Tropical Rain Forest Getaway at Christmas Time
The road leading to the property is a series of single lane, mostly paved roads, where you may have to pull to the side to allow oncoming traffic to pass you. We probably didn't need a 4 wheel drive jeep, but we were glad to have it when it rained hard and created deeper puddles on the roadways.
When we first arrived, it was raining and after dark (9 pm) so we had some trouble unlocking the front gate at first because it was hard to see. As advertised there was a dry parking area beneath the house which we were thankful for, we also noted this area included a washing machine/dryer combo for clothes and linens.
The stairway up to the 2nd story living quarters was a bit tricky in the dark and we highly recommend you bring a flashlight and umbrella to navigate safely, especially in the dark and rainy conditions we had when we first arrived.
Also be prepared for many trips up and down the stairs if you bring much luggage and/or food/beverage supplies with you,
Our first impression upon entering this house was that it was a beautifully designed layout. The interior was a bit dampish and cold when we first entered but this was probably due to most of the windows being left open before we arrived. There is no central heat or a/c so your main options for warmth are a cast iron fireplace/stove (purchase easy light fireplace logs in advance if you plan to use this option) and there is an electric fireplace in the master bedroom as well as a heated mattress pad for that bed with dual controls if needed. The gas stove also helped heat the living space up once we started using that to cook with.
The kitchen was fairly well supplied with various cooking supplies, pots, pans, utensils, etc., but you will want to bring along zip lock baggies or disposable containers to store any leftovers.
This house uses a rain catchment system to supply the home with water so you'll need to be judicious in its use. Plenty of placards around the home will remind you. We brought bottled water to drink and a large supply of food items to make use of the kitchen.
Our first impressions upon awaking in the morning was how bright the house was! There are no curtains or blinds on any of the windows, so when the sun rises, you'll know it! Thankfully the house is almost completely surrounded with dense, lush tropical foliage, mostly large tree ferns, so we didn't feel overly exposed to the neighbors line of sight.
Overall our stay was very enjoyable and we'd return again!
Enjoyable stay in the rainforest
One of the best parts of our trip to Volcano is our stay here. Very convenient to the national park (7 minutes) and Volcano restaurants, including delicious Thai takeout at Thai Thai. Everything was well thought out and taken care of. We enjoyed the heating pad on the bed during the cool nights, as well as the fully stocked kitchen and abundance of windows. It really felt like we were in the jungle. Make sure you step outside on a clear night and star gaze!
