We had a fabulous week staying at Joe House. The cottage is very comfortable and well equipped. We were able to walk straight from the door and did several of the local walks. We were lucky to stay during lambing season and loved seeing the baby lambs. Information on how the cottage was renovated by the present owners was really interesting and informative.
Lovely cottage, for a couple or family up to 5. Big kitchen and relatively small living room. Neighbours are farmers: tractor noises and barking dog now and then. Little terrace outside. The Dales all around you.
Joehouse
Gunnerside would not be our choice of location next time. Beautiful but only one pub and need to be sure you have all you because itâs a drive for supplies.
House was just as described. Well equipped kitchen, comfortable beds. We really enjoyed watching the sheep from the farm next door. Great walks right down our own lane. Day trips to Richmond and Windemere in the Lake District. Owner very easy to work with and great communication and checkin process was very easy. Loved our time here.
Sarah
Lovely little cottage nestled in the quiet Gunnerside hills. Walks from the door especially Gunnerside Gill very picturesque.
Cottage was warm and welcoming, log burner was nice to come back to after a hard days walking.
Plenty of space, large kitchen, everything we needed and large bedrooms and bathroom (nice to be able to have a bath, not just a shower!)
All you can hear at night is the Owl's Hooting and hardly any if at all light pollution.
A great little find when you need to get away from it all!
Joe House is a lovely cottage, well equipped and tastefully done. Our girls loved the swing outside although it needs to be reset as it was quite wobbly and about to pull out of ground completely.
It's a very cozy place and we enjoyed our stay. The stairs are very steep. Our four year olds feel a couple of times but we're fine.
All in all a great stay. Thanks.
What a wonderful cottage set in the hills over Gunnerside.
Cosy, comfy bed and a bath for after all the long hikes!
The birds and pheasant visited every day and lots and lots of baby lambs!!!
From communication at the start to arriving all went smoothly.
Lots of walking maps and info In the cottage and we used a couple of these for some fantastic hikes.
Parkin cake was a lovely touch and the fire was lovely In the chillier evenings. Although during the day was pretty much shorts and t shirts . Stunning weather!
If you get the chance go to Gordale scar and scramble up the waterfall! Def my highlight!
Needs a little TLC but also it's been locked up for a while with covid. We were not disappointed with anything.
Plenty of pots and pans and crockery.
Driveway down to house is little tricky so just take it easy.
Would love to visit again...area is amazing and house is great to come home too after a long day!!
We fell in love with Joe House and The Yorkshire Dales
We don't tend to return to the same place, but we feel we will have to make an exception here :) Sarah has been the most welcoming and helpful host from the moment we booked. Myself, my husband and our toddler felt so at home here and are really sad to be leaving - we stayed 6 nights but could definately have stayed longer - Yorkshire Dales has so much beauty to offer and being able to come home to Joe House at the end of each day made it extra special! Thank you for everything Sarah, we had such a blissful autumnal break.
Lovely comfortable beds, with a fine collection of books and DVDs, all the facilities you need in the kitchen too.
Hope you don't mind a couple of negative comments, while we had great weather the exhaust from the boiler faces out onto seating area of the patio, would be good to pipe it up higher, also if the patio was leveled out a bit, this would help with the outside seating.
Had a great stay thank you.
Joe House is in the heart of the beautiful Yorkshire Dales. If you like to hike, visit quaint villages, enjoy local pubs or tearooms, and experience the country for a few days or more, this is the place for you! The house has everything you need, and the sheep, pheasants, birds, and rabbits right outside your windows are fun to watch and hear. Just know that driving in The Dales can be an adventure, and bring your slippers for the slate floor and rustic stairs in the house.
What a wonderful cottage and location. The cottage has some interesting history so worth reading the contents of the folder. Also, the welcome message and cake was a lovely touch!
Thank you, Sarah!
Exactly what we needed for our short getaway break of 3 nights
Cosy ,clean ,well equipped cottage which served us well as a base for exploring all that the dales has to offer.
Plenty of walking, fresh air days and cosy log burner evenings.
(Hot baths and red wine optional!) Refreshed Thank you.
Sarah and Gordon have been the proud owners of Joe House for the past 10 years during which time we have lovingly restored this beautiful property. Much of the work has been done ourselves, with Gordon learning the skills of lime plastering amongst others. When more technical skills were required we have used the great local craftsmen of Swaledale - who have never let us down! We live in West Yorkshire with our daughter, Ella who loves the cottage, especially the park in Reeth and throwing stones into the river Swale. We hope people will fall in love with both Swaledale and Joe House as we did - it is a stunning location.
We have always loved Swaledale - it is a very special place. Joe House allows us to enjoy the area from a fabulous location with all the comforts of home but surrounded by the true character of the Dales. We visit Joe House regularly with our family and friends and so we make sure it is equipped with everything we might need for our stay - which means it will be perfect for you too. We have a high proportion of repeat guests, who continually tell us how wonderful Joe House is and has become to them and their families.
Joe House is a unique property which has foundations dating from the 15th century but includes refurbishment done through the centuries, including plenty of Victorian character - anyone with an interest in the architecture of the Dales will find plenty to talk about. The refurbishment work we have done and the furnishings give a perfect mix of old and new - so you can feel the character but enjoy the comfort of modern facilities. We have filled the house with books and maps to help you explore the area, as well as toys for the kids when you want to stay nearby. We are also happy to give guidance on local walks and attractions to help you plan your stay. It is perfectly located in a secluded spot but gives great access to other areas in the Dales and is walkable to the local pub (the pub is reopening on 8th Nov 2019) - the local pubs in Muker and Low Row are also fantastic & approx 3 miles away.
