First, I'll touch on the high points. We booked this house for our annual sister trip for the deck, and that did not disappoint! The hot tub was very nice, although the back jets didn't come on and the owner didn't know how they worked as the tub was new. There were nice fresh flowers on the table. We prepared a few meals in the kitchen, which is serviceable. If you plan on having meat, you might want to bring knives (if you're driving). I have to be honest, the house (and neighborhood) looks shabby. It badly needs a deep cleaning and facelift/refresh. It just felt dirty to us, from the doors to the kitchen floor/fridge to the space at the river that we ventured 118 steps down to and never went back. Exterior walls were moldy, wood rotting down by the hot tub, and the neighboring houses looked the same. We aren't super picky, but it bothered us--if you want a pristine and upscale place or have OCD, keep looking. The beds are very firm. I slept on the couch the last night. I'm used to a softer bed and had bad sleep; my sister said hers was fine. I suggest bringing ear plugs (barking dog) and an eyemask, as the house faces east and the rooms have thin curtains. And a bluetooth speaker to cover the neighbors' noise whilst out on the deck. It was nice to hear the waves lapping at the shore and the crickets at night. Get pizza at Mille Luci and burgers at Horsefeathers in Tarrytown! Check out the King Spa in Palisades for a Korean spa experience. Avoid Sparky's Diner.
Loved this place. Quiet street along the west shore of the mighty Hudson south of Haverstraw. Two bedrooms upstairs have stellar views of the river. The star of the house is the east facing deck outside. Had several meals on the deck and entertained some family there in the afternoons. Lots of blue jays and other bird kept us company.
Place could use a deep cleaning. Cupboards were a little dusty. Parking is a little tight but generally OK. Overall, a great place to stay. Iâd love to come back.
The view of the Hudson (from many areas of the home, including the nice deck) is beautiful. It was obvious that a lot of love has gone into this home . It was comfortable and accommodating, having both up and downstairs sitting areas, and everything we needed. The hostess was very responsive.
The house sits in a small Haverstraw neighborhood called Dutch Town. The street ends in a beautiful bike/hike path along the Hutson River. We spent a lot of time on the deck with an amazing view of the river and boat traffic. The inside of the house is very comfortable and you can tell much about the owner's travels around the world from the interesting items that adorn the house. We learned a lot about the history of Haverstraw and sculpter James Tyler by visiting the Haverstraw Brick Museum. All in all, we enjoyed a pleasant and peaceful four days.
We enjoyed our stay very much. Everything was spot on with the description of the property. The host was very responsive with questions even though she was on the other side of the world vacationing. The property is beautiful and well lit with a cool walk down to the water and a hot tub in the middle of nature. The deck is beautiful. We hung out there a lot and watched great sunsets and sunrises. Thereâs lots of privacy.
I enjoyed very much all the artwork, plants and many books in the home. It was very cozy and comfortable to stay in on a rainy day. We liked walking to the end of the street to the park in the mornings. I would definitely stay here again.
The home was very comfortable and was a pleasant stay. We stayed for 10 days, and it had all the amenities you would need for an extended vacation. Enjoyed the view from the deck, the hot tub and beach. The place is a great spot if you are wanting to go into New York City. There is a trail right down the street which is great for running and biking. We would stay there again when visiting New York.
We enjoyed our stay here- it was an eclectic house with lots to do. There were a few negatives, the house was close to the quarry (which smelled), the hot tub jets were weak, and we got bit up like crazy by something despite wearing bug spray, we think mites (possibly from hanging out on the deck at night?). But we felt like the house was fun and recommend it if you don't mind the negatives I mentioned. We did everything from canoeing in the Hudson, walking on the nearby trail, using the hot tub, cooking, and hanging on the deck. All the things we needed to stay for a week were there in the house. We loved the peach tree and the fresh herb garden too, its not too often you stay at VRBOs that have fresh/live plants.
The surrounding area is nothing to write home about, but the hot tub and views of the Hudson were why we booked, and that's exactly what we got. The host was lovely, and the property was very clean when we arrived. There are a lot of stairs, including down to the hot tub, so that's something to be aware of before booking. This location was a good hub for local day trips to Westchester County, Tarrytown, Stony Point Battlefield, Legoland, and Bear Mountain State Park. Harriman State Park is also nearby, as are the Nyacks and the Palisades Mall. The full kitchen had a full size refrigerator and freezer, and I'm really happy there was a dishwasher, as we ended up using lots of mugs sipping tea and looking out over the Hudson.
Just an excellent place. Very nicely laid out. Joan was very responsive. The art at the house was nice. The view of the river from the back deck is spectacular. We would definitely come back!
The home was well equipped with everything you would need to make your stay comfortable. The deck with the river view was our favorite place to sit enjoying coffee or a glass of wine. Nyack was very close by with shops and restaurants to enjoy.
The views from this property take your breath away. We really enjoyed sitting out on the back deck and watching the boats go by on the Hudson. It is close enough to New York City that we were able to take a few day trips. The hot tub was great at night under the stars but also nice in the morning as the sun rose. The hot tub is a flight of stairs down from the main deck. There are quite a few stairs to get down to the water area so be prepared to get a work out if you want to dip your toes in the river. The kids enjoyed playing by the water the most. The fire pit is by the water but we did not use it as it was too warm the week we stayed and we also didn't feel like dragging the supplies down. There is also a nature trail for walking or biking right down the street. We were a little surprised that there was an adjoining unit but it was still very private. We rarely saw anyone. I would recommend using open windows and the whole house fan at night instead of the air conditioner. It cooled the house off nicely with breezy fresh air. Our only complaint was the coffee maker was not automatic. We had to boil water and pour it into a filter over a coffee pot which is not convenient for avid coffee drinkers.
Joan was an amazing host and very responsive. The home is in a beautiful location and has everything youâll need for your stay! Loved the hot tub in the evening while looking over the water. Highly recommend!
The River House is a unique heavenly retreat. The view was perfect, bed so comfortable with the Hudson outside the window and the home and location had everything we needed.
We felt so peaceful and happy being there. We will return!
Breathtaking views of the Hudson! Charming and beautiful home with phenomenal vistas from blissful bedrooms, incredible deck, Hot Tub and patio. An oasis with gorgeous flowers and trees. Wonderful fully stocked kitchen, comfy living room. Steps away from 5 mi. biking/hiking trail along river to Nyack. This home is a knock-out! Owner is a pleasure to work with. We can't wait to return!
The RiverHouse was exactly what we needed- an escape from the city that was only a short distance away from the city, yet felt like we had been transported to a whole new place world. The house is cozy and homey, right on the Hudson so you get amazing views from every room. The kitchen had all the accoutrements we needed to cook up some nice meals all weekend, from pots and pans to spices. The hot tub was awesome (and still turned on although itâs mid-winter) and looks over the Hudson.
We actually never left the house after getting groceries, so I canât speak to the town itself but the house is definitely in a safe and quaint neighborhood.
Rent this home if youâre looking for a relaxing weekend, access to nature and some peace and quiet.
Warning: there are a lot of stairs around the house/down to the hot tub and river so this isnât the perfect fit for someone less mobile!
Our family very much enjoyed our stay at Joan's place. The view of the Hudson was so beautiful. We hiked down to the rocky shore and watched the lights come up from the deck. A great stay
We had an amazing time. The view is lovely. The hot tub and fire pit were perfect for a relaxing weekend away from NYC. There is a hiking trail just down the street. Joan is awesome. She was available through text if we needed anything. We will be back.
Ein tolles Haus, absolut ruhig mit atemberaubendem Blick auf den Hudson und trotzdem ist man schnell und easy in NYC. Das Haus bietet alles was man braucht incl. Gasgrill. Sehr angenehme und unkomplizierte Vermieterin. Jederzeit wieder!

My husband, Jim & I both grew up in the midwest- he by a lake & me on a farm. We are both artists and professors and work in Manhattan- this property made it possible for us to have it all.
The proximity to the cultural center of NYC with a State Park trail along the Hudson and a private deck and hot tub with magnificent river views- this is unique and very special. The addition of a ferry service to the Metro North makes country/city living a dream.
The majestic views of the Hudson and the sound of the water as you sleep at night and the chance to walk by the river made me fall in love- its all about the magic of the river and having a State Park trail along the river at the end of our block.
