We are always sad when a guest doesn’t enjoy the St. John experience. But there is no denying that this little piece of paradise is not like most tourist destinations, and not for everybody. Since we are almost ¾ National Park, the island is rural in nature, “in nature” being the operative words. We have all sorts of critters who visit homes, including thrushee birds who will fly right through an open door or window and eat whatever is available! It’s been widely publicized that the Virgin Islands is experiencing a severe draught, with virtually no rain for the past five months. The normally green hillsides are all brown. Blogs, websites, local news outlets are all talking about the devastating lack of water. These guests were unfortunately visited by sugar ants, tiny critters, desperately looking for something to drink. The guests were inadvertently kind enough to keep providing water in the sink and on the counters for these little guys, who kept coming back for more! All of the St. John Properties villas are on monthly extermination schedules with a professional company. So our villas never have “infestations” (which means the bugs live there, and aren’t just passing through). The guests arrived Thursday afternoon and didn't call the office or rental manager. They finally called my cell phone Friday evening around six. I sympathized and explained that the bugs they described were sugar ants, tiny and harmless, and obviously in search of water. We dispatched our maintenance man first thing Saturday morning, and as is often the case with these critters, there were none to be found when he arrived at the house. So we asked him to place Terro ant liquid dispensers by the kitchen sinks and in both bathrooms . They called again Saturday around seven pm saying there were ants, and at that time I offered to move them to another house. They chose to wait until the next morning, when I met them and took them to another lovely villa. (it had sugar ants, too) I hope that everyone who rents a villa understands that these are not hotels, but are peoples’ homes and do have their peculiarities. We hope these folks enjoyed St. John, and are sorry they didn’t stay at Swogjan’s long enough to experience the fabulous180 degree views, wonderful breezes, hot tub and pool as well as everything else the house has offered to so many other satisfied guests for their pleasure.
