Comfortable House Close To White Oak Canyon & Old Rag Trails
Old Rag Mountain Retreat is located one mile from the White Oak Canyon parking area and two miles from the lesser known parking area for the Old Rag circuit hike. This is a comfortable 3 Br/2ba house sitting on the foot of Old Rag at 1100 feet elevation.
Rest on one of the porches overlooking the mountains, spacious yard, and plentiful wildlife.
The house is charming and comfortable. We upstairs bedroom has a great balcony and jacuzzi tub. Itâs a little off the beaten path but great for a weekend away for some hiking.
The property was beautiful and the house was well equipped. The host was very communicative and we felt very welcome. This is an ideal location for hiking and activities!
The house was comfortable and felt remote and private yet close to many options to eat and activities. We loved it and our dog loved the yard. Would totally stay again if visiting Shenandoah again.
We loved our stay! Clean, comfortable, spacious, well-equipped, and close to great hiking. Upstairs owner's suite is fabulous. Comfy beds, nice porch. Highly recommend!
This was our second stay at Gary's house. Everything was perfect and this trip was even better than last year's. Great house, fire pit and grill - and easy proximity to White Oak Canyon and Old Rag. We'll be back next year!
We had a wonderful time staying in the cabin, It is well off the road and private with lots of nice outside space. Just a three minute drive from the White Oak Canyon trailhead. The kitchen is well-stocked with all you could need to cook your means and the living room well-furnished for comfy evenings around the fire.
We stayed here while visiting wineries and Shenandoah National Park with some friends. It was a great place to relax at the end of the day. Nice and remote.
The house was nice and quiet, perfect for our "old guys" get-away hiking trip to Old Rag and White Oak Canyon trails. The owner was super-helpful with recommendations and met all of our needs.
Had a wonderful stay. Spent loads of time around the fireplace, played loads of games and hiked Shenandoah. Loved the configuration of the house, the kitchen was well stocked with dishes, cookware, spices and aluminum foil which is rare for a rare but greatly appreciated!
The house is a perfect location for accessing Old Rag and White Oak Canyon trail. The kitchen has everything you need to prepare meals. The family room is cozy and the kitchen table is great for meals and games. If you are sensitive to mold, this is not the right house for you. The house was musty. Black flecks of mold(?) landed on our pillows each morning during the day after we made the bed. We left a day early because we felt unwell.
Truly enjoyed being out in nature. House is close to my favorite hikes and nice wineries! Beautiful views. Host offered nice supply of paper goods, linens and firewood. Host was also easy to contact with any questions.
Loved the home. Beautiful setting. Convenient and easy access to activities. Loved the store at Syria(Welcome to the farm). Best milk shakes. Great sandwiches and biscuits! Friendly and welcoming!
My wife and I were in need of some time away from our work. This property was perfect. A quiet retreat in the woods away from the Shenandoah National Park crowds. The house was cozy and warm. The wildlife was plentiful and active. We enjoyed walks around the property, hikes up the hill, and drives around the local area. We made it over to DuCard Vineyard for some music and wine which was great. We did head up to Skyland and Big Meadows, but the crowds at all the sights were too much. We did enjoy a nice drive through the park. We hope to make it back soon.
This home was the perfect distance from our friends' wedding venue. Although we initially had a minor issue getting into the home, once inside we were pleased to find it very clean and ready for our weekend stay. The driveway getting there is a bit narrow with branches (and as promised, narrow turn around space at the top of the hill), but the yard is open and inviting.
what a beautiful location and home. 5 of us and the pup stayed for a long weekend celebrating my oldest's 50th. the house is bright and open with amazing views from lots of big windows. very peaceful mountain side. the daffodils everywhere!!! house was clean, well stocked kitchen and baths. comfy beds. the rockers on the porch in three afternoon sun and the views from the dining room table at breakfast are breathtaking. deer in the yard. far enough out but close enough to great food and winery's. you can't get much closer to the park without staying in the park. Gary was easy to coordinate with and very responsive to questions. already planning our next visit because a long just wasn't enough!
I couldn't tell from the photos how close the house is to the road, and I was concerned that cars might make noise or runover the dog. The house is tucked back from the road on a rise over a small field, surrounded by trees on three sides. The road was not problem at all. You couldn't see it or hear it. The fire pit has nice Adirondack chairs around it.
We live full time in Florida, but we have been visiting Virginia at least yearly for over 45 years. So when this property became available 16 years ago, we fell in love with it and bought it. Since I retired in 2022, we have been to Virginia 6-7 times a year.
Because ORMR is so close to Shenandoah National Park, we see a lot of wildlife. Deer sightings are a daily things. We haven't seen bears since one destroyed our bird feeder. Turkey and foxes are pretty common sightings. Because of the elevation, it is usually five degrees cooler than in Madison, or even the bottom land of Syria.
I think we are most different from the rentals around us is the house size. Not counting the basement or porches, the house is about 2300 sq ft. The most positive comments we get are about the upstairs master bedroom and bath. My favorite room is the screen porch. Many comment on how quiet it is. Just resting on the porch with ice tea in hand is what I enjoy most.
