Great stay, lovely property

Charming little cabin! A few min from the Chama. So much fun! Off grid, but has everything you’d need for a simple stay. Will defiantly be returning!

Beautiful experiences in the canyon...

We urban greenhorns fell in love with Elizabeth, Andrew, David, Tristan, Grey, chickens (eggs!), calves, cows, horseys (from afar), river, cliffs, sky, sage, stars, outhouse (open concept!), hummers, and even the familiar ruts in the road (which we inspected often). We were honored to be invited to play bit parts in the annual roundup-- one of the best experiences of our entire six-week trip to the Southwest. Our hosts work so hard, while treating their animals so well-- really something to witness. We stayed in the spacious and comfortable Ranch Casita, and now think we want to try the Remote Casita on a future trip to Gallina Canyon. Thank you again, Elizabeth, Andrew, and David.

Spectacular views!

We stayed for our anniversary and found the casita to be a hidden gem. Words cannot describe the beauty and grandeur of the surroundings. The Casita is quite comfortable and the open-air lookout sleeping loft was fabulous for enjoying morning coffee or an evening glass of wine. Our hosts were very welcoming yet gave us complete privacy. There were delicious fresh eggs and heirloom tomatoes awaiting us in our kitchen. We hiked 4 miles to their remote casita and plan to rent that for our next anniversary. We simply loved everything about the place! Kathy and Steve

Isolated beauty and tranquility

Our stay was perfect. The beauty and solitude of the canyon was stunning. We rode and hiked for miles without seeing another sole (other than the hosts:-). The cabin had everything we needed and then some. It was clean, functional and very comfortable. We can't wait to go back.

You Won't Find a Better Desert Retreat

This was my third visit to the Wilderness Casita and I know I'll be back as soon as I'm able. It is one of the most beautiful places I've been--a place of great ever-changing beauty and sacred silence. Not having internet or phone access meant a kind of concentration nearly impossible in the outside world (an incredible gift for any artist or writer). But all this isolation is experienced in the supreme comfort of this well-appointed cabin. The owners, Elizabeth and Andrew, are incredible, welcoming people, happy to help you with anything you need. And David, the very capable ranch manager, is a fun and capable guide to the wonders of the canyon. If you're ready for some time truly to yourself, this is absolutely the place for you.

Amazing! Beautiful! Stunning canyon.

We loved staying at Gallina Canyon. We slept under the stars on the sleeping porch every night. Our two young sons loved it -- the stars, the night sky, the gentle sounds of nearby wildlife, the humming birds. The porch was plenty large enough for all four of us. We did wake early though, with the roosters and the sun rising over the canyon. Elizabeth was wonderful. Very welcoming and responsive, my only disappointment was that we didn't actually get to meet, which is a shame because she sounded like an amazing woman, with some great stories to tell having lived at this isolated ranch for decades. When I told her that my youngest would be spending his fifth birthday there she arranged to get a birthday cake! And a little present for both him and his brother. The casita is beautiful - much more so than the photos. It's a cute cottage that was originally built more than a century ago. It is rustic - there is an indoor composting toilet, but the outhouse was more appealing. There are solar lights, but you'll need flashlights. The fridge is propane. There is wifi, so you're not completely unplugged, but it's limited to email only. The kids also loved the swimming hole and splashing around in the Rio Chama. We hiked in the canyon. It was well worth the dusty drive from the nearest paved road. We'd love to go back some day.

Away from it all with style

What a wonderful stay! I loved the casita, it provided everything I needed and more. Truly a wonderful 'away from it all' stay. The cliffs are spectacular and when it rains, like during the monsoon season, you can spot and hear 2 wonderful waterfalls. That was an amazing site. This cabin also has a sleeping deck where I spent my time with coffee and books. Andrew, Elizabeth and David are amazing! I will be back again and again - I love the ranch!

Awesome place to recharge your batteries!

This casita is the ideal place to get away from it all! It is an off-the-grid yet extremely cozy and comfortable place where you are immersed in nature. Make sure to bring provisions with you because once you settle in, chances are you won't want to leave until it's time to go!

***** Off the Grid Experience *****

Spending 5 days in the Casita cabin was an unforgettable experience. The coziness. The night skies. The secluded canyon location was exactly what we wanted. We were blessed with cool days and nights; clear skies and beautiful weather. The cabin was everything we expected, but the ranch was so much more. Hiking immediately behind the cabin in the national forest ~ hiking in the creek that flows into the Rio Chama ~ hiking up the cliffs with Tristan & Sushi (their 2 dogs) was the best hike ever. Elizabeth, Andrew and David's hospitality and graciousness was more than we could ask for. The cabin was well appointed and clean. Bedding soft and comfy. The love of their life on the ranch was evident in everything we experienced. We hated to leave, but knew we would be back in the springtime to experience the Wilderness Casita, located 4 miles further into the ranch. David took us to the cabin and we knew it would be the right place for our next visit. Unplugged. Off the grid. Solitude and God's country. Thank you so much for sharing your little part of Heaven on Earth.

Spectacular spot

We stayed for two nights, one of which was spent on the sleeping porch, and absolutely loved this spot. The views of the canyon are stunning, and the fall colors were breathtaking. David was incredibly generous with the late season harvest from the garden - we couldn't eat it all! The dogs were our buddies and everything about the place was cozy and comfortable.

Amazing Trip

I really enjoyed my week-long stay, I was looking for a place where I could get some time to myself in the outdoors to hike/paint/chill. There are so many places to explore with endless possibilities. Incredible beauty, solitude, and quiet - just the sounds of nature - wind, birds, river. The color/shadows/appearance of everything changes so much with the passing of time/clouds. At night, when there are no clouds the stars are wonderful - you can really see them SO well and the twinkling is obvious, something I really need to squint to see in most places. I can't remember the last time I could make out the Milky Way! I was there when some storms came in during the day and they were a beautiful sight. Just be aware the roads can become impassable if enough rain falls! The casita was so nice to come back to at night. It had everything I needed - good sized fridge, stove top, and a very comfortable bed/pillows. I used the sleeping deck to hang out and also to take a few siestas in between hikes. I needed it especially the first two days when I was acclimating to the altitude. The hosts are super nice and were kind enough to share some of their harvest - lots of fresh vegetables, fruit, and eggs. All very delicious. I hope to come back again! Maybe I'll bring my family. Maybe. :) Thank you to Elizabeth, Andrew and David!

Beautiful place, so peaceful, very comfortable Casita!!

The drive to the Casita was kind of exciting, yes little bit rough. It kept us in suspense to see what we would see/find at end of road to the Ranch. What we found was just breathtaking. Beautiful, peaceful, everything we were actually wanting to experience. David was such a great help, sharing lots about the Ranch, and our stay at the Casita. We felt very welcomed. Elizabeth had for us in refrigerator fresh crisp lettuce of different kinds from the garden, a very nice chilled bottle of Champagne which we were celebrating a month early our 35th Anniversary, and the most golden fresh dozen eggs from their chickens, which we enjoyed for breakfast. The Casita was so cozy, clean, and everything you needed was available. We were free to explore and wonder about the Ranch. We had the most relaxing, peaceful time at the Wilderness Ranch Casita. We will most definitely be back. Thank you so much for opening up your Ranch to us, Elizabeth, Andrew, and David. Thank you, The Ulibarri's

Magnificent!

GALLINA CANYON RANCH Just to get there is a beautiful adventure. The dirt road slows you down, but it also enables you to admire the colorful high desert country with its scenery that changes every few minutes. The casita is spacious and comfortable, with a well-equipped kitchen, fantastic views of the cliffs from the dining table, and a deck that lets you relax and read in perfect quietness. From this same deck we saw the most perfect starry sky at night, something we didn’t remember even existed. During the day, the birdsongs were lovely in the quiet surroundings. The hummingbirds came to visit regularly. Andrew and David were very helpful but not intrusive. Andrew brought over some of the most delicious fresh eggs we have ever had! The chickens are truly free-range and lay their eggs wherever they please, so Andrew has to go looking for them. We enjoyed some time on the “sleeping deck,” but only during the daytime, to read and to admire the cliffs across the river. The different perspective from the sleeping deck presents a wide panorama of changing rock colors. One time we hiked the road that runs through the ranch and got as far as the Anasazi cabin. Unfortunately, we couldn’t get onto the property (probably our own lack of inventiveness), but we enjoyed the views. On this hike, we were accompanied by the three ranch dogs; they made sure we were safe. We also liked the “beach” on the Chama River. We hiked from there in the direction of the Monastery, which we could see from a distance. We stayed a total of 4 nights and wished we had booked for a longer stay.

Perfect hideaway in Gallina Canyon

When we saw the picture of "La Casita" we know that was the place for us. We wanted to unplug, relax, walk, hike and learn more about this beautiful region. We stayed there for four days - the main attraction was the beauty of the canyon. The cabin itself was wonderfully set up to cook, read, watch for birds, play scrabble, and walk some more. One day it rained all day, and we just loved being able to read all day. If you need a gorgeous place off the grid, this is it.

We plan on spending more time in that magical spot

Wow. We can not recommend a stay at Gallina Canyon Ranch enough. If you're dreaming of a peaceful retreat in which you can just simply soak up the beauty of the Earth, then this is your place. My husband and I stayed at the Wilderness Ranch Casita for two nights and found it to be a comfortable refuge after a long day of hiking the property. We ate our meals on the porch-with-a-view and chuckled at the begging kitties. The kitchen was fully-stocked with everything we could need. Fabulous tasting water and no problems with the hot water in the shower. The composting toilet will surely be a new experience to most but we both agreed that it was easy and amazingly 100% odor-free. My favorite part of the home was the beautiful artwork and great library to peruse. Oh and the sleeping deck! Sadly, we were too tired at night to even make our way up there but SO did enjoy having our morning coffee there amongst the hundreds of curious hummingbirds. When we return (& we will be returning), we plan on spending more time in that magical spot. We hiked into the Anasazi cabin and rested there a bit in its cool hammock. We thought it would be a great place to stay.... more like glamping than the casita. The outdoor shower there is ridiculously cool with its unbelievable views. And a fun swimming spot is right at that site, as well. We continued on hiking and made it all the way to the Remote Cabin 4 miles in, crossing the Gallina riverbed 13 times. But before reaching that, we found flags that led off-trail to fascinating petroglyphs carved into the canyon wall. To see them up close & personal, and to feel like we'd discovered them ourselves was one of my favorite memories from that day. The Remote Cabin looks like something out of a movie. Truly remote & would be a wonderful place to completely relax, rest, and ponder life for a while. I want to mention the drive into the ranch. It indeed took us over an hour to travel the 15-16 miles back. While absolutely breathtaking and an adventure indeed, it can be sketchy (narrow, rocky or rutted) in places. We were certainly thankful that the road was nice & dry for us. I do know that David / Andrew will come pick you up if the conditions for driving are too dangerous for the type of car you're driving. We were in a small convertible and besides some awful-sounding times when rocks would bash against the underside, the drive was fine. Also, bring all the groceries you'll need because I promise you will not want to drive out

So Happy to have found this place

Just got back from a wonderful weekend at the casita and we four happy travelers found the place unique and beautiful, opportunities for hiking and views excellent, the accommodations clean, comfortable and thoughtfully provisioned including a useful kitchen and beautiful deck for grilling. David gave us a good overview when we arrived. We found the fridge stocked with fresh eggs and beautiful lettuces and squash, Andrew brought us even more fresh produce from the garden and gave directions to some petroglyphs and the "beach" along the Chama River the next morning. We enjoyed the sleeping porch and exploring the area as well as the opportunity to chat with Andrew and Elizabeth about their work and the ranch. Clearly a labor of love and we felt honored to get to visit. Thank you Elizabeth, Andrew and David! We hope to be back!

I can't wait to return!

I can't rave enough about this beautiful place! It felt like home immediately and I'm definitely homesick already! Andrew met us with a delightful ball of gamboling puppies and showed us all 'round the ins and outs of the Casita. They'd already put fresh eggs from their chickens (hands down the most golden yolks I've ever seen - and I have friends who raise chickens in Austin), as well as fresh picked squash. Andrew asked us if we liked salads and when we said yes, he showed up a little later with 2 heads of red and 2 heads of romaine from their garden. What a treat and we felt so spoiled! The casita is an old adobe that's been added on to which runs on solar power, with a composting toilet. The water is sweet and delicious, from their spring - a real treat since the last time I had "real" water was when my parents had land in the foothills of Colorado in the 70s/80s. The house is sweet, cozy, and comfy, and fabulous for those who deeply appreciate rustic charm. The views from the casita's deck and the sleeping deck offered a never-ending light show as the sun moved across the sky. Could've stayed there forever watching! At night, it's absolute quiet and absolutely dark, just the way I like it - and rarely experienced. During the day, you hear the happy, bustling sounds of the farm below you. We regret that neither we or Elizabeth and Andrew had the time to connect and trade stories. Next time! We took our time (about an hour) driving in the 16 or so miles from Highway 84 because recent torrential rains have left the roads a bit ragged. But that was not a bad thing: it gave us time to thoroughly soak in the Chama Canyon Wilderness on the way. Make certain you've stocked up on any supplies you need: there's no "corner store" to pop over to! :-) All I can think about is that I can't wait to return for a much longer period next time. I'd love to try out their remote retreat as well.

Second Visit was SPECTACULAR!

This was our second visit to the remote casita. We came in for our tenth anniversary, and returned this year for our 13th. This year was amazing, because NM had a record breaking year for rain. Everything was lush and green, and the Gallina river was running high. We found a bottle of wine and a bottle of champagne waiting for us int he frig, and Elizabeth gave us garden produce and farm fresh eggs to supplement our steaks. We hiked, napped on the porch beds, saw a glorious sunset, painted and drew, found some petroglyphs on the canyon walls not far from the casita. The seclusion and the bird song, the soft breeze and the smell of fresh sage were restorative and romantic. Our two border collies were in heaven, too. Thanks so much, Elizabeth, Andrew and Dave, for offering this spot on the planet for people to experience.

Retreat of a Lifetime

A gigantic smile comes to my face when I think of our time at the Casita. Everything about it was perfect, even the composting toilet. The house felt just like home away from home-- cozy, well-stocked, with delightful surprises here and there: a variety of toiletries for every need, good books on the shelves, gorgeous original paintings on the walls… even a bottle of wine waiting for us in the fridge along with trays of ice ready to go in the freezer. We experienced what some might consider the simple pleasures of life, which, it turns out, are the grandest: being wakened by an inquisitive hummingbird buzzing my face; watching a spectacular lightning storm from the open air sleeping loft, coming upon abandoned antlers on the hills around the valley; scrambling and exploring, surprised by an afternoon hailstorm; the pleasure of just sitting on the deck swing, enjoying spectacular views and the constant whirr of hummingbirds. A big thank you to Elizabeth and Andrew, our hosts. I forgot a library book at the casita, which she sent to me in the mail right away. That is no small feat, considering the post office is quite a ways away! If you are looking for something remote, a bit adventurous, and memorable in every good way, this is a wonderful place to visit.

The journey there is half the fun

The drive to the ranch is breathtakingly beautiful, and you arrive to a true haven of serene beauty. If I sound as though I am waxing a little too rhapsodic, I assure you I am not! Although the casita is off-grid, you have everything you could ask for. This is more than "glamping", but still rustic. I slept wonderfully in the bed, and enjoyed cooking in the kitchen. The sleeping deck... this is something I have always dreamed of - to be able to sleep comfortably and safely in the fresh clean open air, with a dramatic view on all sides. A wonderful wonderful getaway.

Wow!

It was the scenery that blew us away, talk about amazing. It was a mini Grand Canyon all to ourselves. The Casita had everything to make us comfortable. A house with everything needed, yet off the grid. It was the quietest place we had ever been. The road winding its way through the working cattle ranch as it ascended into the red walls of the canyon was really half the adventure. There were hundreds of hummingbirds nearby to watch. The river meanders through the middle of the property just a short walk away. The hiking was filled with discoveries like old Indian cliff sites. Elizabeth, Andrew and David were very welcoming, always available and helpful. This was by far the quietest, most relaxing vacation we ever had. We only wished we had stayed longer. Royce and Loriana

10/10 Excellent

Excellent Stay

I live here locally and recommended that my parents stay at the casita while they visited me from out of town. We were all thoroughly impressed by the accommodations, hospitality, and the gorgeous setting. Elizabeth, Andrew, and David went out of their way to make all of us feel comfortable and welcome. This is a very versatile option for lodging, as it offers a high level of comfort and convenience in a remote, wilderness setting. Opportunities for hiking are indeed limitless, as the website promises. Our 2 night stay flew by, I highly recommend that you stay as long as possible to be able to appreciate the setting fully. This will definitely be the only option I will consider from now on when receiving visitors from out of town.
