This property was beautiful. It has everything needed to have a wonderful stay. I would suggest taking a taxi/cart to the location, as it is a long walk with luggage up stairs. Otherwise, the view is amazing!
This property is great for a large group. It's an old house with lots of character. Kitchen is updated enough to cook with ease. The view is by far one of the best on the island. Dinner on the deck is a must during your stay. The ONLY drawback for some will be the location. You need a golf cart if you are not inclined to take the public staircase. If you're a group who exercises, your stairclimb is worked into your day, of not, get a golfcart for your stay. The view and comfort for our large family was worth every step!
House was quirky and fun with lots of rooms for kiddos to explore! Great kitchen for cooking at home and a deck with a view you cannot beat! Highly recommended!
We love staying at this house, we spent the majority of our time on the deck enjoying the view. This house is perfect for family and friends, especially if you just want to hang out on the deck and enjoy the view. It would be even better if you had a golf cart since town is a bit far and there are a ton of stairs.
Even though the weather wasnât great, we were able to enjoy the large house and incredible view of the harbor and casino. I highly recommend this house for a large group. We come to Avalon every year and we definitely want to rent this house again.
We had a blast staying in this home which is definitely old and hasn't been updated. However, it is like stepping into the past which was SO COOL and inspired us to visit the casino and the museum to learn more about the history of the island. The only important thing to note is that the home is accessible by stairs and has lots of stairs inside, so make sure everyone staying here is comfortable with stair climbing!
We rented this home to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary with our immediate family. While at the house, we spent most of our time on the deck enjoying the stunning view. The kitchen was well-stocked, the beds and bathrooms were plentiful. A long staircase just down the street led directly into town, where we all found various activities to enjoy. A wonderful memory we'll all savor for a long time to come!
The place should have been aired out first before checking in. The damp, moldy smell was hard to deal with. If it is only a rental, removing the carpet would help. Also the bathroom amenities where insufficient. No shampoo/conditioner.
If you are willing to pay high dollar for a beautiful view of Catalina, this is your place; otherwise, way overpriced, kitchen is way under stocked with decent cooking utensils. Listed as a 4 bathroom, but never located the fourth bathroom. 29 steps down to master bedroom and very tiny master bathroom. I realize the house is 100 years old, very quaint and well-kept, but can be made a whole lot better with some upgrades, e,g, new mattresses, kitchen pots and pans, essentials like paper towels, foil, baggies, things that are usually staples in other VRBOs that we have rented. The view is amazing, yes, but that is exactly what you are paying for
First of all, the view is fantastic. It's even prettier in person. We liked the layout of the house (except we didn't like the room with the bunk beds because it was dank and unwelcoming). The decks are spacious and probably the best feature.
We took a taxi from the shore but walked to town for the rest of the stay by using the stairs. The stairs are up the hill a few houses away (with the metal handrail next to a hydrant if you are interested).
The house is well furnished. However, the mattresses in the top bedroom were hard and of poor quality. The guests in the other rooms with the full beds had no complaints.
What did surprise us was the home was not well stocked. For example, there was a partial roll of paper towels and no replacement. There were two dish towels for a week long stay. There were small soaps in the bathroom and shampoo that was smaller than travel size. Sample size at best. The home sleeps 10 and we had six. It's a good thing we all brought our own shampoo and conditioner and soap. It was just unexpected given the cost and the number of people who can stay not to have basic shampoo and soap that would last more than a day.
Other than that, it is quiet, serene and beautiful.
You are paying for the views when you stay at this property. I think that is evident from the photos. It is about a mile uphill to walk from the ferry. Once there we located the approximately 160 steps that lead down to the city park. This made getting in and out of town easier. If you are coming from the ferry, go to the city park located next to the gulf cart rental and begin walking up those steps. At the top of the park steps, look to the right and you will see a staircase that leads up the hill. At the top of the stairs go right and walk a few houses down to 172. When we arrived, the house smelled very musty. Keep in mind the house is 100. The top deck is in direct sun in the late afternoon through dinner time and it as well as the top floor are extremely hot during this time even with windows (that donât have screens) open. There is no a/c. The wall to wall carpets in the house are old and dirty and should be replaced (preferably with wood or tile to make it easier to keep clean) or deep cleaned. The bathrooms are dated but functional and definitely large enough. The bedrooms are good size. The bunk bed bedroom is not truly a bedroom. It has no outside windows or closet and is more musty than the rest of the house. My kids woke up with puffy eyes and headaches from sleeping in that room. All of the bedrooms could use a refresh in terms of mattresses and bedding. The bedding appeared to be older. The kitchen is large, fully functional & well stocked. We had a nice stay.
This weekend laughing, playing and loving was exactly what was missing for us, our two sons and their families. We lived on the balcony with its magical view while having our coffee and meals. This home was comfortable, relaxing and met our needs perfectly. Everyone wants to come back :).
This was our second year at this property and itâs very nice. We are a group of senior professional and retired ladies and this house works well for us.
The balcony views were great - unfortunately that was the only expectation met. This older house has not been updated or upkept very well. Good luck getting hot water to the bottom level and the beds are exceptionally bad. Would definitely go for something newer or closer to town.
This is the second summer that I rented this property. Since I was a young girl in the early 50âs my parents brought my brother and I for a week in Avalon. We loved everything about it. From the big ship SS Catalina, speedboats coming out to great the ship and the big circle of people welcoming us with Duke leading the fun.
My husband and I brought our children each summer for a week and now that I have grandchildren I bring them and their parents. I just turned 80 and hope there are some more memories to be made.
The house was beautiful with beautiful views from the balcony, except the way to get up to the house was a a-lot of challenges, need a ride to and from, costly.
However if we were told about an easier way to and from a short cut down from the left side through the stairs from the neighbors would be very nice. But we didnât find out until the last day.
The beds were cheap and uncomfortable could be updated for the price cost per night.
For us ladies, we need a hair blow dryer, which there were none in the house. It was very inconvenience for us.
We had a good time stayed in the island.
