Summary:
White water rolls past the commons below this Phil Bradley-designed Sea Ranch home, built by Harold Halvorsen on a natural rock outcropping near Pebble Beach. Three bedrooms sleep 6 — two queens and a twin bunk room — under wood walls and vaulted ceilings, with a handmade quilt on every bed and a wood stove for foggy evenings. Decks on both sides of the house, a washer and dryer, and room for two dogs. The south rec center pool is a 10-minute walk; Pebble Beach is under 15; Gualala is 10 minutes north.
The Space:
The first thing you notice is the wood: walls that climb to vaulted ceilings, warm even on a gray morning. Then you notice the window, and the white water working the rocks below the commons, and the room goes quiet.
Phil Bradley designed this house and Harold Halvorsen built it, on a natural rock outcropping near Pebble Beach, in the Sea Ranch tradition of letting the land lead. The owners have kept that spirit. Antiques and Americana fill the rooms, and a handmade quilt waits on every bed. Reviewers call it a characterful home, and that is the right word.
Decks run along both sides of the house, so you can follow the sun or get out of the wind. Coffee goes out to the ocean-facing deck in the morning; dinner can move to the sheltered side when the breeze comes up. A small landscaped yard gives the dogs somewhere to sniff between walks.
KITCHEN & DINING
The kitchen is fully equipped for a week of real cooking — dishwasher, microwave, oven and stove, coffee maker, blender, toaster — with a dining table sized for six. A washer and dryer are in the house, which matters when the dogs come back from the beach.
SLEEPING ARRANGEMENTS
Three bedrooms sleep 6. Two bedrooms have queen beds; the third has twin bunk beds that kids claim on sight. Two full bathrooms. Bed linens and towels are provided.
GETTING IN
The main entry is up a flight of stairs alongside the garage. If stairs are a concern, the path around the house leads to the back deck and a level way in. Parking is in the driveway.
OUT THE DOOR
The south recreation center — heated pool, hot tub, sauna — is a 10-minute walk. The Pebble Beach access trail is 14 minutes on foot, and Black Point's headland trails are 2 minutes by car. Harbor seals haul out at Green Cove, 2 miles away. Gualala's groceries, galleries, and restaurants are 9 miles north on Highway 1, and Shell Beach's tide pools are a 4-mile drive south along the coast.

Guest Access:
The whole house is yours — every room, both decks, the yard. Park in the driveway. The main entry is up a flight of stairs alongside the garage; if stairs are a problem, walk around to the back deck for a level way in. Your door code and check-in details arrive before you do. Your Sea Ranch recreation pass — pools, saunas, tennis — is provided with the stay.
The Neighborhood:
The Sea Ranch runs 10 miles along the Sonoma Coast, and from this house the first bluff walk is a short one. The south recreation center — heated pool, hot tub, sauna — is a 10-minute walk. The Pebble Beach access trail is 14 minutes on foot; Black Point's headland trails are 2 minutes by car. Harbor seals haul out at Green Cove, 2 miles away, and Shell Beach's tide pools are 4. Gualala — groceries, galleries, restaurants, the Gualala Arts Center — is 9 miles north on Highway 1, about 10 minutes. Annapolis Winery is less than 10 miles inland, and Salt Point State Park is 20 minutes south for tide pools and the pygmy forest.
Getting Around:
From San Francisco it is about 2.5 hours: Highway 101 north, then Highway 1 up the coast. Build the coast drive into the day; it is the best part of the trip. The nearest airport is Charles M. Schulz–Sonoma County (STS) in Santa Rosa, about 1.5 hours east. Rent a car there. You will want one on the coast.
Other Things to Note:
Three Sea Ranch rec centers have heated pools, saunas, and tennis courts; your rec pass is provided. They are shared, so on a holiday weekend the pool can be busy.
Exterior lighting is minimal on purpose — Sea Ranch protects its dark sky. Bring a flashlight for evening walks, then look up. On a clear night the Milky Way is the show.
Gray whales pass December through April; grab the binoculars and watch for spouts from the window. April through June the meadows go to lupine, poppies, and iris. Summer brings the warmest days and longest light, and a morning fog that usually lifts by midday.
Up to 2 dogs are welcome. Keep them leashed on the trails and pick up after them — the harbor seals and the neighbors thank you.
Cell service is patchy along the coast. The house has WiFi.
