We had a wonderful time and the location could not have been more picturesque. It was walking distance to several beautiful beaches and a short drive to restaurants and shops. We loved it!
best possible place to stay. Hale O Honu is absolutely unique. The house is outfitted with everything youâll need. Thereâs plenty of extra snorkel masks, fins, and shoes. We spent mornings swimming and snorkeling, mid day touring the island or hiking, then great evenings at home watching the sunsets before tribal council. Most mornings there were sea turtles on the beach sunning in the back yard. I cannot recommend highly enough. Location, location, location.
Absolutely fantastic property. The oceanfront location, sunset views & whale watching are second to none compared to anywhere I have ever stayed. We rent in Maui each winter and I will be coming back here. We have always rented condos in the past and having an oceanfront lawn for the kids as well as a driveway for parking and a garage for keeping strollers, suitcases, etc. was a massive positive. My kids are 3 & 1 and this was a perfect setup for our family. The kitchen is bigger than the photos look and there is a spare bar fridge as well. The table out by the water is amazing for lunch and after the kids go to bed. There is a 6 person kitchen table as well which is better for dinner since we are mostly eating around sunset and it gets dark quick. great family property!
Our family had an amazing stay at this superb property in Makena. Secluded and private yet a short drive to amazing restaurants and shopping. We saw sea turtles every day and snorkeled in the clear water off the back yard. Truly a gem and a perfect family vacation!
Great Stay at a Wonderful Location, Slightly Dated but Very Pleasant
My family (parents, siblings, self) stayed here for almost 10 days and very much enjoyed it. The location of this property is amazing - right by the water, a short walk from great beaches - and there is a nice layout for spending time together inside and outside. Two things of potential concern for guests - 1) the home smelled slightly of mold, totally expected from a house that was built decades ago on a tropical island and less than 100 feet from the ocean. Be warned, and if you have allergies to that (we didn't) you may want to look elsewhere. 2) The twin beds in the 3rd bedroom are regular sized, and since my family members and I are all above 6 ft tall we did suffer a little sleeping on them. Overall would absolutely stay here again - the owners were great to communicate with and this was a special place to stay.
Makena Makai is a beautiful, quaint home with views that won't disappoint. I enjoyed snorkeling with the turtles each morning. The owner/manager's are easy to speak with. We had no issues throughout our entire stay. (November 16-23, 2024) I would love another opportunity to stay at this wonderful place. â€ïž
Peace, quiet and amazing sunsets in beautiful Makena
Our family of 6 loved our week at Clark and Sue's house in Makena. The location could not be better and we were truly able to unwind and feel at peace. We watched whales everyday. We snorkeled right in front of the house or at the beach just up the road. We walked down to Maluaka beach at sunset. Every other day we did an excursion, but always looked forward to coming back to the house to relax. We cooked a few dinners and lots of breakfasts in the very well-stocked kitchen...wish we had cooked more dinners there! We loved hanging out on the patio at night with only the tiki torches to give us light. It was magical. Highly recommend!
I have been to Maui several times and have always enjoyed my stay at the resorts, so this was the 1st time at a home and it did not disappoint! Incredible location in the heart of turtle town and the house was simply stunning in its ambiance and proximity to the best snorkeling around, PERIOD!!! Loved Sue and the commutation.
Beautiful property in a perfect location. Whether as a launching point to see all the sights of Maui or a spot to just sit and relax, this home is perfect. Beautifully maintained with attentive management, we couldn't recommend this home any more.
A wonderful place to relax and enjoy Maui! The atmosphere and views are so special. The owners provide history of the property and location which provides interest context to appreciate the place. Hope to return in the future.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay! There are snorkels, fins and water shoes available for use right out the back door. We saw the turtles every morning and enjoyed the sunset over the ocean from the back yard every evening. The location is private but close to shopping and restaurants. I highly recommend this property.
If yâall are looking for a shiny new place - this isnât it. If you want an epic location on the water in Turtle Town - this is the spot. We sat for 2 weeks in the backyard and enjoyed the âprivateâ Bay. Cute old home.
The wonderful loavation and access to the ocean cannot be better!
Love it! All great! This is the second time weâve stayed here and itâs the perfect place to make memories: great family meals prepared in the kitchen with a view, snorkeling, kayaking, sunset revelries, peaceful evenings when all that is heard are the ocean, crickets, and starlight.
The location and view are second to none. The house has some minor maintenance issues due to its age, but those did not significantly affect our enjoyable time in Maui.
Our family had a wonderful stay at Sue and Clarkâs home. We have stayed in the area before but our family has grown and we needed a bigger oceanfront vacation spot. This was a quiet place with literally the best snorkeling and paddling on the island, we are so grateful for the experience. Weâd love to come back & Sue was very easy to work with. Mahalo!
What a beautiful home and beautiful location. I love this part of Maui, and to top it off, finally got a chance to stay in a quiet neighborhood tucked away from the busy-ness of the rest of the island. The house itself was super spacious and accommodated our group of 6 really well. Kitchen was nice and big and the drink bar was also a huge hit with the guests. A beautiful beach just a few minutes walk away. Thanks again Sue and Clark - we can't wait to come back!
Stunning location, responsive hosts and property manager
Our family truly enjoyed our stay and would gladly return if ever staying in Makena again.
The home was so welcoming that we barely had any reason to leave. We spent most of our days enjoying the views, spotting sea turtles and whales, and walking a few minutes down the road to the nearest beach. Other great spots are just 5-15 minutes away. Stuck on an earlier time zone, we got in the habit of rising before dawn to sip coffee/tea and watch the stars and planets, which was quite nice. The overall atmosphere is incredibly picturesque, to the point of being poetic, and zen.
The home itself is not an austere, modern, slick home, more of a homy home, showing its age in some parts, but this was fine for us, and convenient in fact as we were able to borrow beach toys for the kids, pots/pans etc for cooking a few meals during our stay, and otherwise feel at home. It's clear this was a well-lived and well-loved family home and it was nice to learn about some if its and the family's history and connection to the surrounding area in the home guide book.
Both Clark & Sue and the property manager were very responsive and helpful, and the property manager accommodated us checking in an hour early when we unexpectedly found ourselves arriving early.
We and family have been several times in Mui, but this place is the best by far.
It is all about location, location, location.
It has everything you can dream about in a great vacation: hammock, grill, outside table etc.
Access to the beach right in the back yard with amazing snorkeling with turtles everyday. A place that snorkelers are paying to travel with boats all day.
Close to a nice mall and beaches, some in walking distance.
We told all our friends and they are planning to rent the same place as well as we are are planning future visits again.
Awesome loved it and can not wait to come back!
My family of six adults spent a week at Makena Makai. There were lots of positives about our stay. The setting is gorgeous. We enjoyed a number of dinners on and gorgeous sunsets from the patio. There was plenty of room for six people and the house was well stocked with beach equipment and kitchen condiments. It was awesome to have an outdoor shower to use after snorkeling with the turtles in the water right by the house. We enjoyed mangoes from the front yard tree. A few things could be upgraded/fixed, but didnât interfere with our enjoyment of our stay.
We have travel to Maui about 30 times before discovering this gem located in such an idyllic setting!!! Our grandchildren loved discovering the tide pools and snorkeling right from the bay in front of the house. Located near an old stone church and great beach for wave hopping it is in a quiet neighborhood. This house offers privacy along a street that is perfect to walk or run along. Inside you have 3 beds and 3 bathes. The kitchen overlooks the spacious view of the ocean. Enjoy meals on your deck while watching the sunset. You are right on the ocean. We will stay here every time we come to Maui and recommend it to everyone we can!!!!
Excellent location on the waterfront providing views of whales and turtles. Easy walk to Sandy beach (swam with turtles here!) and the rock outcrop in front of property provided opportunities to see turtles and fish up close.
It seemed a slower part of Maui compared to the resorts of Wailea and Maui itself was wonderful with the Majestic Haleakala towering over us all the time.
Road to Hana to see the waterfalls was excellent as was the whale watching out of Lahaina and the blow hole in the north of West Maui was spectacular.
We had a 2 week get together for 3 siblings and partners as a 60th birthday celebration and all hope that we can come back sometime soon.
Our host, Sue, was responsive and gave us some tips as well!
Thoroughly recommend this property for a relaxed break from the rush of life at home.
My parents built this home in 1969, when the only access was a dirt road. They lived here year round, but had no mail or paper delivery for many years. Its a lovely, quiet location in a pristine area, which my husband and I regularly update, and keep decorated in the Hawaiian style.
Snorkeling, turtle and whale viewing (in winter months) is awesome from our location. We can also swim off the left front side of our property. Our oceanfront location with sunset views overlooking 3 islands and 2 peninsulas is truly unparalleled.
