the nearby idyllic island of Ile de Ré (reached by a 2 mile long bridge) and its historic lighthouse and the relatively untouched Ile d'Aix were days we will long remember. And after a long day of sightseeing, Villa Mariam provided the perfect retreat to rest for the next day's adventures. Would we recommend you stay there? Without a doubt!
