Other Details
Austin's vibe shines brightest outdoors, especially in October when the weather is mild (highs around 80°F/27°C) and the fall colors start popping. Since you're hitting Austin
For family members not attending the races, lean into that green space:
Hike or Paddle Lady Bird Lake: Rent a kayak or stand-up paddleboard from rowers like owing Dock (about $20/hour) for skyline views. The 10-mile Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail loops around—perfect for a post-festival recovery stroll. Bonus: Watch the Congress Avenue Bridge bats emerge at dusk (free, nightly from March through October).
Swim Barton Springs Pool: This natural spring-fed pool stays a crisp 68°F year-round. It's $5–9 entry, and the adjacent Zilker Park where the music festival is, has botanical gardens and mini-train rides if you're with family.
Day Trip to Texas Hill Country: Drive 30–45 minutes to Enchanted Rock State Natural Area for a moderate hike up a massive pink granite dome (entry ~$8/vehicle). Or hit Hamilton Pool Preserve for waterfall swims (reservations required, $15/person).
Music & Nightlife
Austin's "Live Music Capital" status means options galore, even during festival overload:
Catch Shows on 6th Street or Rainey Street: Dive into dive bars like The Continental Club for blues/rock or Antone's for soul. Rainey Street's bungalow bars (e.g., Banger's Sausage House) mix craft beer with live sets—think $10–15 cover.
Bluegrass or Folk at C-Boy's Heart & Soul: A cozy spot for intimate gigs; check for acts like the Peterson Brothers.
Free Outdoor Concerts: Keep an eye on the Long Center for the Performing Arts' free summer-to-fall series spilling into October, often with skyline backdrops.
Food & Drink Scene
Texan flavors are a must—October means prime brisket weather and food truck festivals.
Austin is a wonderful place to visit. Besides the music at Austin City Limits, here are a few fun things to do and see: BBQ Crawl: Hit Franklin Barbecue (arrive early, lines are legendary) or La Barbecue for smoked meats (~$20/plate). For variety, try Micklethwait Craft Meats trailer.
Tacos & Tex-Mex: Torchy's Tacos for quirky options like trailer park tacos, or Veracruz All Natural for migas tacos with fresh migas (~$10–15).
Food Truck Parks: South Congress has hotspots like The Picnic for global eats; pair with a flight at Austin Beerworks.
Breweries & Distilleries: Tour Jester King Brewery in Dripping Springs for farmhouse ales, or Treaty Oak for gin tastings amid pecan trees.
History & Culture
Balance the festival energy with some Austin roots:
Texas State Capitol Tour: Free guided tours of this pink granite beauty—climb the dome for city views. Nearby, the Bullock Texas State History Museum ($13) has IMAX films on Texas lore.
LBJ Presidential Library: On UT's campus, dive into '60s history with exhibits on civil rights ($13, includes grounds).
Street Art Walk on South Congress: Snap pics with "I Love You So Much" mural, then shop quirky boutiques like Allens Boots.
Austin during Formula One weekened, gets packed, so book Ubers and sight seeing ventures early and use CapMetro buses for easy access. Since this unit is central to downtown Austin, you're only steps from 6th Street action. What's your group's vibe—foodie, hiker, or music chaser? The list is endless in this college town.
