We had a wonderful stay on Dakin St. while visiting family in the Halifax area. The location is perfect, easy access to main roads and close to the harbour. I have family in Dartmouth, Tantallon and Truro, so this was perfectly located. The place itself was lovely. Four large beds with very comfortable linens, clean bathroom and shower, lovely kitchen and wooded view out front. We saw a mother deer and baby several times! The livingroom was a bit small, but adequate and comfortable. Host Holly was very quick to respond and easy to communicate with. All in all, an excellent place to stay and we will definitely consider it again.
As others have said, the host Holly was amazing. After a terrible experience with Vrbo (they double booked another house on us and the other host only realized 2 days before we were set to arrive with our 3 young children for a family wedding on the other side of the country, so it got cancelled and then I spent hours on the phone and had to call 10+ times before Vrbo agreed to this as an alternative- 2 days after we had already arrived!), this was the only option for us so we were thankful it was available. As others have said the air conditioner/temperature situation is not good- one portable A/C in the hall and one in a bedroom meant that the other bedrooms were warm and we had to keep all the doors open through the night for airflow (not to mention the noise from the machines). The beds are also ridiculously high as others note, so I got very little sleep worrying that my kids would fall out and hurt themselves. There also is a very small dining table with only living room (high back) chairs, so eating was awkward for our family of 5. It was fairly clean, but had a musty smell and spider webs, etc. in the corners, so obviously has not been deep cleaned or used a lot. The back deck was completely overgrown and covered in moss, so not really usable. And the driveway is tight! I'm sure you could squeeze in two vehicles, but it would be tricky! All in all, we were thankful for a place to stay and glad that Vrbo covered the extra cost (although who knows how long it will take to get reimbursed), but I definitely would not have paid what this is listed for based on what you get.
Holly is quick to respond to questions and is very nice. The neighborhood feels quite safe and is a 10-15 drive into downtown. The house is very clean, the beds are extremely comfortable and the linens are high quality.
This property is as it looks in the pictures, however the spaces feel smaller than Iâd expected. For it being advertised as sleeping up to10, there isnât nearly the space to accommodate that many people in the common areas (which consist of a kitchen and a shared dining/living room). Our family of six felt like the space was cramped.
The kitchen can hold a maximum of two people cooking and there is space to sit at the small island for two others. The dining room / living room has maximum seating for six, but two of the chairs are dining room chairs.
My family of six had hoped to share meals together while renting this house, but there was not seating to accommodate us around a shared table. The island in the kitchen has seating for two, as does the small table in the shared dining room / living room. So a total of four people can sit at a table and eat, but not in the same room.
Offering unwanted advice here, but I would turn the front bedroom into a rec room (and put in a comfortable sleeper sofa instead of a futon) and make the dining room into a space that can comfortably feed the number of people who are staying at the house.
There also needs to be an efficient plan in place for when AC units fail. Since they are portable units (not central AC), they function moderately well at best, so having readily available and fully functional back-ups that can be delivered and installed quickly is important.
So, overall a mixed bag. Holly was really nice and did respond to our persistent AC issues promptly.
We had to do 14 day quarantine and then our visit so this location worked well. There is a lot of decorative items, so sometimes finding a place to put my stuff was a bit challenging. But, overall it fit our needs.
The only thing I can say about the place that was not right for us is: some of the beds was so high that you needed a step later to get in bed. The left front stove element stayed on even after you turned of the stove. we turned off the stove barker to prevent any damage from stove. The couch bed in the living room needs to be replaced because none of us could sleep on it.
Nestled in Rockingham and close to everything, itâs a great place to stay with everything you need. Quiet , comfortable and beautifully furnished it made our visit a welcome refuge after long days at the hospital. The beds are very comfortable which is high on my list.
It can use some sprucing up and a new sofa but nonetheless weâll be back again. Oh and Holly was excellent to deal with.
This house was perfect for our group of brothers and sisters on vacation. A fabulous bedroom for everyone, a wonderfully stocked kitchen to prepare our last meal on vacation. The decor and furnishings are everything the pictures and description claimed. Would very much recommend and stay again.
